Description

UITED CHARLES G. MORTIMER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-SAFES.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No.1 85,123, dated December 5, 1876; application filed November 14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHAs. G. MORTIMER, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safe; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accon'lpanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a match-box or match-safe, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to de scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my matchsafe. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
' A A represent the side pieces of my matchsat'e, struck up from strips of sheet metal, with transverse corrugations a extending nearly the entire surface, and leaving a plain beveled edge, b, all around the same.
The body of the box is formed of a sheet metal plate, B, soldered to the edges of the side pieces A A. This body B extends from a point, (1, at the front down to and around the lower ends of the side pieces, and up the back to a point, e, a suitable distance below the upper ends of said side pieces.
To the back of the body B, at the point e, is hinged a lid, (3, which closes over the top of the box, and overlaps the upper edge of the front of the body, as shown in Fig. 2. In the front end of the lid 0 is a pin, 71, which enters a hole, a, in the body to hold the lid down closed.
Around the pin of the hinge is placed a spiral spring, .9, to throw the lid open when the front of the body B is pressed inward, so as to release the pin ifrom'the hole ac. This spring also, by acting upon the lid, makes the pin 2' bind in the slot or hole as, so as to hold the lid closed unless the front of the body is pressed inward. Within the box thus constructed, on the back, is attached a loop, D, in which is inserted a piece of cloth or other cushion, h, for pins and needles, the box thus forming a pin-cushion as well as a matchsafe.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The within -described match-safe, consisting of the corrugated side pieces A A,
body B, and the lid 0, hinged at the back and.
closing over the top to the front, with the spring s, pin z, and the hole a: in the body, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. 1
2. The match-safe A B 0, having the loop D and cushion h, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of November, 1876.
CHARLES G. MORTIMER.
