CARPET-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 82,473, dated June 4, 1861.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
] wipers a.
The heaters have their axes f,
Be it known that we, A. M. Gnonon, of fitted in pendent bearings g, and to each Nashua, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, and J. W CARTER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Cleaning or Dusting Carpets; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a side sectional View of our invention taken in the line as, w, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3, a detached longitudinal section of a por tion of one of the blast tubes.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a machine for cleaning or dusting carpets that will supersede the usual manual process by performing the work with great rapidity and in a far more effectual or thorough manner.
The invention consists in the employment or use of heaters, a yielding bed and feed rollers, in connection with blast tubes and a brush, arranged substantially as hereinafter described to effect the desired end.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention we will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a frame which may be constructed in any proper way to support the working parts of the machine. At one end of this frame, at its upper part, there is placed a shaft B, which has a series of wipers a, upon it. On one end of shaft B, there is placed a pulley 1), around which a belt C, passes, said belt also passing around a pulley c, at one end of a roller, said roller being the under one of a pair D, D, which are placed one over the other in the same plane at the discharge end of the machine. The rollers D, D, are connected at one end by gears cl.
On the frame A, directly in front of shaft B, there are placed a series of heaters E. These heaters may be constructed of metal rods and of quadrilateral form as shown clearly in Fig. 2, the hack parts of the beat ers being curved or bent upward as shown at 6, so that their back rails or cross pieces will be within the paths of rotation of the axis f, a bar it, is attached, the outer ends of said bars being connected by cords or wires 2', to springs 2', attached to the frame. The front cross bars 7', of the heaters extend past each other as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
F, represents a series of bars which are connected by joints is, to the frame A, just below the axes f. The front parts of the bars F, rest on spiral springs 70', which are attached to a bar Z, of the frame, and m, m, are cords which pass through the front parts of the bars F, and have their ends attached to rods a, n, at the sides of the frame A. The bars F, have a position in line with the centers of the heaters, the side rods of the latter being over the cords.
On the end of the shaft B, the end opposite to that where the pulley b, is attached there is secured a toothed wheel 0, which gears into a pinion p, said pinion having a rod 9, attached to it near its periphery. The front end of rod g, is connected to a slotted arm 1", which is at the end of a shaft 8, which forms the head of a brush G, the bristles t, of which project upward, see Fig. l.
H, H, are two tubes placed on the frame A, the .lower tube being by the side of the shaft 8, of brush G, and the upper tube just above the brush, each tube H, is perforated, the upper tube at its under side and the lower tube at its upper side, and the perforations which are designated by u, have each a short guide trough o, attached in order to give a proper oblique direction to the blasts from the tubes H, said tubes being supplied with a blast from a fan in a box I, at one side of the frame.
The operation is as follows: The carpet to be operated upon is placed under the heaters E, and upon the bars F, and passes between the tubes H, H, over the brush G, and between the rollers D, D. The shaft B, is rotated by any convenient power and the carpet is drawn along under the heaters E, the latter being elevated by the wipers a, and forced down on the carpet by the action of the springs c". The bars F, on which the carpet rests yielding or giving to a certain extent under the action of the heaters, and rendering the latter more efficient in their operation the side rods of the heaters striking the carpet at points over the cords. The dust is blown from both sides of the carpet by the jets of air from the tubes H, H, and the brush G, brushes the under side of the carpet, the brush being vibrated from shaft B, through the medium of the gearing 0, 7), rod 9, and arm 1-. In consequence of having the bars 7', of the heaters pass each other the Whole surface of the carpet is acted upon. The carpet may ifnecessary be secured together at its end and kept vibrating or moving through the machine like an endless apron or band until perfectly cleansed. The brush G, may in certain cases be dispensed With.
Having thus described our invention, What We claim as new and desire to secure by Let- I ters Patent; is
1. The beaters E, inconnection with the rollers D, D, the yielding bars F, blast tubes H, H, With or Without the brush G, arranged for joint operation, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The particular construction of the beaters E, to Wit, their bars j, being made to pass each other at their ends to insure the action of said bars on the Whole surface of the carpet as described.
3. The connecting of the yielding bars F, by cords m, m, one or more, and placing said bars F, relatively with the beaters E, as and for the purpose specified.
