' 1 This invention relates to pads or tablets and has for its general object to provide articles of this character with devices whereby lines may be readily ruled thereupon, both longitudinally and transversely thereof, and at varying distances apart and from the margins of the leaves of which such pads or tablets are composed.

A further object of the invention is to provide such pads or tablets with devices of the character described which are so associated with the pads or tablets asto enable them to be used conveniently in connection with the same, even though the thickness of the pads or tablets is varied by tearing or removing used sheets therefrom.

Further and .more limited objects of the invention will appear hereinafter'and will be realized by the construction and arrangement of parts shown in the drawings hereof,wherein Fig. 1 represents a plan view of a tablet having my invention applied thereto, the ordinary cover being thrown back;

Describing the various parts by reference characters A represents the body of the tablet or pad, said body consisting of the usual leaves arranged in a stack and bound together at the upper end by a binding B such as is ordinarily employed,theleaves 4 being provided with transverse severing lines, indicated at A, whereby, when and as used, the leaves may be torn off parallel with the top,leaving the stub A The pad or tablet is provided with the usual back cover, indicated at C,-and the usual front andhas its upper end inserted beneath the 7 the top of such stack, the part of the ruler cover, indicated at D. The pad thus far described is of a type which is in general use.

For the purpose of enabling lines to be conveniently ruled upon the leaves of the pad or tablet at varying distances fromthe side margins thereof, a longitudinal-line ruler is employed, the same being indicated generally at E and being preferably formed of a sheet of heavy paper, such as cardboard, having parallel slots E therethrough, the slotsextending longitudinally of the pad and parallel to the side edges thereofL These slotsmay be spaced apart at any desired interval, for instance onehalf inch, the slots adjacent to the side edges being arranged at an inch from each edge. This distance may, of course, bevariedas desired; and the top of the ruler E may be 7 provided witha scale by which the distance of the outside lines from the margin of the ruler and the distance between the lines themselves may be indicated. The ruler E is preferably formed as part of the pad corresponding end of the cover D and is preferably bound into the pad, together with thevupperen'd of the cover D, by means of the binding B.

The scores or lines may be formed by perforating such part of the ruler or theyv may be formed by heavily creasing such portion of the ruler along such lines, as indicated atF in Fig. 6. The flexible section E thus provided enables the longitudinal-line ruler to be folded down over the stub left by tearing ofi the successive top-sheets of a the pad ortablet and enables such ruler to rest flat upon the top sheet of the remaining part of the pad or tablet. It is also of sufiicient extent to enable the said ruler to be folded over and beneath the pad, if desired.

For the purpose of ruling lines transversely of the sheets of the pad or tablet, I'have provided a transverse-line ruler, which is indicated generally at F and which is shown as flexibly connected to the lower end of the back cover G, by means of a strip of flexible or pliable material forming a joint said joint being of suliicient width to enable the ruler to be foldedover upon the topof ly extending parallel folding lines F, such lines being conveniently formedby slotting the sheet nearly through. They may also be formed by crimping or creasing the sheet of which the ruler is composed in the manner shown at F in Fig. 6. The folding lines F will be arranged at any desired or convenient distance apart, say one-half inch; and the body may also be provided with lines extending longitudinally thereof (parallel with the.

Furthermore, the upper edge of the ruler F may be provided with a scale thereby providing a heavy paper ruler which may be torn off along the line of thenext adjacent line orcrease F when, the pad is exhausted. When operating a pad having my line-ruling attachments or devices applied thereto, either the transverse-line ruler or the longitudinal-line ruler may be used first; or either may be used upon any particular leaf without necessarily using the other. Assuming that a sheet is to be provided with both longitudinal and transverse lines and that the parts are in the positions shown in Figs. 1', 2 and 5, the longitudinal line or lines will be drawn by inserting the point of the pencil into and moving the same along the appropriate slot or slots E. 'The ruler E will then be folded back in the position shown in Fig. 4, and the transverse-line ruler will be withdrawn from beneath the stack of leaves and folded over on top of the same, as indicated in Figs. 3 and L. The manner of constructing the ruler F enables it to be folded upon a-ny one of the lines F, the upper edge of the ruler, when so folded, providing a straight edge F The arrangement of the folds enables transverse lines to be ruled upon the pad at any desired distance from the top thereof. ;VVhen the transverse ruler is provided with a scale of the character referred to hereinbefore, the

If desired, the special cover D may be omitted and the horizontal-line ruler E may be employed as a cover.

By equipping a pad or tablet with lineruling devices such as disclosed herein, the ruling of the sheets of such pads or tablets for various kinds of work may be effected quickly, conveniently, and accurately by scholars and others and without unduly increasing the cost of production of the pads or tablets.

lVhile. the ruling .device shown and described herein is particularly adapted for enabling lines to be ruled longitudinally'and transversely of the pads or tablets, it will be evident that the particular direction or inclination of the lines to be ruled may be varied without avoiding the spirit of my invention.

The combination, with a pad or tablet' comprising a stack of leaves, of a line-ruler comprising a sheet having one end secured to the upper end of said pad or tablet and provided with a plurality of line-ruling slots, the said line-ruler having transversely extending flexing lines constituting a hinged portion of suflicient extent to enable it to conform to and extend over the stub formed by severing successive top leaves of the said pad and enabling the ruler to rest flatwise on top of the part of the pad or tablet remaining. The combination, with a pad or tablet comprising a stack of leaves each having a severing line adjacent one end thereof, the ends of the leaves beyond such severing lines constituting a stub, a binder for the stub end I of said pad or tablet, and a line-ruler comprising a sheet having one end secured to and above the stub endsof the said leaves by the said binder and provided with lineruling slots, the said line-ruling attachment having transversely extending flexing lines constituting a flexible or hinged portion adapted to conform to and extend over the stub formed by severing successive top leaves of the said pad and enabling the line-ruler to rest flatwise on top of the part of the pad or tablet remaining.

7. The combination, with a pad or tablet comprising a stack of leaves, of a line ruler provided with a plurality of line-ruling slots, and a flexible connection between the said line ruler and the upper end of said pad or tablet, the said flexible connection being of sufficient width to enable the line ruler to lie flatwise on top of the pad at any time, the flexible connection conforming to and accommodating the stub formed by tearing off successive top leaves of the pad or tablet.

8. The combination, with a pad or tablet comprising a stack of leaves, of a line ruler provided with a plurality of line-ruling slots, and a flexible connection between the said line ruler and the upper end of said pad or tablet, the said flexible connection being of suflicient width to enable the line ruler to lie flatwise on top of the pad at any time, the flexible connection conforming to and accommodating the stub formed by tearing off successive top leaves of the pad or tablet and being of sufficient length to permit the said line ruler to be folded over the top and beneath the said pad or tablet.

.9. The combination, with a plurality of assembled leaves, of a line-ruler having one of its edges attached at an edge of such assembly and foldable into and out of engagement with successive leaves thereof, the said line ruler being provided with a plurality of line-ruling slots. a

10. The combination, with a plurality of detachably assembled leaves, of a line-ruler comprising a sheet provided with a plurality of line-ruling slots and having one of its edges attached at an edge of such assembly and foldable into and out of engagement with successive leaves thereof, the attaching edge of said ruler having a flexible portion of sufficient extent to enable the ruler to lie fiat upon the surfaces of successive leaves of such assembly notwithstanding variations in the thickness of such assembly.
