Be it known that I, BURNHAM' C. STICK- NEY, a'citizen of: the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined TypeeWi-iting and Computing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to calculating machines combined with writing mechanism, and more particularly to means'fordetermining whether the calculating-mechanism shall add or subtract, or remain neutralor ineffective at the operation of'the writing mechanism. It also vrelates to means for shifting the ribbon rmechanism so that amountsV to be subtracted .may be written in a different color from other amounts.
I have provided that certain of the tabu lating keys for the typewriter carriage shall be capable of shitting or reversing the action of the computing mechanism, so that, for instance, when thtabulating mechanism is operated to bring the typewriter carriage to position `for writing in the first column of numbers on the work sheet, the machine shall be set by such tabulating mechanism to add the number written; when the tabulating mechanism is operated to bring the carriage to the second column of writing on the work sheet, said tabulating mechanism shall reverse the operation of the computing mechanism so that the number written in the second column shall be subtracted; by suitable means the number written in the third column may be added, while the number written in the fourth column may be neit-her added nor subtracted, and so on as may be desired; the tabulating mechanism having control of the computmg devices to determine whether at any particular time they shall add or subtract or remain neutral.
I also preferably connect to the tabulating keys means for shifting the ribbon mechanism, so that the device shall print red or any other special color when writing in a column in which the numbers are being subtracted.

The invention is illustrated in connection with a machine in which the computing wheels remain stationary while the master wheel moves stepbystep, being for that purpose connected to the paper carriage of the type writing machine. This connection is made at the beginning of the writing of each column, and is automatically broken at the lconclusion of the writing of each column.

Tabulator keys 14 are mounted upon levers 15, which, at their rear ends, raise the stop rods 16, 'havingstops 17 atV their upper ends. These stops may1 copera-te with interchangeably adjustable col-umnv stops 18, inserted, as required, in notches 19, 20, formed in the top and bottom-of a bar 21, which is fixed to the carriage 6.
Each stop-rod has ashoulder 22 coperating with a universal bar 23, which rocks about a pivot 24, and has an arm 25, which draws down a link 26 and vibrates alever 27, the latter fulcrumed at 27a and carrying a roll 27b to r-unupon the under side of the rack bar` 10, and lift the latter from the escapement pinion 11, whenever a key 14 is depressed.
The computing. mechanism includes a drive shaft 28, having a bevel piniony 29 meshing with a-pinion 30 upon a square shaft 31, the latter being splined toa-master-Wheel 32, which moves along the shaft and has spurs or teeth 33 to engage an internal set of teeth 34 formed upon a gang of computing wheels 35, the latter mounted in a ycasing 36 and also having exterior teeth to mesh with gears 38, the latter having number wheels 39. Themaster-Wheel 32 is swiveledv in a. traveling hollow mandrel or arbor 40, within which the master-wheel shaft 3.1 may project7 the swivel-joint being-shown at 41, and permitting the master-wheelf32 to be rotated by the shaft 31, while said masterwheel: is caused=to travel in axial direction by the mandrel or arbor 40.
The drive shaft 28 may be driven and controlled either directly by the numeral keys 1 or in any other suitable. manner, as for instance in the manner setforth in pending applica-tion No. 569502,- filed June 29, 1910. Since the driving means for said shaft form no part ofthe present invention, it is deemed unnecessary to illustrate the same. The shaft, it will-be understood, is. rotatedv automatically upon the depression of. any of the numeral keys 1, the extent of rotation dependingA upon which key; is` depressed.
The mandrel 40 is moved'endwise bymeans: of a forwardly and rearwardly extending lever- 42, pivoted midway of its ends by means of gudgeons 43, so as to swing in a horizontal plane. At its forward end the lever is Slotted at 44 to engage apin 45 projecting from the carriage which 'carries the mandrel l40; said carriage comprising a tube 46 sliding upon a fixed rod 47 and.. also an arm 48, sliding upon :a fixed horizontal rod 49; the man`drel'40 being secured .tothe forward endof Ithe arm 48by means of a sets'crew' 50. The movement of the mandrel 40 Visof course only sufficient to enable the master-wheel 32 to travel the length ofthe angof computing wheels 35, one of which 1s provided for each number wheel 39. The rod 47 coperates with tWo--similar-rods or studs 49: and 47", all projecting' from a framework plate or bracket 47, to carry a small plate 47d which also supports-'the end of rod-49. It will be seen that 49 and 47", Fig. 5, carry the casing 36.
At'its rear end, the lever 42 has a slot 51 to engagea pin 52 projecting down from a slide 53, the latter carrying'the stem 54 of ahook 55, adapted to engage lugs 56 formed upon the blades or stops 18 which are forked to fit intolthe double rack 19, 20, for connecting thepaper carriage 6 to the master-wheel 32 to cause the latter to travelstep-by-step with the paper carriage.
The slide 53 Works in a tubular guide or housing 58, which is slotted on its under side at 59 to permit the pin 52 to pass down to the'lever 42. The stem 54 of the hook passes through a longitudinal perforation in the slide 53, and is adjustably secured to the latter by set screws 60. This permits slight longitudinal adjustment of the hook in order to enable themaster-Wheel 32 to be adjusted properly relatively to the computing wheels 35 while the hook is engaged' by one of the lugs 56. The rack 2]A has at 60a the usual provision for longitudinal adjustment. The slide 53-has a feather 61, to fit into the slot 59, to prevent the slide and the hook from turning'in the tube.
4The hook has a notch 62 to enable it to engage any of the lugs 56. The hook normally springs up to engage the adjacent lug. For this purpose the hookv may be made resilient or flexible, and a. compression spring 63 may be employed to aid or cause. the upward movement of the hook; said spring housed in a boss 64, and-confined by a screw 65, and pressing a`pl-unger 66 up against a straight portion of the under side of the hook, thus holding the latter up .while permitting it to move freely endwise. The boss 64 is formed on a bushing 67, which is vertically slotted at68 to form a. guide for the hook; said bushing serving as a plug to close this end of the tubular housing 58.
`When the hook is in engagement with one of said lugs 56, it is carried with the paper carriage 6 in letter-feeding direction to ca use thelever 42to swing upon its pivot and thereby drivev the mandrel 40 and the master-wheel 32 in the opposite direction. As the keys 1 are operated to Write figures in the column, the master-Wheel 32 is correspondingly rotated in any usual or suitable 1nanncr,to rotate the corresponding computing Wheels 35. When Vthe master-wheel has advanced past the computing wheel 35 of lowest denomination, a cam 69 formed on the hook 55 engages a projection 70 Vfixed upon the framework of the machine, and is thereby forced downwardly, to Withdraw the hook 55 from that lug 56 with lwhich it has been in engagement. As soon asl the hook is released, a returning spring 71 connected to the lever 42 swings the latter in the opposite direction, carrying the inasterwheel 32 backwardly, that is, to- Ward thecomputing Wheel 35 of highest denomination; this movement continuing until the hook 55 engages the succeeding lug 56, said hook being. pressed up to engage said lug by means'of the spring 63, and the lug becoming fully seated in the notch 62.
' The Writing o f the numbers in the succeeding coliunn will now proceed, and said number will be accumulated on said computing Wheels by the number Wheels 39, in the manner already referred to.
vWhen returning the carriage 6 to begin a new line of Writing, if the hook 55 is in engagement with one of the lugs 56, it is carried until a cam edge 72 thereon strikes a studor roller 7 8, which may be pivoted upon a screw 74, threaded into the top of the boss 64; and by means of said roller or obstruction, the hook is cammed downwardly and released from the lug 56. The spring 68 immediately lifts the hook again, and the lugs 56 in succession ride freely over a bevel or point 7 5 formed on the tip of the hook; the last lug in the series being caught and held by the hook when the carriage begins to run in letter-feeding direction.
In the present instance each of the tabu lating keys 14 is a column-selecting key, and, when depressed, serves to bring the carriage 6 to a predetermined column. @ne manner of effecting this kind of tabulating consists in having the stop-rods 16 of assorted lengths` and having the column stops 18 of assorted depths, so that, the strokes of the stop-rod being uniform, each rod coperates with its associated stop, regardless of the position of the latter along the rack. The first stop-rod 16 in the series (the rod at the extreme right at Fig. 4) is preferably the longest, to engage the first column stop 18. The next stop-rod 16 ,is too short to Catch the first sto-p 18, but is long enough to catch the second stop 18; and so on.
The connection between the tabulating keys and the computing mechanism comprises a horizontal rock-shaft 80, extending across the machine beneath the tabulating key levers 15 and forward of the-fulcrum 81 of the latter and suitably supported upon the framework. This rock-shaft 80 may be rocked by means of forward and rear universal bars 82, 83, fixed upon two pairs of arms 84, 85, extending forwardly and rearwardly from the ends of said rock shaft, the whole making a rocking frame.
Certain of the tabulating levers 15 have downi-vardly extending projections or toes 86 forward ofthe rock-shaft 80 and overlying the universal bar 82, so that when any one of said certain keys is depressed, the rocking frame is rocked to the position seen at Fig. 1. By means of an arm 87 fixed upon said rock-shaft, a link 88 is thus thrust up, said link being connected at its upper end with a lever 89 pivoted at 9() between' its ends, and having means for reversing the direction of operation of the computing mechanism, so that subtraction Will be performed.
It should be explained that in said Under,- vvood machine, the pinion 29 and the counter-pinion 91 are loosely mounted upon the drive shaft 28, and both in mesh with the bevel pinion 30. Splined to said drive shaft 28 is a double clutch 92 having a connection at 93 to the lever 89. When said lever is vibrated by the upward thrust of the link 88 (or by a vdown push on the handle 94) the clutch 92- is carried down and engages with corresponding clutch teeth formed 1nternally at 95 upon the Jinion 29; but when the clutch is thrust up rom the neutral position at Fig. 3, it connects similarly with the upper pinion 91, so'that the machine is caused to add. The clutch 92 is splined to the shaft 28, as set forth in said applican tion.
It should also be explained that the tens carrying operation in said Underwood machine is assisted by a constantly revolving friction shaft 96, upon which is fixed a bevel pinion 97, which is connected to a constantly rotating drive shaft 98 by means of pin'ions 99, 100, both in mesh With the pinion 97 and both loose on the shaft 98, and either of which may be connected with the shaft 98 by a clutch device 101, splined upon the shaft 98 and controlled .by the lever 89, all as set forth in said application. The shaft 28 revolves intermittently at the operation of the numeral keys 1 of the typewriter, and the extent of the rotation depends upon the key selected.
Certain of the other tabulating key levers 15 are provided-,in rear of the rock shaft 80 with downwardly extending projections 102 to depress the universal bar 83 and turn the entire rocking universal bar or frame to the position seen at Fig. 2, thus acting through the arm 87, link 88 and clutch lever 89 to restore the computing mechanism to position` for performing addition.
One or more of the tabulating levers 15 may be provided at both front and rear of the rock-shaft 80 with short downwardly extending projections 103, so that when such lever is depressed, both universal bars 82, 83 will be engaged, and the universal rock ing frame will be brought to central or neutral position, as at Fig. 3, and the clutch lever 89 will be brought to neutral position, so that when the typewriting machine is writing the column selected by Such tabulator key, neither addition nor subtraction will be performed upon the computing mechanism, notwithstanding the operation of the driving shafts 28 and 98.
There ma be provided upon the rockshaft a yiel ing arm 104 having a in or detent 105 to engage any of three ho es 106 formed in the bracket 107 to hold the universal rocking frame in any of its three positions. Any of the tabulating keys may move said rocking frame to its predetermined position from either of the other positions thereof.-
vThe usual bichrome ribbon mechanism of an Underwood typewriting machine comprises a universal bar 10S operated by heels 109 of the type bars and connected to the dogs 12'L which feed the paper carriage 6. Upon said universal bar is fixed a bracket 110 which carries a slotted actuator 111 to engage one of two wrists 112, 113 upon a lever 114, to which is pivoted an upstanding ribbon carrier 115 infront of the platen. The actuator 111 is usually two-armed, and by shifting the same on the bracket 110, the actuator is moved alternately into and out of engagement with the wrists 112 and 113 on the lever 114. T his shifting of the actuator 111 is usually effected by a link 116 pivoted at 117 to an arm 118 extending up from a horizontal rock-shaft 119 which extends forwardly and carries at its forward end a two-armed lever 120 having keys 121, 122 and also having a detent 123 to engage a V-spring 124, whereby the lever is held in the position shown at Fig. 6, or in that. shown at Figs. 8 and 9.
To this bichrome mechanism is connected a link 125, the latter having at its upper end a slot 126 to engage a pin 127 upon the lever 120. The link is pivoted at its lower end at 128 to an arm 129 fixed upon the rock shaft 80.
When the parts are in the position seen at Figs. 3, 7 and 9, the computing mechanism is neutral, and the ribbon mechanism is in position to expose the black stripe of the ribbon to the action of the types the actu-A ator or yoke 111 being connected to the u per wrist 112; but when any subtraction tab'- ulator key is depressed, as at Fig. 1, the link 125 is thrust up to the Figs. 4 and 6 position, thusV rocking the lever 120 and the rock-shaft 119, and vibrating. the arm 118 through the li-nk 116, shifting the actuator memes 111s'o that th'e lower wrist 113 is connected to said actuator, and thus the lever 114 is 'vibrated at each stroke enou' h to carry up the red or special stripe o y ribbon to be struck by the types. This shifting' of the ribbon and the lever 94 takes place of course before the carriage of the typewriter reaches the computing column. Of course, the d'etent 105 serves to hold the subtraction 'shifting mechanism in working positions so that the operator may release the key 14 and perinit the carriage 6 to become reconnected to its escapement devices, and may manipulate the keys for writing in the column on the work sheet.
It will be noted that the pin 127 and slot 126 coperate in the following manner with the V-shaped spring 124, so a's to set the lever 120 which controls the ribbon shift. If the mechanism be in adding position, as diarammatically shown in Fig. 8, and then 1s shifted bythe operation of a tabulating key to the Fig. 9 position, it will be seen that the slot 126 will permit the link 125 to rise almost idly with respect to the pin 127. Whatever motion is communicated to the lever' 120 by the link 125 will not be suflicient to carry the pin 123 on said lever 120 past the V-shaped sprin 124, and thus the mechanism, which in a ding writes black, will'in its neutral position also write black. If now the mechanism is shifted to' subtraction, the link 125 will cause the lower end of the slot 126 to raise the pin 127 to such an extent that the lever 120 will force its pin 123 past said spring 124, and then the resiliency of said spring4 will swing the parts to the position -seen in `ig. 6, where the pin 127 stands well toward the top ofsaid slot. If now the tabulating key be depressed, which shifts the mechanism to neutral, the link 125 will draw the lever 120, so that its pin 123 will slip pastI the spring 124 and resiliency in the spring will throw the lever 120 back to the position shown in Fig. 9.
After depressing and releasing any tabulating key 14, the rocking frame 82, 83, etc., of course remains.V in the position to which it has been set by said key, and until another tabulating key is operated; but of course the invention is not limited to a tabulating mechanism of this character and operation.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, -and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a combined typewriting, tabulating 'and computing machine, comprising a typewriter ca-rriaige and a computing device including a device shiftable to different positions for determining whether the computing device shall add or subtract the amounts written by the typewriter, the combination ing device shalladd or subtract the amounts written by the typewriter, said devicealso shiftable to make the computing device neutral or inoperable, the combination wlth tabulating devices connected `to the type# writer carriage, of mea-ns connecting said tabulating devices to said shiftable device, to determine whether the computing'device shall add or subtract the numbers written in the several columns to which the typewriter carriage is brought by the tabulating nicchanism, or remain silenced duringthe writing of the numbers.
3. In a" combined typewriitin'g,fabulatiig and computing machine, cpmpr'islng'a typewriter carriage, and alsof'comprising comf puting mechanism inclusive of la device shiftable to set the mechanism to perfo-rm either addition or :subtraction when the amounts are written by the typewriter, the combination with tabulating devices connected to the typewriter carriage, `and including a 'set of independently operable keys, of means for enabling onev of said tabulating keys to shift said shiftable device to position for subtraction.
4. In a combined typewriting, tabulating and computing machine, comprising a typewriter carriage, and also comprising computing mechanism inclusiveI of a device shiftable to set the mechanism to perform either addition or subtraction when the amounts are Written by the typewriter, the combination with tabulating devices ,con
nected to the typewritercarriage, and including a set of independently operable kcvsfof means for enabling one of said tabulating keys to shift said shiftable device to position for subtraction, and'for enabling another of said keys to shift said shiftable device to position for addition.
5. In a combined typewriting, tabulating and computing machine, comprising a typewriter carriage. and also comprising computing mechanism inclusive of a device shiftable to set the mechanism to perform either addition or subtraction when the amounts are written bv the typewriter, 'the combination with tabulating devices connected to the typewriter carriage, and including a set of independently operable keys, of means for enabling one ofsaid tabulating keys to shift said shiftable device to position for subtraction, and for enabling another of said keys to shift said shiftable device to position for addition, and for enabling another of'said tabulating keys to shift said shiftable device to neutral position, so thatno computation is done during the writingof numbers on the typewriter.

In acombined typewriting, tabulating and computing machine, comprising a type` writer carriage, column-selecting tabulator mechanism, and acomputing device, the combination of a shiftable element for making the computing device effective for either adding or subtracting the amounts written, and means for connectin said co1- umn-selecting means to said shi table element, to control the latter.
9. In a combined typewriting, tabulating and computing machine, comprising a typewriter carriage, columnselecting tabulator mechanism therefor, and a computin de vice, the combination with a set of independently operable column-selecting keys forming part of the tabulator mechanism, of an element movable by certain o f said keys for causing the computing device to effect subtraction of the amounts written.

In a combined typeuriting, tabulatin and computing. machine, comprising a shiftable ribbon mechanism and a typewriter carriage, and also comprising computingmechanism inclusive of a device shiftable to set the mechanism to perform either addition or subtraction when the amounts are written by the typewriter, the combination with tabulatingl devices connected to the typewriter carriage, and including a set of independently operable keys, of means for enabling one of said tabulating keys to shift said shiftable dev-ice to position for subtraction and to shift said ribbon mechanism. and for enabling another of said keys to shift said shiftable device to position for addition and-restore said ribbon mechanism to its first position.

In a combined typewriting, tabulating and computing machine, comprising a shiftable ribbon mechanism and a typewriter carriage, and also comprising computi mechanism inclusive of a device shift-a le to set the mechanism to perform ula-ting either addition or subtraction when the amounts are written by the typewriter, the combination with tabulating devices connected to the typewriter' carriage, and including a set'of independently operable keys, of means for enabling one of said tabulating keys to shift said shiftable device to position for subtraction and to shift said ribbon mechanism, and for enablin another of said keys to shift said shiftable evice to position for addition, and for enabling another` of said tabulating keys to shift said shiftable device to' neutral position, so that no com utation is done during the writing of num rs on the typewriter; means being also provided for enabling each of the last mentioned keys to restore said ribbon mechanism to its original position.

In a'combined typewriting, tabulating and computing machine, comprising a shiftable V ribbon mechanism and a typewriter carriage, and also comprising computing mechanism inclusive of a device shiftable to set the mechanism to perform either'addition or subtraction when the amounts are written by the typewriter, the combination with tabulating devices connected to the typewriter carriage, and including a set of independently operable keys, of means for enabling one of said tabulating 'keys to shift said shlftable device to position for subtraction and to shift said ribbon mechanism, and for enabling another of said tabulating keys to restore said ribbon mechanism and shift said shiftable device to neutral position, so that no computation is done during the writing of numbers on the typewriter.

In a combined typewriting, tabulating and computing machine, comprising a shiftable ribbon mechanism, a typewriter carriage, column-selecting tabulator mechanism therefor, and a computing device, the combination with a set of independently operable column-selecting keys forming part of the tabulator mechanism. of an element movable by certain of said keys for shifting said ribbon mechanism and causing the computing device to effect subtraction of the amounts written, and means for enabling another of said column-selectin keys to cause the computing device to e ect addition of the amounts written and to restore the ribbon mechanism to its original condition.

In a combined typewriting, tabulating and computing machine, comprising a shiftable ribbon mechanism, a typewriter carriage, column-selecting tabulator mechanism therefor, and a computing device, the combination with a set of independently operable column-selecting keys forming part of the tabulator mechanism, of an element movable by certain of said keys for shifting said ribbon mechanism and causing the computingdevice to effect subtraction of the amounts written, 4means for enabling another of said column-selecting keys to cause the computing device to effect addition of the amounts written, and means for enabling still another of said column-selecting keys to silencethe computing device, means being provided for enabling either of the two last mentioned keys to restore said ribbon mechanism to its original position.

The combination of a typewriter carriage, a computing mechanism, a shiftable device for causing said computing mechanism to either add or subtract, a tabulator mechanism for said carriage including a set of keys, a bar operable by anyV of a plurality of'said keys, a connection from said bar to said shiftable device, and a 'shivtable ribbon mechanism also vconnected to said bar.

The combination with a typewriter carriage and a computing mechanism, of a device shiftable to different positions for determining Whether the computing mechanism shall add or subtract, a tabulating mechanism for said carriage, said tabulating mechanism including a series of keys, a member movable in one direction by certain of said keys and in the opposite direction by another of said keys, a connection from said movable member to said shiftable device to control the operation of the computing mechanism, and a shiftable ribbon mechanism also connected to said movable member.
25; The combination with a typewriter carriage and a computing mechanism, of a device shiftable to different positions for determining whether the computing mechanism shall add or subtract, a tabulating mechanism including a series of keys, a universal bar or frame extending along said series of keys, certain of said keys constructed to engage the forward portion, and certain of said keys constructed to engage the rear portion of said'universal bar, to
vmove the latter in opposite directions, a connection from said universal bar to said shiftable device to control the operation of the computing mechanism, and a shift-able ribbon mechanism also connected to said universal bar.

The combination with a typewriterl carriage and a computing mechanism, of a device shiftable to different positions for determining whether the computing mechanism `shall add or subtract; a tabulating mechanism including a series of keys; a universal bar or frame extending along said series of keys; certain of said keys constructed to engage the forward portion, and certain of said keys constructed to engage the rear portion of said universal bar, to move the latter in opposite directions; a connection from said universal bar to said shiftable device to control the operation of the computing mechanism; another of said keys having means for bringing said universal bar er frame to middle position to silence the computing mechanism, ancla shi-ftable ribbon mechanism connected. to saiduniversal bar to be shifted thereby.

The combina-tion with a typewriting mechanism, a computing mechanism, and a tabulating mechanism including tabulating keys, of means shiftable to different positions by different tabulator keys, for setting said computing mechanism to -perform either addition or subtraction, or to remain neutral at the subtraction operation, and a multi-color ribbon mechanism simultaneously shiftable by said tabulating mechanism.

In a computin machine, the combination with a series o tabulating key levers, of extensions on said levers, a universal bar, an extension on said universal 'bar to cooperate with one of said extensions to move said universal bar in one direction, :mother extension on Said universal bar to coperate with another extension on a lever, computing wheels, mea-ns for turning said computing wheels, and a connection from said universal bar for determining when and how said computing wheels shall be turned.

In a ,combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination with a traveling carriage and computing wheels, of tabulating keys for positioning said traveling carriage, means for turning said computing wheels, and means positively positioned by the operation of a tabulating key for determining how said computing wheels shall be operated.
