GEORGE E. DAVIES, OF YARMOUTH, NOVA SGOTIA, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,5 10, dated November 21, 1876; application filed May'27, 1876. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R DAVIES, of Yarmouth, Province of Nova Scotia, and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Piano-Brush, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2 an end view, of my improved brush for square and grand pianos.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention is designed for the purpose of cleaning the sounding-boards of square and grand pianos in a quick and convenient manner from dust, even at the parts that are otherwise reached with difficulty, the device sweeping the dust before it to the front of the sounding-board, where it may be readily taken up by a cloth.
The invention consists of a small spiral brush of sufficient length, that is placed between the wires and revolved in a supportingstand by suitable gearing.
In the drawing, A represents the supporting frame or stand of my improved pianobrush for grand and square pianos, which is made of narrow rectangular shape and suitable material. The horizontal part of the stand has a longitudinal groove or recess for the shaft of a brush, B, of suitable length, which is made of spirally-arranged bristles,
set into a twisted wire extension of the shaft. A pinion, G, at the end of the brush-shaft gears, by an intermediate gear-wheel, G, with a large crank-wheel, D, that turns on fixed pivots of the upright part of stand or frame A. The crank-wheel is always above the strings, so that it may be Worked with great facility. The brush is inserted between the bass-wires, and then worked by the gearwheels, sweeping the dust before it to the front of the sounding-board, to be taken up with a cloth.
The brush may be inserted between the bass-strings of the sounding-board, and thereby the same kept clean with great facility, and without any dust going into the action. The tone of the instrument is improved by keeping the sounding-board clean from dust, as otherwise, when the dust is left in, the tone is deadened, and. in time considerably affected, and even completely ruined.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the angular bar or frame A, rotary brush B, and mechanism, substantially as shown, for operating the brush, as herein set forth.
GEO. READ DAVIES.
