CONTAINER.
Application filed Mayf18, 1928, Serial No. 278,727. 13.e newed .Tune 22, 1931.
My invention relates to improvements in containers, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed. 1
L; An object of my invention is to provide a container which may be used for various purposes, but which is especially adapted to receive ashes drawn from a furnace, and to conceal the ashes in such a manner that the escapement of the ash dust, if any, will be directed back into the furnace.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which has novel means for retaining the ashes or con- .1 tents so that they cannot readily move therefrom and so that the device may be filled to a greater degree.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which may be suspended from a wall or stood-upon a support and be usedas a waste container.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel 1 features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of my device as applied to the ashdoor of a heater, and
Figure 3 is a modified form of my device.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a body portion 1 having a front wall 2, side walls 3 and 4, and a rear or back wall 5. The walls 2 to 5, inclusive, are connected at one end by means of a fiat bottom portion 6.
The front wall 2 is shorter in length than the rear wall 5. The edges of the side walls adjacent the front wall 2 extend a short distance or to points indicated at? from the front wall. The side walls 3 and 4 have their ends tapering from the point 7 to the edge of the back wall 5.
Retaining members 8 extend inwardly from the back wall 5 for a purpose hereinafter described. The retaining members 8 extend transversely from the points 9 adjacent thee'nds' of the side walls 13 and 4 to" points a short distance from the center. of the top edge of the backwall 5. I
'A handle 9 is provided for thebody portion 1 and-is pivotally mounted at 10 to the side-walls 3 and 4.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof maybe readily understood. The body portion; 1 may be disposed in a substantially horizontal position whereby the back wall 5. will rest upon the base 11 of a furnace or heater and extend slightly into the opening 12 for the ash door.. The open end of the body, portion 1 will therefore be in substantial alignment with the door opening 12, and the closed end, that end at the bottom portion 6, will rest upon the floor. While in this position the user may readily draw the ashes from the heater and into the body portion.
The ashes from the heater may be drawn into the body portion where they will pass to the bottom thereof and gradually fill the body portion. The retaining members 8 and the extensions of the side walls 3 and 4 aid the operator in filling the body portion 1 to its greatest capacity.
The body portion 1 may then be lifted to its vertical position, where it will rest upon the bottom 6 and then conveyed to any desired location by the aid of the handle 9 and emptied. The retaining members 8 and the extensions of the side walls 3 and 4 also enable the container to be moved back into engagement with the opening 12 of the heater after it has been partially filled without spilling any of the contents thereof.
In Figure 3 I have shown a modified form of my device and identical in construction to'the form shown in Figures 1 and 2 with the exception of a curved-over portion 13 which is integral with the back wall 5 and which is adapted to receive the lower edge of the opening 12 of the heater so as to firmly hold the body portion against displacement while the ashes are being drawn from the heater. Furthermore, the extensions of the side walls 3 and 4 may be bent inwardly so as to providereinforcing strips as indicated at 14.
I claim: c
1. A device of the type described comprising a body portion having a front Wall, a
'back Wall, side walls, and a flat bottom portion connecting said walls, said front wall being shorter. in length than said back wall, an end of each side wall being tapered from the edge of the back Wall, and retaining strips secured to the side walls and the backwall,
said retaining strips being spaced apart from one another to provide an opening therebei 2. A device of the type described comprising'a body portion having a front Wall, a back wall, side walls, and a fiatvbottom POI? tion connecting said walls, said. front wall being shorterin lengthithan said back wall, an end of each side wall being tapered from the edge. of the back wall, retaining strips secured to the side walls and'the back wall, said retaining strips being spaced apart from one another to providean opening therebetween, and an integral hooklike extension carried by said back wall and extending substantially the Width of said opening.
Signed at Macomb, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, this 14th day of May, A. D. 1928.
