UNITED STATES PATENT OEFrcE.
DANIEL H. KIME, OF KENDALLVILLE, INDIANA.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,637, dated. December 27, 1887.
Application filed November 1, 1887. Serial No. 253,972. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL H. KIME, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Kendallville, in the county of Noble and State of Indlana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement. in Burglar-Alarms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, wh ch will enable others skilled in the art to winch it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofthisspecification.
My invention relates to an improvement in burglaralarms. Its object is to provide a detonating burglar-alarm to be attached to a door or window and operated by knob attachment of door or any suitable attachment on the window; and it consists in a certain combination, construction, and arrangement of parts, which will be fully explained and illustrated in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention with the top plate removed, showing the interior and exterior mechanism. Fig. 2 is a view of same with the top plate adjusted and in position for use. Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 are detailed views of parts to be referred to hereinafter.
A designates the revolving hammer, with one end hinged upon projection b of case B, and the other end projecting outward beyond the rim of case B forms a handle by which alarm is set. This hammer is provided with a catch, a, for the engagement with the dog or lock 0. Said lock or dog 0 is hinged upon projection b of case B, and has the end 0 projecting slightly through a slot, k in the rim of case B, so that when the hammer A is thrown back the end 0 will come directly over the end d of trigger D. The trigger D is pivoted in a slot,e,of the iron or clevis E. The piece of iron or clevis E is secured in the rim of case B by means of a screw-thread upon one end. In one end of trigger D is an eye, d, through which one end of the trigger-wire F is passed and secured. The other end of the wire F is attached to an eye in a band or ring, G, which is rigidly attached to the shaft of doorknob M.
H represents the mainspring, which maybe of any suitable construction, as shown in the drawings or otherwise. Said mainspring is held firmlyin position by means of projection or screw b", the case B, and the lower end of hammer A.
I is the spring, which fits upon projection 11, and it is so arranged as to force the end of dog or lock 0 into the catch a when the ham- L is the cover of case B, and is secured thereon by means of screw h. The rim of case Bis provided with an opening or slot, 11*, in which the upper end or handle portion of the hammerA works.
The operation of my device is as follows: "When the hammer Ais pulled back by means of handle, the spring I forces one end of dog or lock 0 into the catch a, and the other end, 0, assumes a position directly over the end d of trigger D. If the door-knob is then turned either way,the trigger D, by means of wire F, is forced upon the end 0 of dog or lock 0. This releases the engagement of dog Gand hammer A at the catch a. The hammer A is then driven forward with great force by means of mainspring H striking the cartridge, causing it to explode. The concussion of the cartridge forces the bolt K forward and locks the door securely. Alarm is used with or without bolt.
The general utility and practicableness of my device being apparent, it is useless to further enlarge upon its merits.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj 1. An improvement in burglar-alarms consisting of the following combination: the r0- tary hammer A, hinged upon projection b,provided with the catch a, the case B, provided with projections b, b, and b and the openings or slots b and 11* on the rim of case B, the dog 0, hinged upon projection b, the trigger D, pivoted in slot e of iron or clevis E, the trig- ICO ger-wire F, with one end attached to an eye, (1, in trigger D, the other end attached to ring G upon the shaft of door-knob,the mainspring H, located in case B, the spring I upon pro- 5 jection b, the cartridge chamber J, secured to rim of case B, the cover or top L of case B, and the bolt K, placed in front of cartridge-chamber J, all substantially as described and shown.
2. The combination of the rotary hammer A, hinged upon projection b,said hammer having the catch a,the case B, provided with projections b, b, and I), and the openings or slots 17 and If on the rim of case B,the dog O,hinged upon projection b, the trigger D, pivoted in slot 0 of iron or clevis E, the trigger-wire F, with one end attached to an eye, d, in trigger D, the other end secured to ring G upon shaft of door-knob,the mainspring H,located in case 20 B, the spring I upon projection b, the cartridge-chamber J, screwed in the rim of case B, and the cover or top L, all substantially as described and shown.
3. The combination of the rotary hammer A, hinged upon projection 12, said hammer having the catch a, the case B, provided with projections b, b, and b, and the openings or slots 12 b, the dog O,hingedupon projection 12, the trigger D, pivoted in slot 6 of iron or clevis E, the trigger-wire F, with one end secured to an eye, d, in trigger D, the mainspring H, located in case B, the spring I upon projection b, the cartridge-chamber J, screwed in the rim of case B, and the cover L, all substantially as described and set forth. 3 5
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL H. KIME.
