Description
J. DODSON. BURGLAR-ALARM AND FIRE-ARM COMBINED. N.1a4,"o37.
Patented Nov. 7, 1876.
Wthz eaves.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH DODSON, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALARM AND FIRE-ARM COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,037, dated November 7, 1876 application filed January 24, 1876.
" To all whom it may concern Be it'known that I, JEREMIAH DODSON, of Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in apparatus for giving an alarm upon any attempt to unlock the door or efl'ect an entrance, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in the lock of a gun attached to the inside of the door and connected, through the medium of an intermediate sliding rod, with the bolt of the door-lock, in such a manner that the movement of said bolt in unlocking the door will move the sliding rod and cause it to press against the trigger ot' the gun-lock and cause the explosion of a cap or charge of powder or other explosive.
A barrel for containing the charge of powder may be connected with the gun-lock in any suitable manner, and, if desired, may be so arranged as to point in the direction from which the intruder must approach in effecting an entrance, and thus not only give an alarm by the report of the explosion, but also wound or kill said intruder.
Referring to the drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 illustrates the alarm mechanism applied to the inside of the door, and connected with the lock in such a manner as to be operated by the movement of the bolt. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the sliding rod which connects the bolt ot' the door-lock with the trigger of the alarm device.
In the several figures, A represents the alarm apparatus, mounted upon a suitable plate or block to be attached to the inside of the door. B is the door-lock, and G is the intermediate sliding rod which connects the bolt of the doorlockwith the trigger of the alarm apparatus,
and which, by being moved backward by the movement of the bolt ot' the door, is caused to press upon the trigger D. D and E are settriggers connected with the gun-lock. F is the hammer, G the nipple, and I the gun-barrel.
The barrel being loaded, a cap placed upon the nipple, the hammer cooked, the door locked, and the trigger set, any attempt at effecting an entrance by unlocking the door will move the rod 0 and cause it to press against the trigger D, thus releasing the hammer and cansing an explosion.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- In a burglar-alarm, the combination of the movable rod or bar 0 with the trigger D of an alarm and the bolt of a door-lock, whereby the movement of said bolt in unlocking the door will operate the trigger to sound the alarm, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JEREMIAH DODSON.
