Abstract
A laminate sheet material base blank defining fold lines for assembly into an article comprises taking a baseboard such as a corrugated board or display board and adhering an image receptive media such as canvas, paper, photo paper, art paper or silk to form a laminate and forming cut lines and / or crease lines in the laminate to form a blank. A mount or frame formed from folded sheet material comprises a display panel and wall members, the wall members being formed from a series of panels hingedly connected together to the periphery of the display panel so as to form a box section, the frame being secured in its assembled form by an arrangement of tabs and slots defined at least in part by inner side walls of the wall members. As an alternative to painting, an image may be printed onto the blank by passing the blank though a printer. Suitable printers are those which receive sheet stock thicknesses of 0.75mm and above. The need to send a painted canvas for example to a specialist for mounting is avoided.
Description
1 2457005 A Method of Forming a Blank of Laminate Sheet Material The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a blank of sheet laminate material defining fold or crease lines suitable for erecting into an article such as a mount or frame, container, toy or so forth and resulting article. In another aspect, the invention relates to an improved design of a mount or frame.
Canvas art is typically displayed by mounting onto a frame. The canvas is typically stretched over a wooden frame or stretcher frame and held taut thereon by fastening means such as staples.
More recently cardboard mounts have been introduced as an alternative to wooden frames. These mounts are formed from a folded blank having a facia panel over which the canvas is stretched and which provides support to the mount structure. Commonly the canvases are held taut to the mount using adhesive.
Adhering the canvas onto the mount is usually performed by hand using tools specific to the job. Skill is required to ensure that the canvas is perfectly stretched over the mount without creasing or leaving areas of slack. This process becomes increasingly difficult with larger canvas sizes where multiple copies of an image are desired to be moulded. It is necessary to mount each print individually. The process is time consuming and consequently the rate of manufacture is low.
Because of the tools and skills needed to mount successfully, it is typical for an individual such as an artist who has already painted or printed an image onto canvas to dispatch the canvas to a specialist for mounting.
The present invention enables an individual to create a mounted canvas effect without the need to stretch the canvas over the frame.
There is provided a method of forming a laminate sheet material blank defining fold lines for assembly into an article comprising the steps of: taking a baseboard and adhering an image receptive media thereon to form a laminate; and forming cut lines and/or crease lines in the laminate to form a blank.
Adhering the media to the article whilst still in a flat form obviates the complicated process of stretching the media over an erected frame. This enables an individual, in possession of a laminate sheet blank, to paint onto the media e.g. canvas, and then assemble the blank into the frame without the need to send the canvas to a specialist mounter.
Additionally, because the blank is flat it is possible to run the media and frame through a printer. This enables mass production of identical prints.
The invention is also is directed an improved mount and so according to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a mount formed from folded sheet material, the frame having a display panel and wall members, the wall members each formed from a series of panels hingedly connected to the periphery of the display panel so as to form a box section; the frame being secured in its assembled form by an arrangement of tabs and slots defined at least in part by inner side panels of the wall members.
As such the back of the mount is flat allowing a backing panel to be attached flush thereon.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the following figures in which: Figure 1 illustrates schematically a method of manufacturing a laminated sheet material blank for erecting into a mounting frame for a canvas artwork; Figure 2 illustrates a blank for forming an improved mounting frame for displaying artwork; and Figure 3 illustrates the step required to assembly the blank of Figure 2 into a mount.
There is provided a baseboard 100 formed from a sheet of corrugated or display board or other material having sufficient resilience to be engineered, die cut and creased to form a blank for an article.
An adhesive mounting film 200 is applied onto a surface of the baseboard 100, the film being protected on its other side by release paper 201. Good contact is made with the baseboard by passing both the baseboard 100 and mounting film 200 with release paper 201 through a pair of cooperating rollers 300.
The release paper 201 is removed to expose adhesive 200 and a sheet of canvas 400 is provided thereon to form a laminate. Examples of other suitable mediums include; silk or art paper such as water colour paper or photo paper, including inkjet photo paper. The laminate 100, 200, 400 is then passed through a second set of cooperating rollers 400 to ensure that the canvas and baseboard are uniformly bonded together.
The laminate sheet 100, 200, 400 can then be die cut and/or creased using techniques commonly known in the art to form a blank suitable for forming a mounting frame. Alternatively the sheet may be die cut/creased to form a blank suitable for forming any other article on which surface decoration is desired e.g. container, lid or toy.
If the medium 400 used is canvas, e.g. oil canvas, the blank maybe painted onto directed. Alternatively the image may be printed onto the medium by passing the blank through a printer. Suitable printers are those which can receive sheet stock thickness of 0.75mm and above.
Known printers available to fulfil this function include the Epson 3080, 4000, 4800, 4880, 7000, 7800, 7600, 9600, 9800, 9880, 7880 and 118800.
Once an image has been produced onto the medium the blank can be assembled by folding, gluing etc into the finished article.
It is envisaged that such mounting frame blanks may be provide in a non-printed state for sale to artists so as to allow them to produce their own mountings or to photo-laboratories to enable then to provide quick in-house canvas mountings of photos supplied by customers.
Alternatively, the medium 400 may be provided onto the baseboard with an image already printed thereon.
Referring now to Figure 2 there is shown a blank 100 for forming a mount for displaying a canvas artwork constructed from a laminate material as described above. The blank 100 defines a main panel 101 onto which the major portion of an image is rendered by painting or printing etc. Adjoined at each edge of the main panel 101 are wall sections 102, 103, 104 and 105 formed from panels hinged one next to the other in series. Short sections 102 and 103 are identical and hinged to opposing peripheries of the main panel 101 along fold lines 120. Similarly long sections 104 and 105 are identical and supported to the other opposing edges along fold lines 130.
Short wall sections 102,103 comprise an outer side panel 105 hingeably joined about fold line 120 to a along a major peripheral edge to the main panel 101 and thereto in series a back panel 106, inner side panel 107 and brace panel 108 by fold lines 121, 122 and 123. Back panel 106 is trapezoidal with free peripheral edges 106A tapering such that fold lines 122 are shorter than fold lines 121. Each back panel 106 further defines two slot like apertures 1 06B which run substantially parallel with fold lines 121, 1 22.
Inner side panel 107 whose free peripheral edges defines tabs 107k Both the inner side panels 107 and brace panels 108 are substantially the same length as fold line 122.
Long wall sections 104, 105 are similarly formed from a series of hingedly adjoined outer side panel 109, back panel 110, inner side panel 111 and brace pane 112 through fold lines 130, 131, 132, 133. The back panels 110 are trapezoidal with free peripheral edges 11 OA tapering such that fold lines 132 are shorter than fold lines 131. The back panels 110 also define two slot like apertures 11 OB which run substantially parallel with fold lines 131, 132.
The inner side panel 111 has free portions lilA that extend away from fold line 132 and are hingedly connected to free portions 11 2A of panel 112 about fold line 133.
Triangular corner panel 105A, 109A are hingedly joined to the end of each respective outer side panel 105, 109 through fold lines 124, 134. Additionally each corner panel 1 05A is hinged to its adjacent counterpart 1 09A by fold lines 140 which extend radially away from each corner of the main panel 101.
Struck from a second sheet is a substantially square backing panel 200 having an outer periphery defining a set of two tabs 201 on each peripheral edge and 4. The tabs are defined from the main panel 201 by told lines 203.
The backing panel further defines apertures 202 for attachment to a supporting strut as illustrated in Figure 3.
Assembly of the blank into a mount is illustrated in Figure 3.
It will be appreciated that the mount as described above is not limited in its construction to the laminate as described above but for example may be formed from cardboard, display board or other material having sufficient resilience to be die cut and folded.
The method of forming a blank is similarly not limited to the blank design as described in figure 2 but may be used to form blanks of any other article such as cartons, lids or toys.
The main panel can be configured to give what ever shaped or sized main panel is desired.
Before assembly an image can be rendered onto the blank by painting printing etc. The image may be confined to only the main panel or also to the sections forming the wall panels so as to give a wrap-around effect.
The strut can take forms other than that illustrated in figure 3.
