FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,499, dated February 16, 1886. Application filed August 13, 1885 Serial No. 174,341. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. TILLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grape Vine, in the county of Tat-rant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I dov hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to fences, the object being to provide a fence which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, one that may be readily and easily constructed, and which shallbe strong and durable.

\Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and coinbinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a fence embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is an elevation from the opposite side to that at which Fig. 1 is taken. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section on the line a; a; of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 9 y of Fig. 2.

Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.

Referring to the drawings, A A A repre sent the posts, on one side of which, near their upper ends, are provided recesses a, in which recesses a wire, preferably barbed. is adapted to be seated, said wire extending through the recesses and connecting the several pos ts together. The ends of the wire I) are secured to the end posts preferably by staples c, and for holding said wires in the recesses in the front sides ofthc posts I employ hooked pins or bolts (1.

B B represent two series of rails, one of which, E, is located between the posts A A, and the other series, B, between the posts A and A The outer ends of the series of rails B are securely held in place by means of a fastening device, which consists of a single piece of wire which is looped or doubled, and passing through said looped or doubled end is a barbed wire, a, which is secured to the posts A A A near the lower ends thereof, staples of being employed as securing means. The ends of this wire are lapped between each of the rails, so that a supporting-loop is provided for the rails, which serves to hold the rails in their proper relative positions. The free ends of the wire of the fastening device are twisted, as shown, and said twisted end is secured in a notch or recess, e, on the front side of post A. The rails B are secured in a similar manner at their outer ends to the post A.

F represents a wire tie which is composed of a single piece of wire which is doubled. This wire tie F rests at its upper end in a slot, f, in the posts A, and from there extends downwardly on each side, and is twisted to prevent vertical play of the top slats. The doubled wire extends between the ends of the rails on each side of the post, and is twisted or turned between each rail, to afford a support for the same. The ends of the wire tie or loop are connected at their lower ends to the wire a, which extends from post to post.

The above-described fence is simple in its construction, may be manufactured and supplied at a slight cost, and is strong and durable.

Havingthus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the posts and slats, of the wires secured directly to the posts and twisted between the outer ends of the rails, and the wire tie secured to the central post and extending downwardly therefrom on each side and twisted between the rails at their inner ends, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the post A, of a wire tie consisting of a single piece of wire doubled and secured to said post, and extending downwardly therefrom on each side thereof, and the rails, said wire being twisted between the rails and twisted between its point of attachment to the post and the top rails, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the posts A A 5 A and the wire connecting them near their lower ends, of the slats and rails, and the wire tie secured to the'post A, and extending downwardly therefrom on each side thereof, said tie being twisted between its point of attachment to the post and the top rails and twisted between the series of rails and secured to the bottom wire, substantially as set forth.
