INVENTOR Bert F Callencler B) Q/- 5. ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 5, 1932 friiirnn STAT S PATENT JFFICE Y I BERTIE. CALLENDEER, or WIGHI'IA, KANSAS con'mmnnron MATCHES AND FRAGMENTS THEREOF- Application filed. June as,
invention relates to a container for matches. and fragmentsthereof.' v I The object of my 1nvent1on is to provlde a a container that will receive a match box in one compartmentand fragmentof matches inanotjher, compartment. i g c A further ob ect of my lnventlon is to provide a container havlng .two compartments, one as a storage for, matches and having a lid, the other compartment'asa storage for ignited matches and having a slotted'lid that is funneled through which the fragments willpass and the lids for each compartment to close by gravity.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a spacing means in the container to separate the match box from the compartment.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a container, inexpensive to construct and the same to be pendently supported and will seat on a shelf or the like.
These and other objects will be hereinafter more fully explained reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like characters apply to like parts in the different views.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the container.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a plan view, parts removed for convenience of illustration.
Fig. 4: is a vertical section through the container.
My invention herein set forth consists of an L-shaped housing having a compartment 1 adapted to receive a match box 2 loosely "f1 engaging therein so that the same may be removed when empty and replaced with a full box of matches. Thesaid compartment is equipped with a lid 3 pivotally connected at its inner corners by a stud 4 trunnion in aperture respectively. The pivot point of the said lid being in close proximity to the upper front wall 5 of the vertical compartment hereinafter described and stopped by detents 4 as means to insure the closing of the lid by gravity, when it is open to obtain matches that are stored there beneath, note 1930. Serial no. 463,117.
that the lid has a liberal projection over the side walls as shown at A in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, by which means the lid is easily raised by contacting the same with thefingers at the front and end portions.
In Figs. 3 and 4: is shown a pair of corrugations 6, the lower extremity of which protrude toward the match box, while the upper end thereof diminishes on the partition Wall E, by which meansthe said match box is spaced from the partition wall and beingso arranged that excess heat created within the adjacent compartment will be insulated from the matches contained in the box, should the same be placed with their i'gnitable heads thereto.
-Vertically and rearwardly positioned to the match box storage compartment is a second compartment 7 functioning as a receptor forignited or burnt matches, the upper end Llli of the last said compartment has a lid 8 hingedly arranged and adapted to swing as shown by dotted lines C, the said lidbeing pivoted by ,a stud 9 at each of the rear corners thereof, and the said lid concentrically funneled as at 10, the said lid will close by gravity when opened at its full extremity.
At the frustum of the said funneled por- 7 tion is an elongated slot l1,by which means should a match or fragmentary portion v thereofbe thrown on the lid it will readily pass throughthe slotinto the compartment as a storage means therefor. It will beunderstood that the said slot is of suflicient size, to allow a standard make of match to pass through freely and should the match be burning it will be smothered out after its deposit in the compartment as the walls of said compartment are solid and the slotted opening is not sufiicient in size to afford ample air for combustion, otherwise the said lid will close the upper end of the compartment snugly by the ends thereof fitting closely to the side wall that extends upward as at D,
and the front portion has a lip 12 extending downward as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4.
Upwardly extending from the compartment 7, is the portion of the back as shown at E, the contour of which is merely for ornamentation and the design thereof may be varied. Near each end of the extended portion is an aperture having a slot radially extending upward therefrom. The said aperture functioning as an entrance for the head of a nail or tack and when the container is dropped downward the neck portion of the said nail or tack will engage in their respective slots, by which means disengagement thereof will be impossible without raising the container.
One important feature of'the lid?) is that i when the said lid is raised and a match withto such, as the container may be varied in width to receive matches independent of the box, or other forms may be adhered to and such other modifications may be madeas lie within the scope of the appendedclaims.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatentis:1-- f i 1; In a container for matches and fragments thereof, a container having a compartment to receive a box'o'f matches and 'a lid hingedly connected 'as closing"means there for, a plurality of corrugations on the-backfof the container and protruding inward and diverging downward as means to space a match box from the back thereof a compart ment extending upward and rearwardly positioned to the first said compartment as storage means for ignited matches; a lid hingedly arranged to close the upper end of the last said compartment, the lid having a lip turned downward at the outer edgeth'ereof, and being funneled concentrically, the frustum endof the funnel being slotted for the purpose specified. I
2. In a container for matches and fragments thereof, a container of'the class'described, comprising an elongated vertically positioned compartment with a funneled and slotted lid hingedly engaging on the upper end thereof,'and a compartment outwardly extending and adjacent to the lower end box storage compartment, the top of the last said compartment positioned below the top of the first said compartment, a pair of corrugations protruding into the second said compartment and converging upward, and as a spacing means for a match box from the partition, a straight lid for the second said compartment and a funneled and slotted lid for the first said compartment, by which means match fragments are guided into the first said compartment, all as and for the purpose specified.
54. in a. container for" matches and fragments thereof, a container having a compartment to receive a box of matches and a lid hingedly connected as closing means therefor, means to space a match 1101; from the back of the container; a compartment extendingnpward' and rearwardly positioned to the first said compartment as storage means for ignited matches"; a lid 'hingedl'y arranged to closethe upper end of the last said" compartment, the lid having a lip turned downward at the outer edge thereof, and being funneled concentrically, the frustinn end of the funnel being slotted ,for the purpose specified,
In testimony whereof I a'fiix my signature.

thereof andbeing divided 'therefrom by a partition the, last said compartment having alid hingedly connected and adjacent to the first said compartment; a pair of corrugationsprotruding into the second said. compartment and slantingly positioned, sjubstan tially as shown and-for the purpose specified.
3. In a containerjfo'r matches and frag I ments thereof, a container of the class described, the combinationof, a fragmentary '7 match storage compartment, and a match
