lt is very common-in power driven typewriting machines to have all instrumentalities ofthe machine, such as the type action, escapement mechanism and ribbon mechanism, operated by power and to vhave this operation controlled by a slight depression of the key lever. This slight depression of the key lever constitutes the whole of the work that is performedby the operator, the remainder thereof K being performed by the power mechanism.A
ln certain type actions, particularly that embodied in the standard Royal machine, the amount ot work involved in actua-ting the type action to bring the type bars to the printing point is very slight, theV greatest amount of work is that involved in the operation of thek escapement and the ribbon mechanism.
rlhe present invention relates to mechanism wherein the type'action is-operated manually in the usual manner while the escapement mechanism and ribbon mechanism are operated by power. All of these elements and y the lever which operates the same may be the same as thevusual corresponding instrumentalities in the standard Royal machine. The operating lever, however, is not operated from any part of the type action as has previouslyvbeen the case, butthere is provided a universal bar which initiates the operation ot the power mechanism and the power mechanism actuates the operating leverto thereby produce proper movements of the escapement and ribbon mechanisms.
ylfhis invention is in many respects very similar to that shown and claimed in my prior application No. 242,165 filed Dec. 23, 1927, which matured July 30, 1929, into Patent No. 1,7 22,937. Claims common to the subject matter of both cases are placed in the prior application whilethe present invention cov-` ers features ot construction not shown in the earlier case.

and consequently the universal bar l is movable bodily in a fore and aft direction and in a substantially straight line located in a horizontal plane.
The bell crank lever 38 is provided with a `:forwardly extending arm 40 to which one end of a coil spring 4l is connected, the other end of said spring being secured to a fixed part of the machine frame. Thus when the universal bar l is moved rearwardly under impact `of a type arm, said bar together with the horizontal supporting arms 33, 33 will be moved rearwardly in a substantially horizontal plane, said movement rocking the bell crank levers 3l and 38 against the tension of the spring Lll. Consequently when the type bar begins its return movement, the spring 4l will function to return the universal bar l and the bell crank levers 3l and 38 to their initial positions.
The other end of the lever 7 is adapted to operate a trip member 23 which controls power mechanism X""and permits 'the same to come into operative engagement with a constantly rotating shaft Y. This mechanism isv substantially the same as that shown in patent to Dorsey No.1,628,037 of May 10, 1927, and needs no further detailed description herein. It may be noted that the trip member 23 is substantially or exactly the same' as the member designated by that reference numeral in the above-cited patent. This power mechanism has been selected for illustration although it is obvious that some other form of power mechanism might be employed so long as it is brought into operation by the movement of the lever 7.
The movement of the power mechanism will swing a bell crank lever 9 which is pivoted at 10 on a frame member 1l which supports the entire power unit. This bell crank lever is connected 'by an adjustable link 12 with the operating lever L above described.l
Vhenever a key lever F is depressed, a type bar will be moved to printing position in the usual manner. As the type bar reaches the dotted line position of Figure l it contacts with the universal bar l and the movement of the latter throws the power mechanism into operation. from the dotted line position of Figure 1 lto the full line position of Figure 2 the power mechanism has substantially completed its v operation and the operating lever L has actuated the ribbon vibrator and the escapement mechanism has been given the first part of its to and fro movement.
By the time the type bar is moved i Since the power mechanism is immediately disconnected as soon as it completes its operative movement, it is obvious that the operating lever L, escapement mechanism and ribbon mechanism will at once return to their normal positions and the type action will be returned to its normal position by the usual springs upon releasing the pressure from the key lever.
exceedingly rapid operation of the machine. Various details of construction may obviously be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention, which is to be regarded as limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention l. In a typewriting machine embodying a type bar, an operating lever, and escapement and ribbon mechanism actuated by said lever; the combinationof a key lever for operating said type bar, a universal bar which is moved by direct engagement of the type bar, arock shaft, supporting arms fixed on said rock shaft and pivotally connected to the respective ends of the universal bar, power operated devices, operative connections between the power operated devices andthe operating lever, and operative connections between the supportingarms and the power operated devices for bringing the latter into operation upon movement of the universal bar.
2. In a typewriting machine embodying a type bar, an operating lever, and escapement and ribbon mechanism actuated by said lever; the combination of a key lever for operating said type bar, a universal bar which is moved by direct engagement of the type bar, a rock shaft, supporting arms ixed on said rock shaft and pivotally connected to the respective ends of the universal bar, spaced arms extending rearwardly from the universal bar, pivotally mounted supporting arms respectively `pivoted to the rear ends of the rearwardly extending arms, said pivoted supporting arms being of the same radius whereby the. universal bar will be moved in a substantially horizontal plane, power operated devices, operative connections nbetween the power operated devices and the operating lever, and operative connections between one of the supporting arms and the power operated devices for bringing the latter` into operation upon movement of the universal bar.
