L. C. DYLE Feb. 9, 1932.
WORK STAND Filed Jan. 3, 1931 Wam afyg@ Patented Feb. 9, 1932 y s'r.eras,`
armar oFFic LORETTA C. DOYLE, OF. HOOSCK FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR' TO SPECIALTY INSULA- TION MANUFACTURING CO., INC., OF HOOSICK FALLS, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION WORK STAND Application filed January k3, 1931. Serial No. 506,369.
This invention relates generally to work stands and has particular reference to'stands lznown as sewing stands for holding materials for use in sewing, such as thread,
needles, buttons, thimbles and so forth.
One object of this invention is the provision of device of the character specied which is portable and formed of material molded into shape whereby the stand is substantially a unitary structure.
Another object of this invention -is the provision of va device of the character described in which means are provided for holding needles in a concealed compartment.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a sewing stand having a handle which forms a chamber for receiving needles.
still further object of this invention is the provision of a sewing stand having a two part handle, one of which parts provides a chamber for retaining needles and the other part forms-a closure for said chamber and also a holder fer an abrasive substance.
The invention further contemplates a construction which is easy and inexpensive to manufacture and strong and durable in operation.
Gtlier objects advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2--2, Fig. 1, and 5 3 is a sectional view on the line S,
Fier. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which similar characters of reference designate similar parts in the several @s views, A designates generally the' base of the sewing stand and B indicates the handle.
rihe base A comprises a top portion 2 having a downwardly extending peripheral flange l provided at suitable intervals with enlarged portions 6 to which are secured in any suitable manner7 the pads 8; the enlarged portions forming, in elfect, internal, integral legs as will be obvious. The device is preferably molded of any suitable moldable material, such, for example as that known inthe art as Colasta but obviously may be formed of any suitable material.
rlhe base A is provided with a substantially centrally arranged projectionl 10, forming one portion of the handle B and surrounding the projection is an annular recess 12; the recess rorming a pocket for receiving buttons or other articles. The recess 12 is reallyformed in the top 2,'as will'be apparentfrom the drawings, and is provided with several upstanding hollow studsl forming supports for thimbles, and the annular rim 15 of top 2 is provided with upstanding pins 16 having shoulders 18 embedded in the material of said rim; the pins 16 being secured eoy invposition during moldingof the base, and
the under surface of said rim havingintegral bosses 17 in which the lower ends of said pins are arranged. v
As before mentioned, the handle B is in two parts, the lower part being indicated at 10. Said portion 10 has its lower end cored out to define a-v chamber 20in which is arranged a tray22, having a stem/24 which extends upwardly 'through the projection and lbeyond the latter. Secured to the upper end of the stem 24 is a knob `25. The stemV extends through a central opening 26 formed in the projection 10-and is [longitudinally movable therein to raise and lower the tray, the, latter being'adaptedto support needles which are arranged in openings 28 formedl in said projection 10. It-willbe obvious that.
when the tray is lifted the needles are brought into a position where'they may be easily removed as desired.
The handle includes portion 30 ywhichv is l removably secured to projection 10 by being threaded thereto *and said portion 30 comprises 'a cap to cover the needles inthe open-- ings 28. The portion 30, or cap, is preferably hollow and is provided with a partition 32 intermediate its top and bottom edges to define a chamberi for'holding a suitable abrasive material. In the instance shown, the portion 30 is formed of two parts, including a cover threade'dly securedto the upper end of'portion 30. In this instance,
the upper end of cap30 is reduced in thickness to define an vannular shoulder 38 which A work stand may be utilized to support a piece of material to be held in place by the cover 36 and through which needles may be passed into the abrasive material in chamber 34; the cover 36 being provided with an opening 40.
From the above description it is believed that the construction of the present invention will be fully apparent to those skilled in the art without further elaboration. The device of the present invention is a unitary structure formed of moldable material, `or to be more exact, the device is a molded construction having few parts but which possesses great utility and attractiveness. j
The drawings herein illustrate one' embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that they are for illustrative purposes only and that vvarious changes in the form' and proportions of the device may be made within the scopev of the appended claims without departingr from the spirit of the invention.
, 1What is claimed is:
Al. A work stand of the kind described comprising a base having a central projection delining a handle portion, longitudinally shiftable means in the projection for supporting needles, and a second handle portion removably secured to the projection for concealing the needles. j Y of the kind described comprising a base having a central projection deining a handle portion, longitudinally shiitable means in the projection for supporting needles, and a. second handle portion removably secured to the projection for concealing the needles, said second handle portion having a chamber formed therein for receiving an abrasive material.
3. In awork stand of the kindl described, a base comprising a top having a depending peripheral supporting flange and a central projection, an annular recess surrounding the projection and provided with upstanding studs, said projection having a hollowr lower end, a tray longitudinally movable in said lower end and having a stem extending through the projection, the projection further having longitudinal apertures therethrough for receiving needles to be supported and lifted by said tray, a cap secured to the projec- Yeo tion, and a plurality of upstanding, pins secured to the top of said base.
4. In a work stand of the kind described, a base having a projection the lower end of which is hollow to provide va tray receiving chamber, a tray supported by said projection in said chamber and longitudinally movable therein, said projection having a plurality of longitudinal openings therethrough to receive needles to be supported on said tray, a hollow cap removably secured to the projectionand a partition in said cap to deiine an abrasive receiving chamber.
5. In a work support of the kind described,
a hollow base member provided with a central projection and an annular recess therearound, said base and projection being formed as a unit ofmaterial molded to shape and having a plurality of upstanding pins secured to the base adj acent the edge thereof, a plurality of upstanding hollow article supports arranged in the recess, a needle supporting tray carried by the projection and concealed therein, a
hollow handle part removably secured to the.
upper end of the projection, a partition in said hollow handle part defining an abrasive receiving chamber, 'and a lid removably secured to the upper end of said hollow handle part.
6. In a work support of the kind described, a base having a centrally arranged projection surrounded byan annular depression, a stud extending into the depression and formed integral with the base, said projection dening one part of a handle and being provided with a bottom recess and a plurality of longitudinally arranged openings for receiving needles, a tray movable in said recess adapted to support the needles in said openings, said tray having a stem extending through and supported by said projection, and a cover secured to the upper end of said projection and forming the remainder of the handle.
7. In a work stand of the kind described, a
base having an upstanding projection pro- Vvided with needle receiving apertures, a tray supported by the projection and adapted to support needles arranged in the apertures, said tray being longitudinally shiftable in the projection, and aclosure member detachable secured tothe projection for normally concealingV the needles, the project-ion and closure member providing a handle for the work stand.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
