CAR ROOF.

This invention relates principally to metal car roofs of the flexible single course type wherein the carlines are connected to the side plates by brackets and the roof sheets are arranged between the cai-lines with their adjacent side margins loosely connected by seam covers, which rest on said carlines, and
with their eaves ends supported on wooden fascia members that are bolted to the vertical faces of said side plates.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to utilize the carline brackets as a means for' supporting the eaves ends of the roof sheets. Another object is to utilize the carline bracket as a support for a loading lifting attachment. Other objects are simplicity and cheapness of construction and compactness of design.
The invention consists in the carline bracket and in the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view of the eaves portion of the car roof; and
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section through the seam, carline and carline bracket onthe line 4-4 in Fig. 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, our invention is shown in connectionl with a car roof comprising Z-bar side plates 1 arranged with their webs horizontal and with one flange in and extending upwardly. The Z-bar side plates on opposite sides of the car are connected by metal carlines 2 preferably of substantially inverted channel-shape provided with outstanding base flanges 3 at the lower edges of their side walls.
Metal roof sheets 4 extend from side to side of the car between carlines and rest on purlins 5 secured to the carlines and preferably also have their eaves end portions supported on wooden fascia strips 6 that are removably secured flatwise to the outer or Serial No. 258,508.
vertical face of the upstanding inner flanges of the side plates preferably by means of bolts 7. The roof sheets are narrower than the spaces between the channel portions of the cai-lines and are provided with depending eaves flanges 8 that overhang the outer edges of the wooden fascia members 6 and terminate at their lower ends in inturned flanges that are spaced away from said fascia members, whereby said sheets are independently movable.
The roof sheets are provided along their adjacent side margins with upstanding flanges 9 that are loosely connected by seam covers 10 of substantially inverted channelshaped section that have lateral base flanges 11 that bear against the body portions of the sheets inside the side marginal flanges thereof. The seam covers rest on and are riveted to` the flattops of the carlines and are provided at their eaves ends with depending flanges 12 that overhang and are spaced from the eaves corners of adjacent sheets and terminate at their lower ends in inturned flanges which extend beneath and are spaced below the inturned lower ends of the depending eaves flanges adjacent to the roof sheets.
As shown in the drawing, each end of a carline 2 is rigidly secured to an ad'acent side plate 1 by means of an angle-s aped carline bracket A. The carline bracket is disposed beneath the endv of the carline with its vertical flange 13 down and riveted flatwise to the outer face of the upstanding inner flange of the Z-bar side plate and with its other flange 14 extending inwardly be- 'neathA the end of the carline and riveted flatwise tothe outstanding base flanges 3 thereof. The inwardly extending carline supporting flange 14 of the carline bracket A is made wider than the carline and has its side marginal portions offset upwardly, as at 15, on opposite sides of the carline to provide a'channel-shaped seat for the end of the carline and outstanding flanges at the tops of, the side walls of said channel for supporting the side marginal portions of adjacent sheets near their eaves ends.
The web of the carline supporting channel in the inwardly extending flange 14 of the carline bracket A is also provided beneath the downwardly opening channel of the carline with a downwardly bossed circular opening 16, through which the chains or ropes of a load lifting device (not shown) may be passed. As shown in the drawing, the lweb of the carline supporting channel in the inwardly extending' flange lli of the carline bracket is provided at the end of said flange and opposite the bossed epeningl with a depending stiflcning flange which flange, together` with the flange which surrounds said opening, is rounded olf` where it joins the supporting flange of the carline bracket to prevent chaling or wear of the chain or rope of the load lifting device. e
By the arrangement described the sheets rest onV the upwardly offset side marginal flange portions l5 of tl e carline bracket, whereby the eaves ends of the sheets are prevented from sagging and thus causing the seams to leak at the eaves in the event that the wooden fascia gives way due to rotting of the'fascia or loosening of its securing bolts. Another advantage of the present construction is that it dispenses with the use of separate attachments for supporting the load lifting device and thus -saves the cost of such attachments. l
It is evident that the carline bracket hereinbefore described is applicable for use with cars having side plates, carlines and seams of various construction; therefore, we do not wish to be limited to the details of construction shown and described.k
What we claim is: Y l. A carroof comprising` side plates connected by carlines, roof sheets located between carlines and carline brackets secured to said side plates and to the undersides of said carlines, said carline brackets having upwardly offset side marginal portions extending on opposite sides of said carline beneath adjacent sheets andconstituting supports therefor.
2. A car roof comprising side plates con nected by carlines, roof sheets located between carlines and carline brackets secured to said side plates and to the undersides ofV said carlines, said carline brackets .having upwardly offset side marginal flange portions extending on opposite sides of said carline beneath adjacent sheets and constituting supports therefor, said carline brackets being provided with means for supporting load lifting devices.

A car roof comprising side plates connected by carlines, wooden fascia members secured to the vertical faces of said side plates, roof sheets extending from side plate to side plate between carlines l with their eaves ends supported on said fascia members, seam covers supported on said carlines and loosely connecting adjacent sheets, and carline bracketsV secured to said side plates and to the undersides of said carlines, said brackets being made wider than the carlines and having the portions thereof located beyond the side of said carlines odset upwardly for supporting adjacent sheets on opposite sides of said carlines.

A car roof comprising side plates connected by carlines, wooden fascia members secured to the vertical faces of said side plates, roof sheets extending from side plate to side plate between carlines with their eaves ends supported on said fascia members, seam covers supported on said carlines and loosely connectingadjacent sheets, and carline brackets secured to said side plates and to the undersides of said carlines, said brackets being provided with means for supporting adjacent sheets on opposite sides of said carlines, andmeans'on said brackets beneath said carlines for supporting a load lifting device. j Y

A car roof comprising side plates connected by carlines, wooden fascia members secured to the vertical faces of said side plates, roof sheets extending from side plate to side plate between carlines with their eaves ends supported on said fascia members, seam covers supported on said carlines and loosely connecting adjacent sheets, and carline brackets. for securing the ends of said carlines to said side plates, each of said carline brackets comprising a flange secured to thev side plate and a fiange extending beneath the end of the carline andrigidly secured to the underside thereof, the carline supporting flange of said bracket being provided with a channel-shaped seat for the carline and outstanding flanges at the top of the side walls of said channel for supporting the eaves corner portions of adjacent roof sheets. p Y

A car roof comprising side plates connected by inverted channel-shaped carlines, wooden fascia members secured to the vertical faces of said side plates, roof sheets extending from side plate to side plate between carlines with their eaves endsk supported on said fascia members, seam covers supported on said carlines and loosely connecting adjacent sheets, and carline brackets for Securing the ends of said carlines to said side plates, each of said carline brackets comprising a. flange secured to the side plate and a. flange extending beneath the end of the carline and rigidly secured to the underside thereof, the carline supportingfiange of said bracket being made wider than the carline and having the side marginal portions thereof located beyond the sides of the carline and offset upwardly to constitute supports for'adjacent roof sheets, said carline su `porting flange having an opening located beneath the inverted channel of the carline adapted to receive a load lifting device. 7. A carline bracket having a flange provided with a channel-shaped carline seat and outstanding sheet supporting flanges at the inner edges of the side walls of the channel-shaped carline seat.
8. A carline bracket having a carline supporting fiange provided with upwardly offset side marginal flange portions adapted to support roof sheets.
9. A carline bracket having' a iange provided with upwardly oifset sheet supporting flange portions and means located between said flanges for attaching a load lifting device to said flange.
10. A carline bracket having a carline supporting portion and also having a roof sheet supporting portion.
