Description

Feb. 23, 1932. Q 0, P I F R 1,846,813
ELECTRIC LIGHTING FIXTURE Filed June' 25, 1930 Patented Feb. 23, I932 amen s res RICHARD o. i=rnirrmt, or NEWARK,1\TEW JERSEY v ELECTRIC LIGHTING rixrunn Application filed June 25,
This invention relates to electric lighting fixtures, and more particularly to electric lighting fixtures used to designate the location of certain parts oi": buildings, such as o exit lights commonly placed at exit doorways in public buildings, the fixtures being secured to outlet boxes of various sizes built into the walls or ceiling of the building.
An object of my invention is to provide a rigid, readily-assembled and disassembled fixture of the character described, which is adapted to be secured to outlet boxes of various sizes. g
A further object of my invention is to provide a lighting fixture consisting of essentially only four parts, namely, an open disc adapted to be secured to outlet boxes of various sizes, a socket-carrying strap secured to the disc, an externally threaded ring, provided with a 29 flange to receive the edge of a globe, and a plate adapted to threadedly engage with the ring to hold the globe on the flange of the ring.
These and other advantages, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which: 7 v
I Figure 1 represents a top plan view of my improved device, mounted on an outlet box, the guard carrying plate and open disc being shown in full lines, the other parts, shown in Figure 2, being represented in dotted lines, and
Figure 2 represents a side elevational view of my improved device, secured to an outlet box, partly in section.
My improved fixture consists of an open disc 1 carrying a strap 2 to which the socket 3 for the electric bulb 4 is secured, electrical 'connection with the socket 3 being made in any convenient manner.
An externally threaded ring 7 is secured to the disc 1 by any suitable means, such as by screws 6, the ring 7 being further provided with an annular flange on which the globe ,8
is held by the engagement of the plate 9 with the head 10 of the globe 8; the plate 9 having threaded engagement with the ring 7 Any suitable cushioning member, such as 1930. Serial No. 463,591.
the rubber washer 11, may, if desired, be interposed between the globe 8 and the annular flange 5 of the ring 7; If desired, a suitable guard 12 may be secured to the plate 9.
The structure above described is readily .55 assembled, and readily disassembled, by merely threadedly engaging and disengaging the plate 9 with the threaded ring 7 so that easy access to the parts may be had for replacement or repair. i i v The device is preferably secured to the outlet'box 13, which is built into the wallor ceiling of a room, by screws 15 passing through the particular apertures 16 in the open disc 1 which are in alignment with theapertured lugs 17 of the outlet box 13.
The apertures 16 are arranged in series at opposite points ofthe disc 1, to correspond V with the location of the apertures in the lugs ,of outlet boxes of various sizes, sothat my 7 device may be secured to outlet boxes of various sizes without the necessity of altering any of its parts. i r
The foregoing disclosure is to beregarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of theinvention, of which obviously an embodiment may be, constructed including many modifications without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims. Having thus described my invention, what I-claim as new and desire to secure by Letters, Patent, is: v
V 1. In an electric lighting fixture, a disc,,an externally threaded ring having an annular flange fixed on said disc, a globe positioned on the flange of said ring, said globe being provided with a bead and 7 an internally v threaded plate adapted to be threadedly en-OO gaged with said ring, whereby the plate may be brought into engagement with the bead of said globe to removably secure the globe on the flange of said ring.
'2. In an electric lighting fixture, an open disc, a socket carrying strap removably secured thereto, said disc being provided with means to removably secure the disc to outlet boxes of various sizes, an externally threaded annularly flanged ring on said disc adapted to receive a globe, and a plate threadedly .engaging's'aid ring, and adapted to engage with said globe to'removably secure the same on said disc, said plate being provided with a 5 guard adapted to overlie the globe when the plate is threadedly engaged with said ring.
This specification signed this 24th day of June, 1930.
