This invention relates to improvements in garters, and more particularly to that type having an element surrounding the limb and carrying a stocking support device.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a garter having the usual adjusting strap of elastic material, one end carrying a pad and the other a hook engageable in an opening in the pad so disposed that the stocking support may turn freely at an angle to conform to either leg.

A further feature is in the provision of a garter in which the metal portions are so arranged as to avoid contact with the limb on which they are applied.

Another aim is to provide a garter of pleasing appearance, which can be cheaply constructed and worn with entire comfort.

These several advantageous objects are attained by the novel design, construction and combination of parts, hereinafter fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which:

The garter consists, as usual, of a strap or band 10, preferably made of an elastic tape of suitable dimensions for its purpose.

One end of the strap is sewn between the inner and outer portions, respectivelylland 12, of a fabric pad, preferably hexagonal in profile and stitched around its marginal edges, as at 13, these' stitches confining the end of the strap, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Midway between the inner and outer layers of the pad is a thin metallic re-enforcement plate 14, while disposed on the outer layer 12 is a metallic disc 15 having a raised portion 16, offset above the center of the pad and provided with a circular opening 17. This plate 50 is rotatably secured to the pad surface 12 by abeaded ring 18 having a plurality of prongs 19- on its outer marginal edge, these prongs passing through the outer layer 12, and also the thin metallic intermediate plate 14, to be bent thereunder, positively connecting the ring, but in such manner that the disc 15may rotate under the inturned beading of the ring 18.

In thelower portion of the disc 15 the meta-l is sheared, as at 20, to produce an upstandingrib 21, around which is disposed the bightl of a loop of tape 22 forming part of a common typel of stocking support.

Fromthe foregoing it will be obvious that when a pull onthe stocking support is exerted 65. the disc 15 will befcaused to rotate at an angle in correspondence with the direction of strain exerted on the support. The opposite end of the flexible tape or band 10 is connect-ed with a loop-23, formed from sheet metal, and having .an extended hook 24 turned upwardly as at 25, this hook being adapted to pass throughl the' opening 17 and engage within the raised element 16, which, as has been seen, is pivotally mounted'. 75-

. After passing through the loop 23, the end of the strap 10is connected with an adjusting buckle-26 arranged to slide over the tape for such length adjustment as may be desired. 80

The modification shown in Fig. et, is in all respect-ssimilar to that shown in the other figuresexcepting that the pad 12a is here shown circular in contour and the disc 15 is flat-and'v provided' with a stud 28 for engage- 85 ment with the bight 29 of the loop 23a.l

Obviously, any form of fastening means may be utilized for separably connecting the free end of the flexible tape to the rotatable disc 15; and likewise any form of hose supporting means 22 may be attached to the rib 21.

From the foregoing it will be seen that, due to the pivotal effect of the member 15, the garter is self adjusting'to an unusual degree, 95 and adapted to fit either the right or left leg and also affording a full measure of comfort, while the hook element 25 is not readily disengageable, as by accidental causes, from within the keeper 16. f

The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be 5 constructed including many modifications Vwithout departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended. claims. p y

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. A garter comprising a pad composed of two fabric layers having a metal re-enforce ment therebetween, a metal disc having` a raised integral bar on one portion and a raised circular keeper opposite thereto said keeper having a central opening, a strap fixed between the pad layers to extend fro-na the edge thereof, a hook adjustably engaged on the free end of said strap to enter the opening in said keeper, and means to secure said disc to said pad whereby it may freely rotate.

2. A garter comprising a strap, a pad attached to one end of said strap, a circular plate on the outer surface of said pad, said plate having a raised oiqfset portion containing an aperture, a reinforcement on the inner surface of said pad, a ring having an inreaching beaded edge overlying the margin of said plate, prongs on said ring to engage said re-enlforcernent, means integral with said plate for attaching a hose supported, and a re-entrantly turnedhook on the free end of said strap to enter the aperture lin the offset portion ofvsaid plate. A garter comprising apad., a rnetal disc having means oifset from the center to carry a hose supporting device and a raised',y keeper 40 portion opposite said means, said keeper portion having a central perforation, a ring fixed in said pad to rotatably secure said disc, a strap embedded at one end in said pad, and a hook at the other end of the strap to engagey below the raised portion of said disc through the mentioned perforation.
