Patented Mar. 1, 1932 Urrs sr 'rss PATENT- OFFICE WILLIALE A. BESSMER, F PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HAMMERMILL PAPER 00., OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN SYLVANIA i PULP BEATER Aplication filed. September 20, 1930; Serial 116483365.
This invention relates to paper manufacture and more particularly to beating engines for acting upon-the pulp preliminarily to the passage of the latter to a paper ma- Pulp beaters or beating engines commonly comprise a beater roll on a shaft which is supported at its ends on members, termed lighter bars, mounted on suitable frame work. The pulp is passed between the beater roll and a bed plate.
When a thick lap of pulp passes between the bed plate and the beater roll the roll is raised, carrying its shaft out of the hearings on the lighter bars; and, upon the departure of the thick lap from beneath the roll the shaft of the roll drops down upon said bearings, subjecting the lighter bars to sudden jars and occasionally causing the latter to break. My invention provides simple and efficient means for relieving the lighter bars of shocks and for effectively cushioning the movements of said bars. A further feature of the invention resides in provision for positive adjustment of the positions of the lighter Other features of the invention will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in horizontal section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a. vertical transverse sectional View on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, a conventional beater roll is indicated diagrammatically at 5 and the associated bed plate at 6. As is customary, the beater roll is carried by and rotates with a shaft 7, which is journaled at opposite ends in hearings on the respective lighter bars. In the drawings I have shown means associated with but one end of the beater roll shaft 7 for supporting the latter but it will be understood that similar supporting means is provided for the opposite end of said shaft, and since the supporting means at the respective ends of the shaft may be duplicates a disclosure of one thereof is sulficient for an understanding of my invention.
The lighter bar 8, as shown, carries a hearing member 9 for the reception of the shaft is provided with a Also, the end portion of 7. Said lighter bar is pivotally mounted at one end onthe'supporting frame 11. A convenient means for this purpose comprises a trunnion 12 on said bar which trunnion is received in pocket 13 on said frame. The 0pposite end of said lighter bar is provided with an opening 14 through which there extends a vertical adjusting rod 15, having a head 15 for engagement with the lower surface of said end of the bar. Said rod 15, as shown, threaded portion 16 for engagement with an interiorly threaded worm wheel 17 mounted between collars 18, 18 on an upward extension 19 of the frame 11. Said worm wheel may be rotated, and the rod 15 and bar 8 thereby adjusted through a worm'20on a shaft 21, which may be turned through a suitable handle (not shown).
the lighter bar adjacent the rod 15 may rest upon a bolt 22 mounted in the frame 11 and adjustable through nut 23. Any desired position of the lighter bar and parts carried thereby may be determined with precision by adjustment of the bolt 22, while the movement of said bar and parts may be effected through therod 15.
Bolted or otherwise secured to the housing orframe 11 directly below the shaft 7 and bearing member 9 is a stirrup 24. This stirrupsupports a spring plate 25 which in turn carries a spring 26. This spring, at its upper end, cooperates with the lighter bar 8 through spring plate 27. When the beater roll is in normal operating position, the spring 26 is under compression, the amount of compression being preferably substantially equal to the maximum upward movement of the roll from normal position. The amount of compression of the spring 26 may be varied, as desired, by adjustment of the bolt 28 threaded into the bottom of the stirrup 24 and engaging the spring plate 25.
c When a thick lap of pulp passes between the bed plate 6 and heater roll 5, said roll is raised and the spring 26 causes the lighter bar 8 to follow the u ward movement of the roll 5 and shaft 7. fter the thick piece of pulp has passed over the bed plate the spring 26 cushions the lighter bar 8, shaft 7, and roll 5 during their return to their lower or normal position, and prevents the lighter bar from receiving sudden shocks 0r jars.
The terms and expressions which I have employed are used as terms of description and not of limitation, and I have no intention, in the use of such terms and expressions, of excluding any equivalents of the features shown and described or portions thereof, but recognize that Various modifications are possible Within. the scope of the invention claimed.
I claim; i
1. In combination, a frame, a lighter bar movably mounted on said frame, a beater roll supported by said bar, and a spring cooperating with said bar intermediate the ends thereof.
2. In combination, a frame, a lighter bar pivotally connected at one end to said frame, means on said frame cooperating with the opposite end of said bar for supporting the latter, bearing means on said lighter bar, a beater roll having a shaft supported on said bearing means, a spring bearing at one end against an intermediate portion of said lighter bar, and means on saidframe for supporting the other end of said spring.
3. In combination, a frame, a lighter bar pivotally connected at one end to said frame, means on said frame cooperating with the opposite end of said bar for supporting the latter, bearing means on said lighter bar, a beater roll having a shaft supported on said bearingmeans, and a spring bearing at one end against. said'lighter bar directly below said bearing means for cushioning movements 7 of sald bar.
4. In combination, a frame, a lighter bar plvotally connected at one end to said frame, means on said frame cooperating wlth the opposite end of said bar for supporting the latter, bearing means on said lighter bar, a beater roll having a shaft supported on said bearlng means as T1110 bGElllIl at one end d. 7 D b against an lntermediate portion of sald lighter bar, and means depending from said frame for supporting the other end of said sprin In testimony'whereof, I have signed my name to this specification this 15th dayof September, 1930. w 7
