FARM-FENCE. N.184,9z4. Pmnned Nov. zs,""18'7 6.
WITNEEEE: INVENTm:
UNITEDv STATES PATENT OFFICE JoHN L. SULLIVAN, oF DALLAs, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-FENCES.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent N o. ISLL924, dated November 28, 1876; application led September 22, 1876,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. SULLIVAN, of Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specitication.
The nature ot' my invention relates to farmfences; and it consists i`n a triangular, quad rangular, square, or rectangular support for fences, made by a combination of stakes, three or four, arranged in such a manner that their Alower ends may describe a triangle, rectangle&c., as placed in contact with the ground, their upper ends coming together or crossing each other near the top of the felice, or at any point or points between the top and bottom, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawing, which fully illus- -trates my invention, A 'A represent three `or four stakes of suitable dimensions, set in or on the ground, -so as to describe a triangle or rectangle at the bottom, and their upper ends leaning' toward each other, and coming together at any desired point or points. At such points the stakes may be fastened together by means of Wire, pins, nails, notches,
or other suitable means, and they may be connected in couples or otherwise. In some cases the stakes may not come together, but connect indirectly, counterbalancing and support ing each other. The panels or body ot' the fence between the bases or stakes thus arranged may be made of any desired form and material.
For a rail fence the stakes may occupy a triangular form, two of them in one corner or angle of said triangle,- connected together by wires or other suitable means, and the rails B laid between them supporting each other alternately in adjoining panels, the top rail B resting in the crotches.
Having. thus described my invention, I claim- A fence post or support formed of three or more stakes, arranged to form a triangle at their lower ends, and coming together or crossing each other near the top, or at some point or points between the top and bottom, in combination with the rail-panels B, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of J une, 1876.
J N O. L. SULLIVAN.
