Abstract

A mounted item of sheet material and method of producing the same wherein the item of sheet material is mounted on a base structure which comprises a box having a closed front face and a partially closed rear face for contributing to the rigidity of the base structure. The item of sheet material is carried in face to face contact with the front face of the box overlapping the front face peripherally and extending to the rear face of the box for attachment to the rear face where the rear face is at least partially closed. One embodiment discloses a picture block 1 which is formed by adhering a printed sheet 7 bearing the picture to a base structure made up of two cardboard box-shells 5 and 6 of one-piece folded construction that are nested mutually-inverted tightly one within the other. The sheet 7 overlaps peripherally the front face 16 of the outer box-shell 5 and is wrapped round the sides of the block 1 to be adhered at the rear to the exposed rear face 3 of the inner box-shell 6. The tightly-fitting shell 6 may be replaced by one or more shell-parts 30-35 that only partially close the open rear of the box-shell 5. Alternatively, the base structure may be formed by a single, closed box formed from a blank 40 with a panel 43 that folds across to close the rear face. A further embodiment is directed at a case for a clock body.

Description

Mounted Items of Sheet-Material This invention relates to mounted items
of sheet-material and methods of mounting such items.

The invention is concerned especially, though not exclusively, with mounted items of visual art which are to be displayed, for example, as wall-hung pictures, and methods of mounting such items.

Original oil or acrylic paintings are conventionally painted on canvas that is stretched over a rectangular, open framework and tacked to it, and are displayed by hanging the framework whether directly or when retained within a peripheral frame, on a wall. Where reproductions of the painting are printed Ofl sheet-material, for example on good-quality paper, canvas or material simulating canvas, the sheet-material may be similarly retained stretched over an open framework.

It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a form of mounted item of sheet-material, and a method of mounting such an item, that may be used with advantage for reducing costs.

According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a mounted item of sheet-material wherein the item of sheet-material is mounted on a base structure that comprises a box having a closed front face and a rear face that is at least partially closed for contributing rigidity to the base structure, and wherein the item of sheet-material is carried in face-to-face contact with the front face of the box overlapping the front face peripherally and extending to the rear face of the box for attachment to the rear face where the rear face is at least partially closed.

The box, which may be of a one-piece construction, may be of cardboard and its front and rear faces may be, for example, four-sided (in particular square or of other rectangular configuration), triangular or circular.

According to a feature of the invention there is provided a mounted item of sheet-material wherein the item of sheet-material is mounted on a base structure that comprises a first box having a closed front face and an open rear face, and a second box which is for contributing rigidity to the base structure and which is nested within the first box such that the rear face of the first box is at least partially closed by the second box, and wherein the item of sheet-material is carried in face-to-face contact with and overlapping the front face of the first box peripherally and extending to the second box for attachment to the second box where the rear face of the first box is at least partially closed by the second box.

The second box may be of the same configuration as the first box, having a closed front face and open rear face, and in this regard may be of slightly smaller dimensions than the first box to enable it to be nested tightly within the first box, the second box being nested within the first box inverted with respect to the first box so that the open rear face of the first box is closed by the closed front face of the second box.

As an alternative to the use of a second box to contribute rigidity to the mounting structure of the mounted item, a single box may be used. The single box in this case may incorporate a panel that is folded over from one of the sides of the box to close or partially close the rear face.

According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a method of mounting an item of sheet-material, the method comprising the steps of constructing a base structure that involves a box having a closed front face and a rear face that is at least partially closed to contribute rigidity to the box, attaching the item of sheet-material in face-to-face contact with the front face of the box overlapping the front face peripherally and folding it to extend to the rear face of the box, and attaching it to the rear face of the box where the rear face is at least partially closed.

According to a feature of the invention there is provided a method comprising constructing a base structure that involves a first box having a closed front face and an open rear face, and a second box for contributing rigidity to the base structure, nesting the second box within the first box such that the rear face of the first box is at least partially closed by the second box, attaching the item of sheet-material in face-to-face contact with the front face of the first box overlapping the front face peripherally, folding the overlapping part to extend to the second box and attaching it to the second box where the rear face is at least partially closed by the second box.

The invention is applicable to the mounting of a printed picture economically, but in a way that will enable it to be displayed, for example in the manner of an original painting, hanging on a wall. In this regard, the mounted picture may have the general form of a picture block with an appearance simulating that of an original painting on canvas retained on a stretcher frame.

Mounted items of sheet-material, and methods of mounting such items, all in accordance with the present invention will now be described, by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, front and rear perspective views of a mounted item of sheet-material, according to the present invention; Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of the mounted item of Figures 1 and 2; Figures 4(a) and 4(b) illustrate successive stages in the manufacture of a box-shell that forms part of a base structure of the mounted item of Figures 1 to 3; Figures 5(a) and 5(b) show rear and front perspective views respectively, of the box-shell manufactured as illustrated in Figures 4(a) and 4(b); Figures 6(a) to 6(d) illustrate successive stages in the attachment of the item of sheet-material to the box-shell of Figures 5(a) and 5(b); Figures 7(a) to 7(c) illustrate successive stages of a further phase in the manufacture of the base structure for the mounted item of Figures 1 to 3; Figures 8(a) to 8(e) are illustrative respectively of five forms of mounting that may be used in accordance with the invention, as alternatives to the mounting of Figures 1 to 3; Figures 9(a) and 9(b) are illustrative respectively of a blank of a base structure and the erected form of that structure, used in a further alternative mounting; and Figures 10 and 11 show forms of blanks that may be used as alternatives to the blank of Figure 9(a).

The mounted item of Figures 1 to 3 will be described in the context of the provision of a picture block in which a printed picture is mounted in accordance with the present invention to enable it to be hung on a wall for display of the picture.

Referring to Figures 1 to 3, the picture block 1 has a front face 2 that bears a printed picture (not shown) and a rear face 3 that has a single aperture 4 therein (more apertures may be provided) to enable the block 1 to be readily hung on a wall for display of the picture on its front face 2. As illustrated by Figure 3, the block 1 involves cardboard box-shells 5 and 6 and a paper wrap 7 that bears the printed picture.

The box-shell 5 is constructed in one piece through the successive stages illustrated in Figures 4(a) and 4(b) from a cardboard blank 10. The blank 10, as shown in Figure 4(a), has a rectangular central panel 11 with opposite pairs of side panels 12 and 13 that are delineated from the panel 11 by score or crease lines 14. The side panels 12 and 13 are folded up from the central panel 11 along the lines 14 as illustrated in Figure 4(b), and are then secured to one another as illustrated in Figure 5(a) by lengths of stay tape 15 adhered to the corners. This establishes the shell 5 as shown in Figure 5(a), and as shown in Figure 5(b) turned over, with the configuration of a box having a closed front face 16 (formed by the underside of the central panel 11) and an open rear face defined by the plane of the free edges of the side panels 12 and 13.

The box-shell 6 is constructed, also in one piece, in the same manner as the box-shell 5 through stages corresponding to those of Figures 4(a) and 4(b). The blank in this case however, has the aperture 4 already cut from its central panel, and the dimensions of its central panel and side panels are all slightly smaller than those of the shell 5 so as to enable the shell 6 to fit or nest tightly inside the shell 5 during assembly of the block 1 before or after the wrap 7 has been adhered to the shell 5.

In the latter regard, the wrap 7 is of paper or synthetic sheet-material, and as shown in Figure 3, has its rear surface 17 divided by creases or notional fold-lines 18 into a central panel 19 with pairs of opposite side panels and 21, corner flaps 22 and fold-over flaps 23 and 24 to the side panels 20 and 21 respectively. When assembling the block 1, glue is first applied to the wrap 7 throughout the surface 17, and the front face 16 of the shell 5 is placed on it in register with the central panel 19 as illustrated in Figure 6(a) to adhere the wrap 7 to the shell 5. The side panels 20 are now folded up as illustrated in Figure 6(b) to adhere them to the outsides of the side panels 12 of the shell 5, and the corner flaps 22 are turned round the corners to adhere them to the outsides of the side panels 13 as illustrated in Figure 6(c). This just leaves the folding up of the side panels 21 as illustrated in Figure 6(d), to adhere them to the outsides of the panels 13 over the flaps 22, in order tb complete the attachment of the wrap 7 to the shell 5. The fold-over flaps 23 and 24 remain upstanding from the sides 20 and 21 until the next phase of assembly.

The successive stages in the next phase of assembly are illustrated in Figures 7(a) to 7(c), and begin, as shown in Figure 7(a), by insertion of the box-shell 6 with its rear face 3 uppermost, into the shell 5. The shell 6 is dimensioned such that it fits very closely into the shell 5 with the face 3 substantially level with the free edges of the sides 12 and 13. Once the shell 6 is fitted, the flaps 24 are folded over to adhere to its rear face 3 as illustrated in Figure 7(b), and this is followed as illustrated in Figure 7(c) by the folding over of the flaps 23 to adhere to the face 3 and complete the manufacture of the block 1. (The order of folding may be changed from that described.) Because the shell 6 fits closely within the shell 5, it is not necessary for stay tape corresponding to the tape 15 to be used in the construction of the shell 6, though in some circumstances its use may be desirable; it is omitted from the illustrations of the shell 6 in Figures 3 and 7(a).

The shell 6 is retained firmly within the shell 5 by the fold-over flaps 23 and 24, and this together with double-thickness at the sides of the block 1 gives substantial rigidity to the base structure for support of the paper or synthetic sheet-material of the wrap 7.

It is to be noted that the fold-over flaps 23 and 24 are effective to seal the shells 5 and 6 together. This is in distinction to the condition that exists in the conventional two-part rigid-box construction, whether hinged or not, where the two parts are not sealed together in order that they may be opened up from one another for access to items within them.

The paper or synthetic sheet-material may be printed using, for example, offset lithography, letterpress, flexography, gravure, silkscreeri, blocking, embossing and/or thermography, in single or multiple colours. The printing may extend throughout the whole of the wrap 7, or may be confined to part, or parts, of it, for example to the front face 2. Furthermore, the printed surface may be of smooth finish or, whether embossed before or after printing, may have a relief texture (for example, giving the appearance of canvas, linen or other woven fabric, wood, slate or stone), and may be coated with a protective varnish or laminated with a protective film.

The construction of the block 1 as described above may be modified in accordance with the invention, as illustrated in Figures 8(a) to 8(e). More especially, the single shell 6 may be replaced by two (or possibly more) shell-parts 30 and 31 as illustrated in Figure 8(a), each having an upper face, two end panels and just one side panel. As alternatives, the shell 6 may be replaced by single shell-parts 32 to 35 illustrated individually in Figures 8(b) to 8(e) respectively. In these cases the fold-over flaps corresponding to the flaps 23 and 24 will provide reduced retention of the relevant shell-part to the front box-shell (the remaining parts of these flaps being folded down inside the front box-shell), so some additional means of retention may possibly be required.

Although the block 1 is described above in the context of bearing a picture for display, it may be used otherwise.

For example it might be used with appropriate printing, in the nature of a greetings card or signage. Alternatively it might be used as part of a clock with printing for the clock-face on the wrap 7 and the clock-mechanism itself carried within the shells 5 and 6.

Instead of providing the aperture 4 for use in the hanging of the block 1, a hook, clasp or other means for attachment to a wall or other support, may be secured to the back of the shell 6.

An alternative to the double-box block 1 described above lies in the possibility of forming the block from a single-box as illustrated for example in Figures 9(a)and 9(b). In this case, a blank 40 as shown in Figure 9(a) has folds 41 delineating main front and rear panels 42 and 43 respectively, with three side panels 44 to each panel 42 and 43 and a side panel 44' intermediate the panels 42 and 43. The blank 40 readily folds up along the folds 41 into a closed, one-piece box as shown in Figure 9(b) with the panels 44 of the two panels 42 and 43 overlapping one another and held erect by tape 45 at each corner. A paper or other wrap bearing a printed picture, corresponding to the wrap 7, is attached to the front, outside face of the panel 42 overlapping it and extending for attachment to the outside face of the rear panel 43.

The need to use tape to hold the box erect can be avoided by suitable modification of the blank 40 to the configuration shown in Figure 10 where additional, tuck-in flaps 46, glue flaps 47 and corner flaps 48 are provided for use in retaining the box erect. An alternative configuration of blank that may be used to the same purpose is illustrated in Figure 11 in which additional side panels 49 are provided to overlap side panels 50 and be held together adhesively without the need for the flaps 46 of the blank of Figure 10.

Many of the operations of cutting, folding and glueing involved in the manufacture of the base structures and mountings described above may be carried out manually or with the use of existing machinery already known for box making.
