UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ROBERT'L. BOYD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COVER AND ADJUSTABLE INK-WELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,132, dated July 19, 1892.
Application filed March 23, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. BOYD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Covers and Adjustable Ink- WVells for Inkstands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined cover and adjustable ink-well for use with any opentop inkstand, and has for its object the provision of a device simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and efficient in practical use.
To attain the desired end my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts first fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section; Fig. 3, a a plan view of the same.
Like letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
Referring again to the drawings, A represents myink-Well, constructed of anyapproved material, as of glass, but preferably of a nonbrittle light material, as rubber, fiber, &c., and consisting of a tube A, the lower portion of which A, forming the ink-well proper, is narrowed and made of conical or other suitable form and provided at its extremity with an opening a', conducting into the interior receptacle a of my ink-well.
The exterior of the tubular portion of my ink-well is screw-threaded and adapted to engage an interiorly-threaded opening of an independent disk B, which serves as a cover to afford means for protecting the top of an inkstand O and also as a support for my inkwell A. By means of the said screw-thread $erial No. 426,039. (No model.)
the relation of the said ink-well A and cover B may be adjusted so that the ink-wellAwill depend any desired distance into the ink-reservoir O. In order to facilitate the adj ustment of the parts, the upper edge of the tube A is preferably provided with an annular flange A the periphery of which may be milled.
In practical operation the cover B is placed loosely over the top of the ink-reservoir C, and upon grasping the said cover B with one hand and manipulating the flange A with the other the thereunder-located ink-well A may be caused to descend into the ink, which, entering the same through the opening a, will rise to the height of that in the ink-reservoir.
It is evident that many slight changes in the construction and relative arrangement and operation of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of an inkstand with a cover loosely placed upon the top of the same and removable at will and provided with an orifice and with a therein-contained vertically-adjustable ink-well provided with an opening constructed and arranged to communicate with the reservoir of the inkstand, whereby by grasping the said cover with one hand and manipulating the ink-well with the other the said ink-well may be caused to descend into the inkstand-reservoir.
In testimony of the foregoing specification I do hereby sign the same, in the city, county, and State of New York, this 17th day of March, A. D. 1892.
I ROBERT L. BOYD. Witnesses:
WM. M. V. FOWLER, J. ODELL FOWLER, Jr.
