UNITED ST TES-PATENT OFFICE DANI L H. GHASON, F ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY ASSIGNOR TO THE SINGER MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, or ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION on NEW JERSEY" p wonxnoLnER FOR SEWING MACHINES Application filed July so,
i This invention relates to devices for holda ing tretched for the stitching operation a section of work to be darned or embroidered, Whileholding the surroundingportions of the Work securely out of the path of the sewing machine needle. r I p a The invention aims to provide I a workholder of this character with improved means for securely holding the portions of the work a vantages attained thereby will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment of the invention, taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, in which l is a perspective view of a work-holder embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the work-holder adjacent one of the I movable work-holcling fingers. Fig.3 is a section through one of the bearingsfor a work-holding finger andFig. i is a perspective view of a work-holding finger in unsprung or unstrained condition, before it is engaged with its supporting bearing.
The invention is disclosed as embodied in a work-holder constructed substantially in accordance with thedisclosure of the U. S.
patent to De Voe, No. 939,894, issuedNov.
l Thestretching frame comprises an endless band or hoop 1 of sheet metal having an ex ternal channelAQ formed by the lower continuous lip 3 'andthe series of upper spaced lips 4 intermediate which rise the arms 5 hav- Fig. 2.

tionally resist turning of the finger 8 in its bearing. Considerable wearin the bearings willnot impair the frictional operation of the fingers, as the long'connecting lengths of spring wire between the ends 7 of each finger give a considerable range of spring action betweensuch ends the bearings. Intermediate the relatively spaced lips ,3, 4i and lying within the channel 2 is arranged theusual detachable elastic band 10, such as disclosed in the De Voe Patent No. 939,894, previously referred to. c
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is: a
' 1. A work-holder comprising a ring 7 to take up any wear in shaped frame-element over which the workis H stretched, an elastic band cooperating there with in clamping the margin ofthat portion a of the-work stretched across said frame-element, and a series of independently movable spaced Work-embracing finger-elements each having a bearing engagement with 7 said frame-element, said finger-elements being each initially formed with hearing end-portions out of alinement, said end-portions being held sprung into alinement by their bearing engagement Withsaid frame-element.
2. A work-holder comprising a ring- Shaped sheet metal frame formed at intervals with upstanding tongues terminating in hearing loops, and a series of work-holding fingers journaled in said bearing loops for swinging movement, each of said fingers comprising. a wire doubled upon itself'midway of its ends and bent to hook form, the ends of each wire 7 being bent to extend toward each other and i being embraced by the bearing loop of its respective, supporting tongue, each wire being initially formed with its ends ont of alinement, said ends being held sprung into alineinent by its respective supporting bearing 1 00p. r
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
