RULING MACHINE Application :filed January 18, 1923. Serial No. 613,472.
The present invention relates to ruling apparatus of the dual-l. type, and the primary object is to provide driving mechanism for the various instrumentalities of the two machines', so that the lost motion of transmission is reduced to a minimum, insuring greater accuracy in the work` performed, while the necessary variations for operating on dierent sheets and performing diiierent classes of work can be easily made.

Figures 9 and 10 are, respectively, cross sectional views on the lines 9--9 and 10-10 of Figure 8.
Figure 11 is a detail view, illustrating the operating means for the pen beam,
Figure'12 is a detail view of one of the line shaft clutches, showing the parts in perspective.
1n the embodiment disclosed, two ruling machines, designated generally by the reference numerals 12 and 13, are employed that are disposed in right angular relation, the sheets being rst ruled on the machine 12 and then delivered to the machine 13, where lines at right'angles to those ruled by the machine 12, are ruled on said sheets.
The source of power for driving the machines is a motor 25 which through a train of gearing 26 drives a line shaft 27 arranged longitudinally of the frame 14. rFhis shaft includes a section 27a that can be coupled to or uncoupled from the main portion of the shaft 27by means of a clutch. rll`he clutch isy shown as comprising a head 28 fixed to the section 27a and having a single socket 29. Slidable on the section 27 is another head 30 provided with a single projection 31 adapted to engage in the socket 29. By this means it will be evident that the two sections 27 and 27a of the shaft are always coupled in exactly the same relation. The sliding head 30 is operated by a lever 32 connected by a link 33 to a handle crank 34 on the feeding end of the machine.
The line shaft 27--27arl is geared, as illustrated at 35, to the pen beam cam shaft 24, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, and this cam shaft 24 constitutes the driving member for the various instrumentalities of the first machine 12. 'Fo this end the shaft 24 is provided with any one of a set of gear wheels of different diameters, one of said gear wheels being shown at 36, which is adapted to mesh with a gear wheel 37 that is adjustably mounted in a well-known manner on an arcuate bracket 38. The gearv wheel 37, wherever adjusted, in turn meshes with a gear wheel 39 fast to the shaft 22of the cloth-driving roller 21. The cords 17 are driven by a gear wheel 40 in mesh with the gear wheel 39. By this arrangement it will be evident that a change-speed gearing is provided between the pen beam cam shaft 24 and the sheet-conveying mechanism. In like manner the gate operating cam is shown at 41 in Figure 1, and is driven by gearing 42 from the shaft 24. 1t will be noted, that with this apparatus, the pen beam cam shaft has a predetermined constant speed, 'and that the other instrumentalities are driven therefrom.
The second machine 13 comprises a frame 43, and located therein, is a bed plate 44 over which passes an endless conveyor' belt or cloth 45 passing around a driving roller 46 fixed to a shaft 47. A pen beam is illustrated at 48, and is provided with pens 49 adapted to rule lines upon the sheets carried by the conveyor cloth 45. A. shaft 50, journaled transversely in the frame 43, carries at one end the usual cam 51 that operates on an arm 52 suitably connected to the pen beam 48 for swinging the same in a well-known manner. This shaft 50 is geared, as illustrated at 53, to the section 54a of a line shaft 54 that is geared, as shown at 55, to the line shaft 27, and consequently is driven by the motor 25. The two line shaft sections 54 and 54a are connected by a clutch 56 corresponding in all respects to the clutch 28-31 of the first machine line shaft, and this clutch is actuated by a rock shaft 57 extending across the frame and having a handle crank 58 on its front end. The shaft 50, which constitutes the driving shaft of the second machine 13, drives the shaft 47 of the roller 46 through a change-speed gearing 59 corresponding to the change speed gearing 37-39 of the first machine.
A gate is provided for the second machine, and comprises a rock shaft 60, suitably journaled on the sides of the frame and extending across and over the conveyor/belt 45. A stop plate 61 is provided with fingers 62 arranged in said rock shaft, and this plate moves into and out of coaction with the conveyor belt 45, accordingly as the rock shaft is turned, and as will be evident by reference particularly to Figure 5. The said rock shaft 6() is provided at one side with a lug 63, on which is pivoted a head 64, and in this head is adjustably mounted a pin 65. The head 64 is normally held with the pin in depen-ding relation by a coiled spring 66 secured to said head and to the rock shaft, but the pin can be swung to an outstanding relation as illustrated in Figure 6, being held in said position by a hook 67 mounted on the rock shaft and detachably engaging with a pin 68 on the head 64. When in the position shown in Figure 5, the lower end of the pin is in the path of an actuating cam 69 carried by a gear wheel 70, and this gear wheel, as illustrated in Figure 5, is in mesh with a driving gear 71. The driving gear 71, as shown in Figure 7, is fixed to a sleeve 72, rotatably mounted on the pen beam cam shaft 50, said sleeve being adapted to be clutched to said shaft 50, and to this end, radially movable plates 73 are'slidably mounted in a socket 74, formed in the outer 4end of the shaft 50. These plates have curved inner edges, between which a Wedge pin 75 is adapted to be engaged, the wedge pin constituting the inner end of a screw 76 that projects from the shaft 72. By rotating the screw 76 to move it inwardly, the wedge pin is caused to engage between the clutcli plates 73, foreing them outwardly and into frictional engagement with the sleeve 72. vVhen the screw 76 is withdrawn, the sleeve 72 is free from the shaft 50.
Reverting to the first machine 12, it will be understood that after the sheets are ruled, they are passed beneath the ruling mechanism by conveyors designated generally b the numerals 77 and 78, and are finally delivered on to supporting bars 79 at the rear end of said machine 12, and against an adjustable stop 80 slidably mounted on said bars. The stop is connected to an endless`chain 80a shown in Figure 2, by which it can be moved to different positions on the bars 79. From these bars 79 the sheets are moved successively transversely of the machine 12 to the machine 13. For this purpose a moving member is employed, in the form of a roller 81, overlying which is a shaft 82 provided with one or more gripping cams 83. These cams, as shown more particularly in Figure 10, are overbalanced by weights 84, and the larger portions of said cams are adapted to coact with the face of the roller 81 to grip the margin of the sheet that passes thereover. The shaft 82 is furthermore provided with a friction wheel having a cut-away portion 86. This shaft is normally held against movement with the cams 83 and the friction wheel 85 out of coaction with the roller 81. For this purpose said shaft is provided with a stop pin 86a, engaged by one arm 87a of a bell crank 87, as shown in Fig. 10, the other arm operating against a cam 88 having a flat side 89. The cam is carried by a shaft 90 geared,
as shown at 91 to the line shaft 27. The arm 87 may be maintained against the cam by any well-known suitable means.
From the side of the machine 12, at which the roller 81 is located to the machine 13, extends an upwardly inclined conveyor 92, generally termed a toboggan, and which includes a series of endless tapes 93 operating around a lower roller 94. The roller 94 is driven from the shaft 47 of the second machine by an endless sprocket chain 95, and the roller 81 is in turn driven from the 'roller 94 by an endless sprocket chain 96. Thus motion is imparted to the toboggan and to the sheet-moving roller 81 from said shaft 47, and
consequently from the pen beam cam shaft 50. interposed between the roller 81 and the roller94 are other coacting feed rollers 97 suitably driven by gearing 98 from the roller 94.
rlhe operation of the apparatus is substantially as follows: The sheets pass successively through the first machine 12 in the usual manner and are ruled in one direction. Each sheet eventually is delivered on to the bars 79 and against the stop 80 with its mar in overlying the roller 81. This can be rea ily accomplished-inasmuch as the shaft 82 is at a standstill, and the cams 83 are out of coaction with said shaft. When the sheet is thus positioned, the rotation of the shaft 90 carries the flat side 89 of the cam 88 into coaction with the stop crank 87, and as a consequence said crank moves out of the path of the stop pin 86. The overbalanced weight of the cams and friction Wheel 85 causes the shaft to turn, bringing the peripheries of the cams 83 into gripping coaction with the roller 81, and thus causes the sheet to move transversely. It is then engaged by the rollers 97 and transferred on to the conveyor tapes 93 of the toboggan 92. Moving up this toboggan it is brought against the gate 61 of the second machine, and the movement of this gate is timed to release the sheet, so that it will pass on to the pens 49 and said pens will be dropped on to the sheet at the desired point. Said sheet will thus be ruled transversely to the lines ruled by the first machine and after passing the ruling mechanism, it is delivered'in any desired manner. The friction wheel will of course rotate as the sheet moves beneath it because of its frictional contact until the cut-'away portion 86 comes to the position shown in Figure 9, whereupon the shaft will be stopped by the arm 87 a being again moved into the path ot the pin 86a.
insofar as the initial transferring mechanism for starting the sheets from the rst to the second machine is concerned, the same is made the subject-matter of a separate applitill cation. Serial No. 612,321, tiled January l2, 1923, Patent No. 1,567,909 dated December 29, 1925, and therefore no claim is made to this specic mechanism in this application. Attention is particularly directed to the means for driving the two machines. llt is to be noted in the rst place that motion is not transmitted to the second machine through the driving instrumentalities of the first machine. Now inasmuch as there is bound to be some play in transmission mechanism, irrespective of the care taken to reduce the same, it will be evident that as each machine is directly driven from the motor and not one machine through the other, the chance of lost motion is materially decreased, and as is well known wherever it can be prevented, it is very material in order to produce high grade work. More than that it is to be noted that the pen beam cam shaft is utilized as the initial driving member and that the operatling mechanisms of the conveyor and of the gate derive motion from said shaft. This has been found peculiarly desirable and particularly in the second machine, since it permits relative adjustment of the parts and relative changes of speed to be made with the greatest accuracy and with relative ease.
For example in the present machine, it will be observed that the two pen beam cam shafts are driven synchronously, while the speed of each conveyer can be readily changed by changing the speed gearing from each shaft. Moreover the adjustment of the cam that operates the gate can be readily effected. For instance, in the second machine, all that is necessary is to release the sleeve 72 from the shaft 50, and by turning said sleeve the relation of the gate actuating cam can be easily altered with respect to the pen beam actuating cam. Moreover in the second machine, if square sheets are employed, the gate of said second machine may be rendered inactive. To this end it is only necessary to throw the pin 65, which cooperates with the cam 69, out of coaction with said cam. by hooking it in a position illustrated in Figure 6. lf oblong sheets are passed through the machine, obviously it is desirable to operate the second machine at a greater rate of speed than the l first machine in order to save time and avoid the necessity of having the sheets delivered thereto at greater distances apart than when they travel through the first machine. With the present apparatus, although the two pen beams may operate synchronously, the speed of operation of the second machine can be increased ioy driving the conveyor belt at a higher rate of speed. 'llhis is accomplished by means ofthe change-speed gearing. rlhis increase in the speed of the conveyor of the second machine drives the roller 46 at a greater rate of speed and inasmuch as the o-taking mechanism from the irst machine is driven trom said roller d6, through the driving mechanism Sla-96, the speed of operation ot the ott-taking mechanism is correspondingly increased.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described described invention will'be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the advantages of the invention.
