Lmn arson GAUGE ron. mnwmrnns Application filed October 21, 1929. SerialNo. 401,245.
The present invention is directed to improvements in line space gauges for typewriters.
The primary object of the invention isto provide a device ofthis character so constructed that it can be adapted for use in connection with typewriters of standard make, the constructlon being extremel simple, can be easily and quickly applie' and,
when in use, will indicate to the operator the number of line spaces which have been made upon the paper sheet and will also denote the number of line spaces which remain upon the sheet.
Anotherobject of the invention is to provide a devicemof this character which is so constructedthat it can be swung to an inoperative position when not needed and readily swung to its operative position when desired.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more 2 fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a plan view of a typewriter jca'rriage, showing the device in position thereon. f i
the platen being shown in section.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fi ure 1.
- Referring to the drawings, ldesignates the carriage of a typewriter, which carries the usual platen 2 and paper rest 3. 7
The gauge comprises a frame which consists of side bars 4 which have their rear ends pivotally connected, as at 5, to blocks 6, said blocks being rovided with forks 6' for engaging the rod of the carriage, there being set screws 8 carried by the forks for engaging said rod to hold the blocks secured I thereto. A rod 9 .is provided and has its ends connected with the forward ends of the bars 4.
Rotatably mounted on the rod 94 are rollers 10 and 11 which may be formed from any suitable material. The periphery of the roller 10 has marked thereon, in any approved ber of line spaces which remain upon the Figure 2 is a side elevation. of the device,
manner, a diagonally arranged series or line of numerals which increase in magnitude around said roller in one direction. The roller 11 has marked thereon a similarly arranged series or line of numerals which decrease in value in the opposite direction to those of the roller- 10. g
It will, of course, be understood that the numerals upon the rollers will be of a color contrastingto that of the roller so that they will be clearly legible.
The rollers 10 and 11 rest upon the paper following the platen 2, and since the rollers frictionally engage the paper, rotary movement will be imparted thereto each time the platen is rotated for'spacing.
The roller 10 will indicate the number of line spaces which have been used upon the sheet while the roller 11 will denote the numsheet. It will thus be seen that the operator can readily note the number of line spaces which have been written upon the sheet, upon. observing the position of the numerals upon a the roller 10, and can readily note, upon observing the position of the numerals on the roller 11, the number of blank lines which remain upon the sheet.
A position pointer may be mounted adjacent, the rollers in any approved manner so that the position of. the numerals may be I readily gauged.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the operation and many advantages of the herein'describ'ed invention will be apparent to those skilled in the artwithout further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. I
What is claimed is:
The combination with a typewriter carriage and its platen, of a frame including side bars, a fork and set screw on each side bar for removably. connecting the side bars to the carriage above the platen, pivot pins connect- .ing the bars to the forks, a rod connecting the bars and extending longitudinally along 9 other roller.
In testimon whereof I ailix m si the front face of the laten, and a pair of spaced rollers rotatab y mounted upon the rod near the ends of the platen and adapted to be driven by frictional engagement with 5 a sheet of paper on the platen, said rollers having signal numerals upon their peripheries, the numerals of one roller increasmg consecutively in magnitude in an opposite direction with respect to the numerals on the EDW ature.
