My invention relates to car roofs of the allsteel riveted-up type wherein heavy gagev roofing sheets extend from side plate'to side plate of the car and are rigidly secured to each other by seam covers that function as carlines.l
The principal object of. the present inventionis to increase the weather roong qualities of the roof at the eaves endis of the seams. Another object is to provide supporting brackets for the sheets at the eaves ends of the seams and to utilize such brackets as supports for load lifting attachments and as a means for carrying oli' any water that may form part of this specification and wherein' enter the eaves 'ends of said seams. Other objectsare simplicity and cheapness of construction and compactness of design.
The invention consists in the car roof and in the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.-

Referring to the accompanying drawings, my invention is shown in `connection with a car having-Z-bar side plates 1 arranged with their webs horizontal and with their `:inner flanges extending upwardly. The side marginal portions of the-roof sheets are offset u wardl to form raised gradiially increase in width from the ridge to the eaves ends of said sheets. The free marginal edges of the raised ofthe roof sheets are bent up to form upstanding side seam flanges 4 thatextend from end to end of the sheet. At the eaves, the entire end portions ofthe roof sheets, including the side panels 3 and the side seam flanges 4, are turned down to form depending eaves flanges 5 that overhang and are rigidly secured to the upstanding inner flanges of the side plates l preferably by rivets 6. lAs shown in the drawingsthe depth of the eaves end portions of the side sexim llanges 4 are reduced as at 4a, so as to revent rupture of the Imetal or galvanizing w en the flanges arebent down sheets to form 5 thereof.

By the arrangement described, the side seam flanges 4 of the roof sheets, instead of terminating where the sheets are turned down to form the depending eaves flanges 5, are bent down with said eaves flanges thereby reventing water that is forced between the ase flanges 9 of the seam covers 7 and the side panels 3 of the roofl sheets from entering the car where the sheets and seam covers are turned down. The tendency for the water to creep over the shallow end portions 4a of the side seam anges 4 by capillar attraction is prevented b the widened en s 10 of the hollow ribs of t e seam covers 7 which serve to space apart the eaves end portions of said side seamtlanges and the side walls of said hollow ribs.
Located beneath the roof sheets at the eaves ends of the seams are angle-shaped supporting brackets l1. The vertical flange of each sheet supporting bracket is positioned between the upstanding inner flange of the side plate, and the downturned end of the side panels of adjacent roof sheet and is secured in position by the rivets 6. e The other flange of said bracket extends inwardly beneath the side panels of adjacent roof sheets and is secured latwise thereto and to the base flanges!) of the seam cover 7 by rivets l2. The inwardly extending flange of the sheet supporting bracket 11 has a central channel 13 pressed-thereinl which slopes downwardly from the inner end portion of said flange to the depending vertical flange of saidbracket. Bythis arrangement, any water that may be forced over the shallow end portions 4a of the side seamV flanges 4 of the roof sheetsv will be deposited in the channel in the sheet supporting bracket and discharged through the lower, open end of the downturned end of the rib of the seam cover. Secured to the under side of the inwardly extending flange of each sheet supporting bracketfll is a support for a suitable load lifting device. As shown in the drawings said support comprises a channel shape member 14 provided at the top of its walls with outstanding flanges 15 that are riveted Aor otherwise secured latwise to the inner side of the inwardly projecting flange'v of the sheet supporting bracket 1l. The channel portion of said member 14 extends longitudinally of the inwardly extending flange of the sheet supporting bracket l1, and the web of said channel is convexly curved from end to end so as to present a rounded surface to prevent chatting or wear of the chain or rope of the load liftin device.
As shown in t e drawings, plates 16 are interposed between the adjacent side seam flanges 4 of the roof sheets for the purpose mobile cars; but in roofs for ordinary boxA cars theplates are usually omitted and the side seam flanges of the sheets secured together in contact with each other.
The invention is adapted for use with cars having various forms of side plate constructions. and I do not wish to be limited to the preciseA construction shown and described.
What I claim is:
l. A rigid car roof comprising side plates, roof sheets extending from side plate to side plate, said roof sheets being provided along their adjacent margins with upstanding seam flanges, said seam flanges being of reduced depth at the eaves of the car, and seam covers straddling adjacent seam flanges, said seam covers closely embracing and rigidly secured to the deep portions of said seam flanges and being spaced away from the shallow eaves portions thereof in directions transverse thereto. y

A rigid car roof comprising side plates, root` sheets extending from side plate to side plate, said roof sheets beingl provided along their adjacent margins with yupstanding seam iianges having eaves end portions of reduced depth that are turned down over the side plates, and seam covers straddling adjacent seam flanges and rigidly secured thereto and having their eaves end Iportions turned down over the adjacent llanged margins of said roof sheets. l
3. A rigid car roof comprising side plates, roof sheets extending from side plate to side plate, said roof sheets being provided along their adjacent margins with upstanding seam flanges having eaves end portions of reduced depth that are turned down over the side plates and seam covers straddling adjacent seam danges and rigidly secured thereto and having their eaves end portions turned down over the adjacent flanged margin of said roof sheets, said seam covers closely embracing the deep portions of said seam langes and being spaced awayv fron'the shallow eaves portions thereof in directions transverse thereto.
4. A rigid car roof comprising side plates, roof sheets extending from side plate to side plate, said roof sheets being provided along their adjacent margins with upstanding seam langes\having eaves end portions of reduced depth that are turned down over the side plates, and seam covers straddling adjacent seam flanges and being rigidly secured thereto and having shallow eaves end portions that are turned down over the adjacent margins of the downturned eaves ends of said sheets, said seam covers closely embracing the deep portions of said seam flanges and being spaced away from the shallow downturned 4eaves end portions thereof in directions transverse thereto.
