Description

Nov. 2, 1965 o. WINKLER ETAL 3,214,855
BLANK, PREFERABLY MADE OF CARDBOARD FOR THE MAKE-UP OF FRAMED PICTURES OR POSTERS Filed Dec. 28, 1962 IN VENTORS OTTO W/NKLER PETE/P HEPWEG.
21 ATTORN United States Patent M 3,214,855 BLANK, PREFERABLY MADE OF CARDBOARD FOR THE MAKE-UP 0F FRAMED PICTURES 0R POSTERS Otto Winlder, Cologne-Flittard, and Peter Herweg, Monheim, Germany, assignors to Agfa Aktiengesellschaft, Leverkusen, Germany, a corporation of Germany Filed Dec. 28, 1962, Ser. No. 247,919 Claims priority, application Germany, Jan. 13, 1962, A 17,751 2 Claims. (Cl. 46154) The improvement relates to a blank, preferably made of cardboard, for the make-up of framed pictures or posters. With the known blanks of this type, it was hitherto very difficult to bend the picture edges to an exact frame and to produce the frame so that it was clean and firm at the corners of the picture. The blanks have been provided with complicated side portions and flaps, which can only be connected to one another by particularly skilled persons to form a clean rigid frame.
The new blank, with which these disadvantages are obviated, consists of a central area which is preferably rectangular and which is to be printed on the front, said area having extension pieces which adjoin the area edges and which are provided with scored fold lines extending parallel to the area edges, the extension pieces being adapted to be bent about said lines to form square sleeves, which are each fixed to the back of the central area, at one side thereof, advantageously by adhesives. For aligning the frame at its corners, two extension pieces of the central area which face one another are offset inwardly, preferably at the second scored fold line, and tapered towards the outer wall disposed parallel to the said lines, and the other two oppositely disposed extension pieces are each provided with two transverse slots which are disposed so far from the edge of the extension pieces that the tapered portions of the first-mentioned two extension pieces engage in the transverse slots of the other extension pieces when all extension pieces are bent to form square sleeves and are stuck with one side to the back of the central area.
The fastening at the corners of those square sleeves which form the frame is achieved by tongues stamped in the blank from two oppositely disposed extension pieces. Preferably in the area between the second and third score lines form the central portion, which tongues are adapted to be pressed into correspondingly stamped-out rectangular openings of the two other oppositely disposed extension pieces, when all extension pieces are bent into square sleeves and are stuck with one side to the back of the central area.
One embodiment of the blank is shown by Way of example in the drawing. FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the front of the blank and FIGURE 2 is a crosssection through the finally framed picture assembly. The central area 1 of the blank is printed, for example, with a coloured advertising picture. The extension pieces or flaps 2, 3, 4 and 5 adjoining the margin of this area are bent about the edges 6, 7, 8 and 9 of the area 1 towards the back of the area 2 and then are so bent, each time by a right-angle, about the scored crease lines 1021 formed thereon that they form square sleeves (see FIGURE 2). Consequently, square sleeves are formed on all four sides of the area, these sleeves being stuck with their sides 22, 23, 24 and 25 (i.e., the edges of the flaps of the blank) on the 3,214,855 Patented Novrz, 1965 back 26 of the area 1. These square sleeves together produce the frame of the picture which is printed on the central area. The two opposite extension pieces 2 and 4 of the blank (FIGURE 1) are offset inwardly at the lines 15 and 17 and tapered so that the sloping edges 27, 28, 29 and 39 are formed, which can be inserted into the transverse slots 31, 32, 33 and 34 of the two other oppositely disposed extension pieces 3 and 5, when all extension pieces have been bent to square sleeves and the sleeves are set up to form a frame.
The tongues 35, 36, 37 and 38 are stamped into the extension pieces 2 and 4 in the areas between the fold score lines 11 and 15, and 13 and 17, respectively, and rectangular openings 39, 40, 41 and 42 corresponding to the tongues are produced by stamping out in the areas between the scored fold lines 11 and 14, and 12 and 16, respectively. With the square sleeves set up to form a frame, the sloping edges 27-3G can be caused to engage in the slots 31-34, so that the tongues 35-38 are positioned exactly above the rectangular stamped openings 3942. By pressing the tongues into the stamped openings, the erected frame sections consisting of the four square sleeves are firmly united to one another at their ends. These connections thus give stable corner connections for the entire frame. The references 43 and 44 designate eyes to which can be fixed a cord for hanging up the framed picture.
Since the parts for erecting and fixing the corners of the frame after bending the extension pieces to form square sleeves and after sticking the latter to the back of the picture area, as finished frame sections, already coincide at thecorrect position, any unskilled person can easily put the frame together. The finished picture with the solid block frame shows a slight curvature of the picture surface, which produces the full effect of the colours of the print.
We claim:
1. A blank for framed pictures and poster makeup having a substantially rectangular central area, a first pair of oppositely disposed extensions integral with said central area, a second pair of oppositely disposed extensions integral with said central area, a fold line defining the boundary between each extension and said central area, a plurality of fold lines on each of said extensions to facilitate its bending, said fold lines being parallel to the fold line which defines said boundary of its extension with said central area, said fold lines defining a first, a second, a third, and a fourth fold zone extending respectively from said central area, each of said first pair of extensions having a pair of apertures in its second fold zone adjacent its edges thereof, each of said first pair of extensions having a pair of elongated slots adjacent said apertures and extending across its third fold zone into its second fold zone, said third zone of each of said second pair of extensions being offset and having inwardly tapering sides, a pair of tongues in the second fold zone of each of said second pair of extensions adjacent its edges thereof, said inwardly tapering sides being disposed to be inserted into said elongated slots of said first pair of extensions when said extensions are bent at their fold lines, and said tongues being disposed to be inserted into said apertures when said extensions are bent at their fold lines.
2. A blank as set forth in claim 1 wherein fastening means are provided on the second fold zone of one of said pairs of oppositely disposed extensions whereby said blank is adapted to be hung with said extensions folded on one side of said central area With the other side of 2,332,642 10/43 Johnson 40l24.1 X
