SWIVEL SNAPS FOR HARNESS.
.No.184y033, Ememed 1ov.7,1876.
TNITED, STATES JAMES FISK, OF BRATTLEBOROUGH, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SWIVEL-SNAPS FOR HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 184,038, dated November 7, '1876; application led September 11,1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES FIsK, of Brattleborough, in the county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented an Improve- .ment in Swivel'Snaps for Harness-Gruppers,
Ste., ot which the following is a specification Snaps for necklaces and bracelets have been made as a spring--catch passing into a socket. I construct a snap somewhat similar, and adapt it to harness by providing two cylindrical bodies of nearly the saine size, one formed hollow as a socket to receive the cylindrical stud at the end ot' the other body, and into a slot of this stud and body a springcatch is inserted. The opposite or outer ends ot' the snap are 'extended to form .shanks, by which the bodies are attached to the respective parts ofthe harness. By this construction a very neat, strong, and durable snap is provided, which can be used in place ot' a buckle, and it is smooth and not liable to catch in the horseis tail, besides which it acts as a swivel, to allow the strap to which it is attached t0 draw straight should it have been snapped together in a twisted condition.
In the drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal section of the swivel-snap complete 5 and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same.
The body a is made tubular, having an inward flange, b, at one end, and a shank, c, at the other end, by means of which the body is attachedrto the strap, it being preferable to insert the shank between two thicknesses of leather, and secure it by sewing the two parts of the leather together. The body d is to be similarly secured by the shank c to the leather ot the harness, and this body d has a cylindrical stud, e, that is of a less diameter than the inward ange b, so as to pass freely into the body a, and this stud e and body d are grooved or slotted longitudinally so as to receive the latch t' and spring 0. This latch i is notched, so as to catch behind the inward ange b, and the portion which projects above the surface of the body d can be pressed upon to unlatch the snap.
It will'be seen that the body portions a and d, being nearly of equal size, and there being nothing projecting therefrom that can catch or become injured, this snap is especially available in harness at the crupper, backstrap, reins, bitching strap, 85e., where a buckle is either objectionable in appearance or liable to catch in the auimals tail.
I claim as my invention- The swivel-snap for harness made of the tubular body a, shank c, and flange b, and the body d and shank c of nearly equal size, and the spring-latch t' and stud e, as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 5th day of September, A. D. 1876.
JAMES FISK.
