Description

ARTWORK PRODUCT
The present invention relates to an artwork product and in particular to a novel construction for receiving or displaying artwork.
Artwork is sometimes printed or painted onto a canvas or other textured material.
This gives the artwork a textured appearance, adding to the overall artistic impression of the work. Typically the canvas (either pre-printed with artwork, or to yet to be painted) is attached to a frame, for example a wooden frame. The canvas has to be stretched on the frame and folded over in the corner regions of the frame, which gives an untidy appearance to the canvas in that area. Moreover, the attachment of the canvas to the frame can be time consuming, and the canvas may not be particularly taut.
The present invention seeks to overcome, or at least mitigate, these problems, and from a first aspect provides an artwork product comprising a tray structure erected from a blank of foldable sheet material, the external base of said structure having an artwork receiving layer laminated thereto.
Thus in accordance with the invention, a tray erected from a blank of foldable sheet material has a layer of artwork receiving material laminated thereto. The tray provides a relatively rigid construction, and allows the corner regions of the artwork a much neater appearance.
The invention also extends to a blank for erection into a tray, a portion of said blank having a layer of artwork receiving material laminated thereto.
The tray is preferably formed with a frame wall construction. Such tray constructions are well known in the packaging art, for example in the packaging of confectionery such as chocolates. In such a construction, each side wall of the tray comprises two walls separated, but joined together, by a panel which forms the upper surface of each wall. The outer walls of each side wall are typically joined by gusset panels to ensure a neat corner construction. Such a construction is particularly advantageous in the context of the present invention since it provides a tidy corner to the artwork. However, in other constructions, the reverse crease that forms the gusset may be replaced by a cut, leaving two flaps which are folded in.
The laminated material may be provided only in a selected area of the blank, but in a preferred embodiment, the material is provided over the entire blank This avoids the need for careful registration of the laminating material and the blank substrate. Most preferably, the laminated material is laminated to the blank material prior to the blank being cut and creased. Thus rolls of substrate and laminating material may be laminated together before further processing.
The artwork may be applied to the laminated layer prior to or after supply of the product. Thus in one embodiment, the product may be supplied pre-printed with artwork. Preferably the artwork is printed onto the laminated layer after it is laminated to the blank. Indeed, the artwork may be printed in a standard blank printing machine.
Alternatively, theproduct may be supplied unprinted, allowing a purchaser to use the product as a blank canvas. The laminated layer could be printed with line work to assist in such painting.
The laminated material may be a canvas material, or another textured material, for example a woven sheet material. Such materials may comprise natural fibres such as cotton, synthetic fibres or a mixture thereof. An example of a suitable cotton material is Printex, a 100% cotton woven material. A suitable synthetic material is Imprimex, a 100% rayon material. A suitable mixed fibre material is Reprotex, a 65% cotton 35% polyester mixture. All three materials are supplied by L Van Heek Textiles by and their agents, such as Winter & Co. UK Ltd., Stone Hill, Huntingdon, Cambs PE29 6ED.
The laminated layer may be textured before or after it is laminated to the base material. It may in many circumstances be easier to effect the texturing, e.g. by an embossing or other process, after lamination.
Alternatively, however, the laminated layer may be any other suitable material such as paper or paperboard material. This layer may be textured or untextured. For example, the layer may be water colour receiving paper.
In a further aspect, therefore, the invention extends to an artwork product comprising a tray structure erected from a blank of foldable sheet material, the base of said structure having an artwork receiving layer of paper or paperboard laminated thereto.
It is also possible that the product may be constructed from a foldable plastics sheet material, such as polypropylene. Such a product need not be provided with a laminated region.
From a further aspect, therefore, the invention provides an artwork product comprising a tray structure erected from a blank of foldable plastics sheet material.
The artwork receiving or displaying surface of the product may be textured. Thus the plastics sheet material may be provided with a textured finish if required. Such a finish may conveniently be applied over a complete face of the sheet. The sheet may be provided with a textured finish during its production, e.g. during extrusion, or treated thereafter to obtain the desired finish.
The plastics material may be transparent or translucent, so that the artwork may be backlit by a suitable light source, or by being hung on a window, for example.
It is also possible that the product may merely be constructed from a foldable board material, such as paperboard, having a textured finish.
From a further aspect, therefore, the invention provides an artwork product comprising a tray structure erected from a blank of foldable board material having a textured finish on at least a region thereof.
The product, or part thereof may be subjected to various finishing or texturing processes, for example foil blocking and einbossing (typically for part of an image), and varnishing.
The product may be supplied flat so as to facilitate storage. It can then be erected as required by a user. Alternatively, the product may be pre-erected. When pre-erected, the tray void could be filled with ancillary products such as paints, crayons, pencils, brushes and so on.
One or more top surfaces of the tray side walls may be provided with hangers for the product. For example, suitable hanging holes may be provided in one or more such walls.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a front view of a product in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 shows a rear view of Figure 1; and Figure 3 shows a blank for erecting into the product of Figure 1.
With reference to Figures 1 and 2, an artwork product 2 comprises a tray like body 3 having an artwork 4 provided on the external base surface 6 of the tray.
As can be seen most clearly from Figure 2, the tray 3 comprises a base wall 8, and side waIls 10, 12, 14, 16. As can be seen from Figure 3, the body 2 is erected from a blank 18. The blank 18 comprises a base substrate formed from a foldable sheet material such as paper board onto which has been laminated, prior to cutting and creasing, a textured material which, in use, will form the external surface 6 of the 5..
base wall 8 of the tray. Each tray side wall comprises an inner panel e.g. lOa, a top panel e.g. lOb and an outer panel e.g. lOc. A gluing tab e.g. lOd is attached to each outer panel 1 Oc.
The respective inner wall panels, 1 Oa, I 2a, I 4a, I 6a are interconnected by gusset panels 20. Each intermediate panel lob, 12b, 14b, 16b is provided with a hanging hole 22.
As stated above, the blank 18 is a laminated material having an artwork receiving material laminated onto a substrate material. This lamination preferably ocCurs prior to the cutting and creasing of the blank which can occur in standard cutting and creasing machinery. If the product is to be sold pre-printed then suitable print work or artwork may be provided on the relevant surface of the blank prior to its erection.
The blank may be sold in a flat configuration or pre-erected. To erect the blank, the respective side walls are formed by folding in the respective sets of side wall panels in a standard manner, with the glue tabs lOd, 12d, 14d, 16d being suitably attached, e.g. glued to the inner surface of the base. The gusset panels 20 ensure that the corners of the product appear neat.
Suitable materials for lamination include a woven 100% cotton material known as Printex, a 100% woven rayon material known as Imprimex, and a woven 65% cotton 35% polyester mixture known as Reprotex. All three of these materials are available from L Van Heek Textiles by.
In other embodiments, the artwork receiving surface may be a paper or paperboard material, which may be textured.
