A. WEBER TOY AEROPLANE Filed Aug. 17, 1922 mmvroa. AUGUST M5571.
' To all whom it may Patented June 16, v
PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST WEBER, OI JERSEY CITY HEIGHTS NEW JERSEY.
TOY AEROPLANB.
Application filed August 17, 1922. Serial No. 582,480.
concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST WEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey-City Heights, ingthe county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful 7 Improvements'in' Toy Aeroplanes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toy and has for its principal object to provide a structure imitating an aeroplane and including means whereby the same ma be sailed in the air and a noise made .slmilar to that of a motor of an aeroplane.
Another important object of the invention is to produce a toy of this nature which may be manufactured at a comparativelylow cost, which will be extremely amusing and which will be harmless and afford excellent exercise to the operator thereof.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resldes in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and, arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a plan view showing the blank from which the body of the toy is formed. 1
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the forward portion of the Figure 3 is an elevation of one cam member used in conjunction with the toy.
. tapering toward its rear end. The forward end is closed by the flap 4, the tab 5, there of being. bent. so that its apertures 5 registers with the aperture 6 so that any suit-- able device, such as a peg may be passed therethrough for holding the body together. The flap 7 with the flaps 8 and 9 form an extension boxinglfl at the forward end of the body, the aperture 10 registering with the aperture 11 so that a sleeve- 12 may be extended therethrou-gh as is illustrated in Figure 2. The tabs 13 of the flap 7 are adapted to receive the slot 14 in the tabs 8 and 9'while the tab 15 engages the slot 16. The wings 17 are attached transversely on the upper side of the body when thus folded, by having its slot 18 engage the tabs 19 and suitable means ma be passed through the apertures thereo for holding the wing in place. The tail portion 20 is suitably attached to the body on the upper side thereof and at is rear end. A string 21 ispassed through the aperture 22 of the body 1 and is preferably attached at its other end to a stick 22 so that the body may be readily sailed through the air by rotating the end of the stick in a circle.
Coming now to the noise making feature of the toy, it is to be noted that the sleeve 12, previously mentioned, is provided at its forward end with a curved cam-shaped formation indicated at 23 which may be more specifically described as a ratchet clutch formation. A shaft 24 -is slidable and rotatable in this sleeve 12 and at its rear end is provided with a washer 25 or some such other similar stopping means preventing the accidental removal of the shaft 25 as it is thrown forwardly as will be more evident as the description progresses. A cam member 25 is keyed to the outer end of the shaft 24 and is in the form of a sleeve having an inner end 26 similar to the end 23 and adaptedto co-act therewith. A suitable propeller 27 is mounted on this shaft 24 at'its vend being suitably keyed thereto so as to rotate therewith. It will thus-be seen that as the body of the toy gether there ,will be a noise which noise is similar to the noise made by an ordinary internal combustion engine such as is used upon aeroplanes.
It is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will now be readily understood without a more detailed description thereof, but it is desired to point out that I have merely disclosed the present embodiment of my invention by way of "with the cam surface of said sleeve, and
a propeller rotatable with the shaft whereby 'noise is produced as the cam surface 7 and cam member engage each other.
2. In a toy aeroplane comprising a body formed from a single blank having a forward extension, a sleeve sup orted by said extension and fastened within the body, a cam surface on the forward end of the sleeve, a shaft having a combined propeller and a cam rotatable therewith, said cam surface and cam intermittently enga eable whereby a noise is produced upon t e rotation of the said propeller.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST WEBER. a 8.
