Description
March 8, 1932. D. M. .1. CONWAY FOUNTAIN PEN Filed Oct. 27, 1930 Patented Mar. 8, 1932 PATENT OFFICE DONALD MICHAEL JOSEPH CONWAY, OF JASPER, ALBERTA, CANADA FOUNTAIN PEN Application filed October 27, 1930, Serial No. 491,359%, and in Canada November 26, 1929.
My invention relates to improvements in fountain penspens to produce uniformity of line, to eliminate manual support of the pen and pen-point on the paper, to insure freedom of movement by a ball-bearing race, to get away from cramping and broadly, to furnish a pen more in harmony with freedom of movement.
Fig. 1 shows a section of the improved pen.
Fig. 2 shows a plan of the bottom with the ball-race in place.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the top.
Fig. 4 is a plan of the rubber ink-container with neck for attachment to the nib-tube.
Fig. 5 is a plan of the plate for expelling air from the ink-container.
Referring to the drawings:
(1) represents a screwed-in cap to protect the collapsible thumb press (2) in plate (8) which is held in place by three spiral springs (8). The spiral springs (3) are set at rightangles to the plate (8). Pressure on (2) brings the plate down on the rubber bag (6) thereby expelling the air. On slow release, the ink is drawn in through the nib-tube (11) No. (10) is a flat piece of metal set to facilitate the screwing up of section (9) into section (5). The pen-point (12) is adjusted on a level with the contact surface of the ball- 39 race when in action. The ball-race (4) projects beyond the bottom of the pen.
' The pen is assembled as follows:
Plate (8) is put into position, the nib-tube is screwed into place, the ink-container is adjusted and sealed. Then section (9), containing the ball-bearing race, is screwed into position. It supports the ink-container.
In operation of the pen, the writer has to 4 consider only the form of the writing as support of the nib and intensity of line are provided for. The pen may be held in many ways. Any two fingers are sufficient to guide it. If desired it may be operated with the whole hand completely off the plane of the paper; the pen itself carrying all the Weight.
I am aware that, prior to my invention,
fountain pens have been made and used; I
therefore do not claim such a combination 5 broadly, but what I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A writing device comprising a casing having a closed top and a cylindrical side-wall, a fountain-pen nib-tube threaded into said wall, having a nib secured thereto and inclined downwardly therefrom, a rubber bag within said casing attached to said nib-tube, a pressure plate resiliently suspended from said top above said rubber bag, a threaded opening in said top above said plate, a removable cap threaded into said opening, a member screw-threaded into the bottom of said casing wall provided with ball-bearings in the lower surface thereof and having an inclined upper surface to support said rubher bag.
Town of Jasper, October 13th, 1930.
