Description
DC. 29, 1931. v MARSH 1,838,230
SWINGING SIGN Filed March 21, 1929 Patented Dec. 29, 1931 UNITED STATES HARRY V. MARSH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS SWINGING SIGN Application filed March 21, 1929. Serial No. 348,772.
The present invention relates to a suspended placard, generally of sheet material, and
possessing vertical planes at right angles to one another.
Such a device in the present instance comprises two blanks, one the main blank, and the other a secondary blank which is adapted to be disposed at right angles to said first blank.
The purpose of the invention is to'provide a novel hanging sign having a plurality of wings, i. e., four, which attract attention from all angles. Such a suspended sign is adapted to pick up a current of air coming from any direction whereby there is imparted thereto a movement which rotates the sign upon a string or other pivoting flexible support.
Included in the objects of the invention are a novel device of the character described, an
unique arrangement of tongues and slots for the joining of the two blanks one to the other, and an unique provision of interlocking members whereby the two blanks will be maintained in their proper assembled relation.
These objects, and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, are obtained by the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements which constitute the single form of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank from which the major member is formed;
Figure 2 is a plan view of a blank for the minor member which is adapted to be inserted into and transversely of the major member; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the assembled device, various tabs and locking mem- 4 bers not normally visible in such view being shown in dotted lines.
Like reference characters are used to designate similar parts in the drawings and in the description of the invention which will now be given.
In Figure 1, there is a body member 10 which has an upper section over which the principal advertising subjects are adapted to be spread. Usually such printing is the same onboth sides of the device. This is not a limitation to the invention for the advertising subjects may be different without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Through the top of the device is a perforation or aperture 11 in which a string 12 shown in Figure 3 is adapted to be inserted and secured, such string 12 being adapted to be attached'at its free end to a permanent hook, nail or other object whereby to permit of the sign being suspended in mid air with out any portion thereof impinging any obect.
The bottom of the body member 10, by a vertically extending slot 13, is divided into wings 14 and 15, and beneath the slot 13 is a "a transverse section 16 of the material in the form of an extension. Such transverse section 16 is also adapted to carry advertising, as well as are each of the wings 14 and 15.
The slot 13 comprises a removed portion of "7 the material of the placard and has at its upper end a narrow vertical slit 17, and at its lower end, a narrow vertical slit 18 terminating in a transverse slit 19.-
Reference should now be had to Figure 2. In the blank there shown, there are two wings 25 and 26, each wing being adapted to carry advertising material. The advertising material should not be continuous across the two wings 25 and 26 but should be complete so on each wing as this blank is adapted to be divided into the wings 25 and 26 by its insertion into and through the slot 13 of the major placard blank.
On the upper edge of'wings 25 and 26, are 5 tabs 27 and 28. These are triangular portions separated by a slit 29.
At the bottom of the minor blank, there is an extension from the wings 25 and 26 comprising a main tongue 30 which terminates in a shoulder 31 dividing it from a minor tongue 32 which minor tongue comprises substantially a square, integral with the part 30. The edge of shoulder 31 is substantially parallel with the slit 29.
The minor member, like the major member, is adapted to be printed upon both sides, and when inserted into the main member, provides therewith eight panels of advertising, two on each side of each wing, one or more 106 minor member in correct assembled relation at the top of said minor member.
In the further assembly of the device, and anterior to or concurrently wit-h the inter locking of the two blanks at the top otthe minor member, the tongue 32 comes in contact with the extension 16 of the device. Thereupon the integral tab 30 and 32 is turned outwardly "to a right angle, so that the rectangular section 32 thereof passes I go through the slit 19. The slit 18 closely impinges the bottom portion of the'material be tween the Wings and 26.
Such insertion of the tab 32 terminates when the shoulder 31-impinges the material 6 5 of member 15, the shoulder being beyond the linear extent of slit 19. When this impingment occurs, the member comprising the wings 25 and 26 is firmly locked by said shoul- V der 31 at 'right angles to the main member,
7 3 and in such assembled relation an accidental dislocation of the two blanks is practically impossible. V
W hen so assembled and suspended from the string 12, the device is adapted to'be rotated by a breeze which happens to strike it. The
adapted to respond to any suitable air current.
When desired, the member 27 may be elim- Y inated, without departing from the spirit of V the invention, this omission merely facilitatblanks, one having a string for suspension and receiving the second blank transversely thereof, there being a main slit in one blank to receive the other blank, said main slit having extensions, and said second blank having extensions interlocking with said slit extensions.
5. A placard for suspension comprising a main blank having a main slit terminating in minor slit extensions, and a minor blank insertable through said main slit and having extensions of material engaging the extensions-oi said slit.
6. The placard described in claim 5 and in which an extension of the material of said minor blank is articulated for engagement with an extension from said main slit.

ing assembly, but providing a more loosely or associated assembly.
7 I claim:
1. A suspended placard comprising two blanks, one having a string for suspension and receiving the second blank transversely thereof, there being a slit in one blank to admit the second blank, said second blank having a tongue interlocking with said slit.
2. A suspended placard comprising two blanks, one having a string for suspension and receiving the second blank transversely thereof, there being a slit in one blank having v a transverse extension, said second blankhav- G tical plane, one having a string for suspension and a slot for receiving the second blank transversely thereoflthere being a slit in one .ofsaid blanks, and extensions upon said second blank to be inserted 'into said slit. 1. A suspended placard comprising two
