My invention relates to the lining and hinge reenforcement of cigar boxes. j

The main purpose of my invention is Vto simplify and cheapen the lining and hinge reenforcing Operations in a cigar box.. 'I accomplish this by using a stronger lining paper than usual and extending the lining paper to cover the inner face of the hinge and serve the additional purpose of hinge reenforcernent. Y

A further purpose is to facilitate machineplacing of box hinge reenforcements. In the drawings -I have shown aform of my invention which is inexpensive and thoroughly practicable and which at the saine time well illustrates the principles of my invention. 4

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigar box having my lining and hingereenforcement in position. I have omitted the normal inside label covering theV inner face of the lid and extending slightly down into the box. Y

The showing of the cigar box in the illustration is intended to be a conventional one showing the usual front 6, back 7, sides 8,

bottom 9 and lid 10. As usual, at the front and back the edges are droppedat 11 and 12 as compared with the edges 13 of the sides in order to provide place for theV lid.

The customary fabric hinge 14 is shown as attached to the upper edgeV ofthe back of the box and to the top and rear edge of the In the past it has been customary to use in addition an inside hinge reenforcement, glued to the upper inside surface of the back 7 down to somesuch point asl, and glued at its upper edge over the upper rear drop edge `12 of the box and over rthe inner rear face16 of the lid. This reenforcement has. preventedbreaking down of the lid of the box in the position shownV in Figures 2, 3 and l and'has more particularly made it possible Vto safely handle a box by the lid, even when the box is full of cigars. l l In this prior practicethe paper used for hinge reenforoement was very much stronger and thicker than Ythe paper used for the lining andthe paper of the lining overlapped the hinge-reenforcing str-ip. Thismeant a double thickness ofp'aper fors-part ofthe upper inside face of the back and` required two operations for'the vplacing of the lining and hinge reenforcement respectively.

. I have found that th lining and hinge reenforcement can be applied either by hand Aor by machine very much more cheaply-and conveniently by a single operation than by two operations and that it is not necessary to use for the purpose a paperas thiclrand strong as that now ordinarily used for `hinge reenforcement. They can be made ina single piece only slightlv stronger than the paper now used for the lining. V- f A single piece lining 17 is shown in Figure 1 and a part 17 ofatwo-piece lining 17 is shown in Figure 4. Whichever form is used Vthis lining glued to the back of the box is extended-at 18 so as to be glued to the rear drop edge 12 and-to the rear inner face of the lid at16 to offer the reenforcement.

Except for the extension 18and the st onger paper. the lining can be of any of the types previously used. I have shown conventional forms having the flaps 19 of suitable size and shape to it the inside faces of the front and back of the box, and the central portions 2O.l 20 adapted to cover all or a part of the bottom of the lbox and the end portions 21, if
