Description

nfLRoWE.
No.1a4,431.'
NITED STATES IPnrnlwr OFFIon DANIEL lH. ROWE, OF MARTINSVILLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MILLSTONE-STAFFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 184,431, dated November 14,1876; application filed September 23, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL H. ROWE, of Martinsville, in the county of Clark, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Millstone- Stas; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a circular staff or ring, with its face turned true and applied on millstones as a guide for the straight or red staff, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. A2 a longitudinal section, of my invention.
A represents a metallic circular ring or band, having its face turned true, and forming a circular proof-staff. 'This circular stall' is placed over the burr B, and set with its turned face level with the lowest places on the face of the burr. An ordinary straight staff, D, is then applied across the face of the burr, and wherever it touches the burr the burr is to be dressed off 5 and then the straight staff is applied again, and the burr dressed off, and so on until it is in face.
The circular sta or ring A forms the guide or tester, as it is true and on the outside of the burr, and will not let the straight staff down into any low places, but will keep going over perfectly square until the burr is all true and in exact face.
At the bottom of the circular staff A are outwardly-projecting'lugs C, through which pass set-screws E, to raise and lower the sta" at will, said set-screws resting or bearing on hangers G G, which are suspended from a metal band, H, encircling the band by means of anges a at their upper ends. The circular staff, after being properly adjusted, is held solid to the burr by means of set-screws I.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The solid. circular staff or ring A, in combination with the burr B, straight staff D,and a device for adjusting and fastening the ring around the burr, for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination, with a millstone, of
the circular stai' A, with exterior projections C, the flanged hangers Gr, metal band H, adjusting-screws E, and fastening-screws I, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.'
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of August, 1876. j
DANIEL H. ROWE. Witnesses:
