TOY
Filed Feb. 10. 1930 Patented Feb. 9, 1932! srras P TENT OFFICE TOY GUN Application filed February 10, 1930. Serial No. 427,300.
This invention relates to toys of a type and design for the discharging of elastic projectiles.
One of the principal objects of the invention contemplates the provision and arrange ment of a trigger and ejector for the projectile.
Another object of the invention consists of a mounting for the trigger whereby the latter may be shifted to occupy respective positions without binding.
More specifically stated the trigger is normally and yieldingly induced to occupy rcleasing position.
lViththe above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the present invention showing by full and dotted lines the relative positions of the trigger.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the invention. Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the handle of the toy gun and I the trigger and particularly illustrative of 39 the exact construction involved.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates generally the barrel of the presentform of toy gun or pistol and 11 the handle therefor depending from' the under side thereof. The rearrnost surface of the handle 11 is providedwith longand short obliquely inclined surfaces 12 and 13 respectively leading, as at 14, to one side of the central point in its length. The taper of the longer obliquely inclined surface 12 being more radical than that of the surface 13 for purposes to be better understood in the following description of the invention.
The trigger member, alluded to in the foregoing and as indicated at 15, is of elongated. relatively flat formation and provided with an opening 16 therein eccentrically thereof for registration with the meeting point 14 for the inwardly and obliquely inclined sur-,
also passed through the opening 16 in the trigger l5 and the head 18 of the fastening is spaced from the adjacent surface of the trigger to permit the latter to occupy the dotted line position shown in Figure l of the drawings when the projectile is released. The fastening device 17 as better shown in Figure 3 of the drawings isin the nature of a pointed fastening device, thereby facilitating the driving of the fastening device into the handle at the point of intersection of the obliquely inclined surfaces with one another. After the fastening device has been driven home or rather to such suitable depth as to leave the head portion 18 in spaced relation with the handle, facilitates the mounting of the trigger 15 upon the protruding portion of the shank for both a vertical rocking movement and a horizontal rotary movement. By mounting the trigger as described facilitates the oscillation of the trigger should the application or disconnection of the self-acting elastic band be desired. The head 18 on the pointed fastening device 17 prevents any accidental displacement of the trigger 15 when moved in the dotted line position better shown in Figure 1 of the drawings or when the trigger 15 is subjected to an oscillating or roclring movement.
A retaining element for the trigger 15, indicated as at 19, having engagement with the shorter end of said trigger in the manner shown and connected at its extreme portion with the outermost extremity of the barrel 10 is preferably in the nature of a rubber band or'other elastic material. whereby said trigger will be yieldingly induced to occupy the Figure 3 position, a form of fastening 20 being passed through the retaining element 19' to prevent displacementthereof upon the trigger 15.
The form of projectile employed may be alsoin the nature of an elastic band, such as indicated at 21, having its foremost looped end passed about the outermost end of the barrel 10 in a manner similar to that of the connection of the retaining element 19 there with and having its rearlnost extending portion overlapped in the manner shown in Figure 2 of the drawings and to facilitate disposing of the rearmost looped end of the band or projectile 21 between the inclined surface 13 10 of the handle 11 and the adjacent surface of the trigger 15.
The projectile or band 21 is stretched sufficiently between the end of the barrel and handle whereby the projectile will fly 15 through the air for an appreciable distance. The manner and method of releasing the band-like projectile simply requires the gradual compressing of the trigger and handle or trigger squeezing.
20 The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
5 Having described the invention what is claimed is A pistol comprising a barrel and handle therefor, said handle having oppositely inclined portions to provide at their point of so intersection a fulcrum point, one of said portions being of a greater length than the other of said portions, a self-acting elastic band stretched over the front end of the barrel and for the full length thereof, a trigger of eloni-i-G gated flat formation for the pistol, a headed pointed fastening device passing through the trigger and driven into the handle at the point of intersection of the oppositely inclined portions, the head of the fastening device being spaced from the handle and preventing any accidental displacement of the trigger from said handle, said trigger being mounted on the extended shank portion of the fastening device for both a vertical rock- (,5 ing movement and a horizontal rotary movement, and an elastic retaining element eX- tending around the full length of the barrel and contacting with the forwardinost end of the barrel and with said trigger.
to In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GEORGE r. GILLETTE.
