UNITED STATES P AJIEN'I OFFICE,
JOHN A. SVEDBERG, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN W. MOORE, OF PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURTAIN-CORD TIGHTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 184,557, dated November 21, 1876; application led September 2,5, 1876.l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. SVEDBERG, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful lmprovemen ts in Curtain-Oord Fasteners; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved apparatus for straining and holding the cord by which window-curtains are raised and lowered.
In the drawing, Figures l and 4 are vertical sectional views of two patterns of my invention; Figs. 2 and 5, front views of the same 5 and Figs. 3 and 6, transverse sections.
The case A can be either cast, as shown in Figs. l, 2, .and 3, or struck up from sheet metal, as shown in Figs. 4., 5, and 6, and has holes in each end, by which it is fastened to the window-casing. In the bottom ofthe case is a series of teeth, projecting outward, form ing a rack, B. The front of the case has a slotted opening extending its full length. The movable block or slide Gis fitted with plowed grooves, which slide upon the flanges of the slotted opening of the case. Through this slide passes a spindle at an angle of about sixty degrees with the case, the outside end fitted with a head, E, by which it isV turned, and the inner end having a cone-shaped termination, with a spiral thread formed upon its base. This spiral thread engages the toothed Y rack B in the back of the case, and when revolved, by turning the head of the spindle, causes the block or slide C to traverse the slotted opening of the case up or down, as may be desired. y l
This fixture operates as follows: The case A is fastened to the window-frame in the ordinary way. The curtain-cord F isA passed under the slide C, which, by turning the screwhead E, may be caused to raiseor lower, as may be necessary to slacken or tighten the cord.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a curtain-cord fastener, the combination of the case A, having the toothed rack B, with the slide C and spiral screw-threaded'spindle E D, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the'foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. SVEDBERG.-
Witnesses:
A. G. HEYLMAN, J. TYLER POWELL.
