This invention relates toinsulated car roofs of the type shown in my Patent No. 1,643,95, dated October 4, 1927, wherein the metal roof sheets are rigidly connected along their ad.- jacent margins by upstanding seams that function asoutside carlines and have sti-idening plates embodied therein that constitute hangers for suspending the insulating lining from the roof.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a simple and ellcient arrangement for attaching the insulating lining to the roof that will increase the strength and rigidity of the roof. Other objects are cheapness and compactness of construction and fewness of parts.
The invention consists principally in the means for suspending the insulating lining from the roof; and it also consists in the parts and in the construction and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The present roof comprises roof sheets l that extend from side plate 2 to side plate 2 of the car and slope downwardly on opposite sides of the ridge to form a pitch or arcuate roof. wise rigidly secured to the outstanding top i i flanges of the eaves strips l and are preferably provided at their eaves ends with depending drip flanges 5 that overhang the outer edges of said eaves strips. The roof sheets are arranged on the car side by side and are provided along their adjacent margins with upstanding seam flanges 6 that are beveled or coped ott at the eaves ends of the roof sheets. rlhe body portions of the roof sheets are preferably offset upwardly adjacent to the upstanding seam flanges b to form raised panels 7 at the side margins of the sheets.
Metal seam caps 8 of substantially U- shaped cross-section are placed astride adjacent seam flanges 6 of adjacent roof sheets and are rigidly secured to said flanges by horizontal rivets 9, thereby forming upstanding seams that function as exterior carlines for the roof. The seam caps 8 .extend from eaves to eaves of the car and are provided of the car at the ridge and is supported on and secured' to the lateral top fianges of angle-shaped running board saddles 12 that are secured to the sides of the seam caps 8 by the securing rivets 9 therefor. Additional strength and rigidity are imparted to the upstanding seams `by means of metal plates or strips 13 embodied therein. Each of these stifllening plates 18 is of substantially angle-shaped cross-section and has `one flangedlsposed vertically and interposed between the adjacent upstanding roof sheet flanges 6. Each seam stilfening plate 18 preferably extends from the upstanding flange 3 of the side plate 2 to a. point adjacenty to the ridge and secured within the seam by means of the rivets 9 that secure the seam cap 8 to the adjacent side marginal seam flanges 6 of the roof sheets. The seam stiffening members or plates 13 are madey deep enough so that their laterally extending base flanges l14 are spaced far enough below the raised side marginal panel 7 of the roof sheet located thereabove to accommodate wooden 5 nailing strips 15. These nailing strips 15 are supported on the base flanges 14 of the seam stiffening plates 13 and are secured to the vertical flanges thereof by means of horizontal bolts 16 that pass through alined open- 10 ings provided therefor inl said nailing strips and in the upstanding flanges of said stiffening plates. The wooden nailing strips are made wider than the base flanges 14 of the seam stiffening plates 13; and an insulating 15 lining 17 `comprising boards or other suitable Y insulating material is nailed or otherwise se cured to the und'ersides of the portions of said nailing strips located beyond the base flanges offsaid seam stiffening plates. As shown in the drawing, the nailing strips 15 are rabbet-ed to lit thebase flanges 14 of the seam stiffening plates 13, thereby bringing the f bottoms of Vportions of the strips located e beyond said base flanges flush with the bot-- toms thereof. f
vThe hereinbefore describedY arrangement provides a simple and efficient means for attaching a'lining to a car roof of the type hereinbefore described. It enables the depth of the vertical flange of the seam stifl'ening plate to be increased and thus increases the load-carrying capacity of the seam without decreasing the headroom of the car; it eliminates the necessity for notching the base flange of the seam stilening plate and the necessity for rabbeting or grooving of the upper surface of the nailing strip; and it enables the nailing strip to be supported upon the base flange of the seamstiil'ening plate, which nailing strip is firmly held in position by bolts that pass horizontally through said strip and the vertical flange of said plate. l In the modified construction .as shown in Fig. 4, the seam stifi'ening plate 13a is shown the form of a plate'without a lateral base flange; and the nailing strip 15a is secured to the side of said plate by means of a horizontal bolt 16a Whose head portion is preferably riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to said plate so as to prevent said bolt from tilting vertically. n WhatIclaimis: i Y
