' AIRPLANE DRIVE.
Application filed October 24, 1927. Serial No. 228,198.
An object of my invention is to drive an airplane by reducing the air pressure in front ofa plate secured to the fuselage.
' Another obj ectis to provide the novel drive as recited above on a plane of standard cons'truction, having the usual engine therein.
Afurther object is to drive an airplane by means of a rotor which rapidly moves the air in a radial line away from'rotor-and away from the front surface of aplate'secured to the plane.
Other objects, advantages and features of" invention .may appear in the accompanying drawings, thesubjoined detailed descriptions, and the appended claims.
. In the drawing- Fig. 1, is a side elevation of an airplane shown), and drive shaft 4, from the engine jThe circularplate 5,1is secured to the front of the fuselage 2, forwardly of the engine and the drive shaft 4, extends through said plate. I r I An impeller 6, is secured-to the shaft 4, and is positioned forwardly of the plate 5 and rotates'as closely as is practical to the front face of the plate; the impeller 6, is so formed I as to. rapidly move the air ina radial direction from the center of the impeller and this rapi'd inovement of the air causes. a reduced air pressure forwardly of the plate 5, thus causing the plane to. move due to the normal air pressure back of the plate. Ihe impeller 6, may be formed with curved arms 7, as
shown in Figure 2, or I may provide a plurality of arms 8, as shown in Figure 3, and if desired I may provide a conical deflector ,9, whichis secure to the impeller and serves to deflectthe air outwardly away from the center or inail'ect'ive part of the impeller.
It will be evident that the lift of the plane itself is affective in the same way as with the mow Well known plane, hamelyyby means of thewing or wings 3.
My invention relates merely to the method of rapidly carrying the plane forwardly in the air. While I- have shown my invention as applied to the single engine plane it will be evident that the same construction'and arrangementlcan be applied to airplanes having a plurality of eng nes.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination with an airplane including afuselage, wings and engine, a plate secured to said fuselage forwardly of the engine', and an impeller rotatable by the engine and positionedimmediately in front ofsaid plate, the outer ends of said impeller being curved away from the direction of rotatioh thereof so as to move the air outwardly in a radial direction and away from the front of;
said plate. y 2. In combinat onwith an airplane includmg a fuselage, wings and.eng1ne,a plate secured to said fuselage forwardly of the enandpositioned immediately in front of said plate, the outer ends of said impeller being curved away from the direction. of'rotation thereof so as to move the air outwardly-in. a radial direction and away fromthe front of said plate, and a comical deflector extending forwardly from said impeller andsecured thereto, said-deflector covering only the central portion of the impeller. 7
gine, and 'animpel ler rotatable by the engine In testimony whereof I alfix' my signature.
