IMPROVEMENT IN ALARM-LOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,541, dated October 31, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES SGHNEPF, of Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Burglar- Alarm Door-Lock and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of the lock, the cover being removed 5 Fig. 2, the bell; Fig. 3, an end view of the lock, showing the relative positions of the keys and knobs or handles. Fig. 4 is a view, in detail, of the top sliding bar. Fig. 5 is a view, in detail, of the central sliding bar. Fig.6, the bolt; and Fig. 7 is a view in detail of one of the vertical locking-bars.

The nature of my invention consists in the combination of the top and central sliding bars, the upright locking-bars, and alarm-bell, when operated by two different keys.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation as follows:

A represents the frame of the lock, that is made of cast metal, having its recess to correspond with the shape of the several parts and devices of the look, so that the lock is a substantial and strong one, and so compact and simple as to wear well, and not easily put out of order. B represents the bolt with its square recesses C O O and its connectingnn D, that fits into an aperture at one end of the oval plate E, that is attached to the spindle F, and moves the bolt backward and forward as the knob G is turned. The lower ends of the vertical locking-bars H H fit into the recesses O O of the bolt B, and the top bar J and central bar K fit into the notches or channels L of the vertical locking-bars H H. The bolt B has a spiral spring, M, in its rear, so as to keep the bolt to its proper place when it is being locked or unlocked. The cross-bar J has, likewise, a spiral spring, M, at each end at its upper side to keep the bar in its place. The central bar K has, likewise, a spiral spring, M, at one end to keep the bar in its proper position. N is the hooklever, that connects the lock with the bell and is operated by one of the keys. The bell is an ordinary alarm-bell with a spring and hammer attached. The lock may be placed on the front door and the hell be fastened near a bedside on the third or fourth story of a house, and connected by a wire to the hook N of the lock, and thus the alarm be given in the upper part of the house. P is the hooked lever, pivoted to the lockcase, and engages with the pin R of the bar J when desired to hold up said bar. S S are projecting pins or wards, secured to the lock-frame to prevent any but the proper key from operating the bar J.

To operate and open the lock, I first insert and use the lower key T, which I turn half around, and which draws back the lever N and rings the alarm-bell, then turning it further until it comes in contact with the end V of the bar K, which presses back the bar; then, with the upper key W, I raise the upper bar J, which, at the same time, raises the locking-bars H and disengages them from the recesses O O of the bolt B. The bolt 13 can then be worked freely by the handle Gr on the spindle F. I then move the hook of the lever B under the pin R, by which means the bars J K and H are then held in their places, and the bolt B is free to be used as a door latch. There being no communication from the keyholes to other parts of the lock, powder cannot be inserted in a sufficient quantity to affect the bars J, K, and H, so that the lock cannot be bursted open by an explosion.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The construction and combination of the top bar J, central sliding bar K, the upright lockingbars H, bolt B, the lever N, and spiral springs M M M M, with the alarm-bell, when operated by two keys in the manner herein described, for the purposes set forth.
