One ofthe objects ofthe present invention is an improved mechanism for effecting and changing the settings of the vibrator; the parts thereof being of simple and durable construction, .and of Isuch design as to be capable of being compaotlyl assembled.
VMost typewriting machines have a case shift, the platen being ordinarily shiftable between upper and lower oase positions. The ribbon vibrator must be accommodated to this shift.
An object .of the present invention is an improved support and mounting for thevibrator, and for the actuating and setting mechanisms of the latter, in combination with novel means for shifting the support with the platento maintain proper relation between the ribbon and theyplaten. l

Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Fig. 2, the platen 1 is shown as journaled in platen frame 2, mounted on the carriage 3 and shiftable up and down thereon to bring the platen to upper and lower case positions. A roller 4 on the platen frame runs on a shift rail 5, carried on a frame 5a, adapted to be swung up around a pivot 5", by shift-key levers, operated by the usual shift key 5d. The type bars 6 are actuated by keys 8 on the key levers 9 connected to the type-bars through bell cranks having pins7 working in slots in the typebars to swing the latter about their fulerums, so that depression of a key 8 throws the connected type bar upward and rearward to cause a type 10 to strike against the front face of the platen.
rFhe carriage may be driven by the usual spring drum (not shown); and the letterfeed movement of the carriage is controlled by esoapement mechanism comprising a dogrocker 11, and an escapement wheel 12, which dogs 13, on the rocker, engage. A pinion 14, connected to drive the escapement wheel l2 during the letter-feed travel of the carriage, runs in mesh with a rack 15 on the carriage. A universal bar 16 lies in the path of shoulders 17 on the type-bars 6, and at each type stroke, a shoulder 17 strikes the universal bar as the type approaches the printing point and moves the universal bar rearward, thereby causing a rearward extension 18 of the universal bar to strike and `operate the dog-rocker y1.1. .At
the rear of the universal bar, the ends thereof are pivotally connected, as at 19, to arms 20 which swing on a rod 21, mounted in the frame, thus supporting and guiding the bar in its movements. Forward, the bar is also supported by, and slides on, the type segment. The bar therefore moves easily and with the same movement for all type strokes. lt cannot be twisted or distorted by the strokes of outlying type-bars adjacent its ends; and in actuating the escapement mechanism and the ribbon-vibrating mechanism, as hereinafter to be described, its movements are reliable and uniform for all type-bars.
The ribbon vibrating mechanism (see more particularly Fig. 4) comprises a ribbon vibrator and guide 23 through which the ribbon 24 is threaded, and by which it is vibrated over the printing point at each type stroke. The ribbon preferably comprises a plurality of color bands or zones for printing in vdifferent colors, and, as shown, comprises an upper black band 26 and a lower red band 27. rlhe vibrator is actuated by a vibrator lever 28 to which it has a hook-and-pin connection 29. T he lever 28 is pivoted at 30, by means of a pin 34, to a plate 31. lThe plate 31 (see Figs. 7 and 9) at its front edge, fits within a way 32 in the frame 33. lts rear edge lies in a guideway 32a, which, however, is not closed at 'the rear, in order that for certain purposes later to be mentioned and relating to the assembling of the machine, the plate 31 may be swung out through the guideway 32a. Normally, however, a plate 85, pivoted to the frame at 8G, is held by a coil spring 87 in such position as to close the rear of the guideway 32, thus preventing any but a sliding up-and-down movement of the plate 31 in its ways. The purpose of permitting the plate 31 to have such movement is that it may be shifted with the platen between case positions. To effect this up-and-down shift of the plate 31, the pin 34, which connects the lever 23 to the plate, also connects the plate to the end of a lever 35, the other end of which is pivotally connected, at 36, to the type segment. Carried by this lever 35, at an intermediate point 37 thereof, is a pin 38, held in a slot 39 in a bracket 40, secured to and depending from the shift rail 5. When, therefore, the platen and with it the bracket 40, is lifted or lowered, the lever 35 is rocked about its pivot 36, and the plate 31 with its connected parts correspondingly lifted or lowered. Slot 39 allows for the necessary play of the pin 38 as the lever swings.
The vibrator lever 28 is actuated at each type stroke, that is to say, whenever the ribbon is to be used. In stenciling, since the ribbon is not desired, the vibrator is silenced in a manner presently to be described. The

This -actuator consists .ofa toggle having two links-or arms 41 and 42, pivotally connected at 43. rl`he lower arm 41 is pivoted at 44'to the plate 31 near the foot of the latter, so that vthe toggle as a whole moves with the lplate 31 betweencase positions. The upper arm 42 of the toggle carriesa pin 45 which ypasses through a slot 46 in the vibrator lever 28, and beyond the latter is engaged in a fork 47 in a setting plate or arm 48. The plate 48 is mounted to swing about the point 44 on the platelas afpivot, and the same pin 49 which serves to pivot the toggle arm 41 to the plate 31, may serve as the pivot of the plate 48.
According to the` set position of the pin'45 in slot 46, the toggle will give the vibrator lever, and with it the ribbon, a longer or shorter throw when the toggle is actuated at ytype strokes. The setting of the pin 45 in the slot 46 is determined by the angular position of the plate 48; andthe position of the plate 48 is in turn controlled by the following means: A rock shaft .50, supported at one end, at 51, in the toggle-supporting plate 31, passes througha slot 52 in the setting arm or plate 48. ,The Vslot 52 is curved in the arc of a circle struck from 44 as a center, so that the plate 48 may swing without interfering with the shaft 50. Beyond the plate 48 the shaft 50 has a U-shaped bend 53, which acts as an arm and is loosely held between two ears 54 on the .plate 48. l/Vhen the shaft'is rocked,'the bend` 58 therein lengages one of the ears 54 and moves the plate 48 to set the toggle. The other .end of the shaft is held in a bracket 55 on the machine frame, by a'collar 56. Its support in the bracket 55 is, however, sufliciently loose to permit its other end, at 51, to be raised and lowered with -theftoggle plate 31 in case-shifting.
Fixed to the rock shaft 50is an arm 57, connected by a link 58 to an arm 59 fast on a second rock `shaft 60. The shaft 60, at the front of the machine, carries on either side thereof, an arm 61, .on which keys 62 and 68, respectively, vare mounted. Vhen the keys are equally elevated, the position of the shafts and 50-and ofplate 48 is such that the pin 45 on the toggle-is about central of the slot 46 in the vibrator-lever 28, as shown in Fig. 8. If when the pin 45 is held in this position, the toggle is actuated, .the throw ofthe vibrator Aleverwill be such as to bring the upper yor black ribbon band ,to theprint- .ing point. Since, in stenciling, no throw of the ribbonfis desired, there remains tobe described one otherfadjustment of the toggle pin 45.
It will be noted on reference to the drawings, that the slot 46 has, leading from one end thereof at approximately a right angle thereto, a slot 65. If the toggle pin 45 be `brought to that end of slot 46, and the tog- -gle thereupon actuated, the pin 45 merely moves in the slot 65 without actuating the vibrator lever. This, which is the stenciling yposition of the toggle, is effected by still another movement of the key shaft 60. Fast to one of the key-carrying arms 61 is a pin 466. During the'movement of the keys 62 and 63, between Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 positions,
the pin 66 moves in a slot 67 in a platef68, and the ends-of slot 67 may serve as stops to `determine the throw ofthe keys and conznected'parts. rlhe plate 68 is pivoted to the machine frame at 69. It carries a lingerpiece 70 by means of which it may be moved about its pivot, and-a spring detent 71 by :means of which it may be heldagainst displacement by coperation `with notches 72 and 78 in a. fixed bar. Normally 'the .plate 68 is in Fig. 1 position.
Then stenciling is to bey done, plate 68 is swung back until detent 71 engages notch 73. This movement of the plate 68 causes the pin 66 to move across the slot- 67, `and,'on 'strik-` ing the other side wall thereof, to be cammed by the latter into a branch slot 75, and to be Iforced down this lbranch slot until it rides onto a dwell 76 at the end thereof. In thus forcing the pin 66 down the slot 75,.'the shaft 60 is moved to bring the toggle pin 45 to Fig. 9 position, for movement in the slot .65 in the vibrator lever. The dwell 76 locks 4the keys and` shaft 60 against movement untilthe plate 68 is` returned to norm'al'position. On` return of plate 68 to normal position, the pin 66 is cammed to theupper end of its slot, thereby 'bringing the .keys and connected 'parts to black ribbon position, :no matter from what position they may have been ythrown on the movement vto stenciling position.
It remains to describe the' actuation of the ribbon vibrator from the *universal bar at the type strokes. Secured to the under side of the universal bar is a depending bracket or slotted ear 7.7. lThe slot 7 Sinthis ear is vertical and .engages an extend-ed portion of the pivot pin 43, which connects .the arms 41 and 4.2 ofthetoggle. Forward r-and. backwardsmovement of this slotted -ear with the universal bar therefore collapses and straightens out the toggle to give the vibrator lever its throw. T he length of the slot 7 8 is not only sutlicient for the up and down play of the toggle joint, but is sufficient to permit the toggle to be moved between ease positions and to be operable in either position.
A stop 80 in the form of an overturned ear on the toggle-setting plate 48, by engagement with the vibrator lever 28, positively determines the throw of the ribbon, and prevents overthrow of the latter. When the plate 48 has been swung to a position to set the toggle for the black ribbon printing, the stop 80, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, is in line with, and engages a lug 81 on the vibrator lever; but when the setting is for the red ribbon, the stop (see Figs. 4 and 6) is rearward of the lug 81 and arrests the vibrator lever 28 by direct engagement therewith.
In connection with the description of the mounting of the toggle support 31, reference was made to the fact that the guideway 32a therefor was in part formed by a pivoted plate 85, so that at times the support 31 could be swung rearwardly around its pivot 30.
The purpose of such a swing of plate 81 is to permit the type-bars to be removed from, or placed in, the type segment. It is usual in typewritinO` machines to support the universal bar on the type segment over the points of attachment to the latter of the type-bars. 0rdinarily, when a type-bar is to be placed or removed it is simply necessary to throw back the universal bar suil'iciently to uncover the type-bar attachments.
In the present invention, however, the rearward movement of the universal bar is normally limited, and is determined by engagement of the vibrator lever 28 with the stop 8O on the setting plate 48. This normal movement may not be suilicient to permit removal of the type-bars, and therefore the following means is provided to permit of an abnormal movement of the universal bar when desired.
Since it is indirectly the toggle support 31 which normally arrests the movement of the universal bar when the vibrator lever 28 contacts with stop 80, it is apparent that by releasing the support 31 to a swinging movement around its pivot 30, an additional throw oic the universal bar may be obtained. This release of the toggle support is edected by a removal of the plate 85, which normally obstructs the rear of the guideway 32a. To remove the plate 85, it is merely swung by a linger-piece 88 around its pivot 86. Such a movement of the plate 85 forces the edge thereof against a cani face 89 on an arm which is rigidly attached to the pivot rod 21 of the universal bar, and thus causes the universal bar to be given an abnormal rearward throw, and through its connection readies with the toggle on a vibrator support, simultaneously to swing the latter rearwardly through the guideway 32a, previously obstructed by the plate 85. While plate 85 is held in this position, type-bars may be removed. On release of the plate 85, its spring 87 returns it to normal position, determined by a stop 90, which the plate strikes on its return movement. A cam 91 on the plate 85 strikes and returns the toggle support 31 to normal position duringthe return movement oi' the plate 85. rlhe usual spring (not shown) throws forward the universal bar.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. In a typewriting machine; type keys; a ribbon vibrator; means for actuating the vibrator from the type keys, said actuating means comprising a vibrator lever and atoggle connected directly to said lever; and means for shitting the point of connection of the toggle toward and from tlie tulcrum of the lever to vary the throw of the vibrator.

In a typewriting machine; type keys; a ribbon vibrator; means for actuating the vibrator; and means comprising a rockshaft and a key-carrying arm thereon'for changing the point of connection of the vibrator to its actuator to vary the throw of the vibrator; said key being movable in one direction to increase said throw, and a cam arranged to move the key farther in the same direction and thereby render the actuator inoperative. In a typewriting machine; type keys; a ribbon vibrator; means for actuating the vibrator; means comprising a rock shaft and a key-carrying arm thereon for changing the point of connection ot the vibrator to its actuator to vary the throw of the vibrator; and a cam engaging said key-carrying arm and operative at will to rock said shaft to a position in which the actuator is rendered inoperative.

In a typewriting machine; type keys; a ribbon vibrator; means for actuating the vibrator; a key; means actuated by the key for changing the point of connection of the actuator to the vibrator to vary the throw of the latter; a key-setting device operative to move the key into position :tor rendering the actuator inoperative; and means whereby the actuator when returned from inoperative to operative position by the return of the key-setting device is uniformly set for the same throw ot the vibrator.

In a typewriting machine; a bichrome ribbon vibrator; means to actuate the vibrator comprising a lever, and a toggle connected to the lever; means for setting the toggle for different throws of the vibrator; comprising a pivoted arm in engagement with one end of the toggle; and means for adjusting the angular position ot said arm, and thereby shifting the point of connection of the toggle and lever toward and from the ulcrum of the lever.

In a typewriting machine; a bichrome ribbon vibrator; an actuating lever therefor; a toggle connected to said lever for acuating it; means for setting the toggle for different throws of the vibrator, comprising a pivoted arm in engagement with one end of the toggle; and a key-controlled rock shaft for adjusting the angular position of said arm; and thereby shitting the point oi" connection of the toggle and lever toward and from the ulcrum or" the lever.

In a typewriting machine; a bichrome ribbon vibrator; a toggle for actuating the same; means t'or setting the toggle for different throws of the vibrator, comprising a pivoted arm in engagement with the toggle to set the latter in diierent relations to the vibrator; means for adjusting the angular position ot said arm; and a stop on said arm for positively determining the throw of the vibrator to prevent overthrow of the ribbon.

In a typewriting machine; a bichrome ribbon vibrator; a toggle for actuating the same; means for setting the toggle for diiferent throws of the vibrator, comprising a pivoted arm in engagement with the toggle to set the latter in different relations to the vibrator; means for adjusting the angular position oit' said arm; and a common support tor said toggle and setting arm shiftable between case positions.

In a typewriting machine; a platen; means for shifting the same between case positions; a ribbon vibrator; an actuator for said vibrator; a support tor the actuator; means for shifting the actuator with the platen between case positions, comprising an arm pivoted at one end to the machine frame and pivotally connected at another point to the actuator support; and means 'for swinging said arm with the platen.

In a typewriting machine; a platen; means for shifting the same between case positions; a ribbon vibrator; an actuator for said vibrator; a support for the actuator; means for shifting the actuator with the platen between case positions, comprising an arm pivoted at one end to the machine :trame and pivotally connected at another point to the actuator support; and an attachment to the platen-shifting means in engagement with said pivoted arm to swing the latter when the platen is shifted.

In a typewriting machine; a platen; means for shifting the same between case positions; a ribbon vibrator; an actuator tor said vibrator; a support for the actuator; means for shifting the actuator with the platen between case positions, comprising an arm pivoted at one end to the machine trame and pivotally connected at another point to the actuator support; and an attachment to the platen-shifting means in pin-and-slot engagement with said pivoted arm to swing the latter when the platen is shifted.

In a typewriting machine; a platen; means for shifting the same between case positions; a ribbon vibrator; Kan actuator tetonas for said vibrator; a support for the actuator; means for shifting the actuator with the platen between case positions, comprising a rigid arm pivoted at one end to the machine frame and pivotally connected at another point to the. actuator support; and means for swinging said arm with the platen.

In a typewriting machine; a platen; means for shifting the same between case positions; a ribbon vibrator; an actuator for said vibrator, a sliding support ior the actuator; means for shifting the actuator with the platen between case positions, comprising an arm pivoted at one, end to the machine rame and pivotally connected at another point to the actuator support; and means for swinging said arm with the platen.

In a typewriting machine; a platen; means for shitting the same between case positions; a ribbon vibrator; an actuator for said vibrator; a support for the actuator mounted to slide in ways in the machine trame; means for shifting the actuator with the platen between case positions, comprising an arm pivoted at one end to the machine frame and pivotally connected at another point to the actuator support; and means for swinging said arm with the platen.

In a typewriting machine; a platen; means for shitting the same between case positions; a ribbon vibrator; an actuator for said vibrator; a support for the actuator; means for shifting the actuator with the platen between case positions, comprising an arm pivoted at one end to the machine frame and pivotally connected at another point to the actuator support; means for swinging said arm with the platen; means for setting the actuator for different throws of the vibrator; and means for positively preventing overthrow of the ribbon in both case positions.

In a typewriting machine; a platen; means for shifting the same between case positions; a ribbon vibrator; an actuator for said vibrator; a support for the actuator; means for shifting the actuator with the platen between case positions, comprising an arm pivoted at one end t0 the machine trame and pivotally connected at another point to the actuator support; means for swinging said arm with the platen; means tor.l setting the actuator for different throws of the vibrator; and a stop on said actuator setting means for positively preventing overthrow of the ribbon in both case positions.

In a typewriting machine; type bars; a universal bar; a ribbon vibrator; a support for the vibrator; an actuating connection from the universal bar to the vibrator; means for normally limiting the throw of the vibrator, and reacting through said connection and said support to limit the throw of the universal bar and means for providing a shift of the vibrator support from normal position to permit of an abnormal` throw of the universal bar, so that the type bars may be removed.

In a typewriting machine; typevbars; a universal bar; a ribbon vibrator; a support for the Vibrator; an actuating connection from the universal bar to the vibrator; means for normally limiting the throw of the vibrator, and reacting through said connection and said support to limit the throw of the universal bar; and means for providing a swing of the vibrator support from normal position to permit of an abnormal throw of the universal bar, so that the type bars mayv be removed.

In a typewriting machine; typevbars; a universal bar; a ribbon vibrator; a support for the vibrator; means engaging said support on two sides to hold the same against lateral displacement; an actuating connection :trom the universal bar to the vibrator; means for normally limiting the throw of the universal bar with said connection; and means for removing the holding means on one side of the vibrator support to permit the latter to be moved and the universal bar to have an abnormal'movement, so that the type bars may be removed.

In a typewriting machine; type bars; a universal bar; a ribbon vibrator; a support for the vibrator; means engaging said support on two vsides to hold the same against lateral displacement, the engaging means on one side of the support being a pivoted plate; an actuating connection from the universal bar to the vibrator; means for normally limiting the throw of the universal bar with Said connection; and means for swinging the holding plate on one side of the vibrator support to permit the latter to be moved and the universal bar to have an abnormal movement, so that the type bars may be removed.

In a typewriting machine; type bars; a universal bar; a ribbon vibrator; a support for the vibrator; means engaging said support on two sides to hold the same against lateral displacement; an actuating connection from the universal bar to the vibrator; means tor normally limiting the throw of the universal bar with said connection; and means for removing the holding means on one side of the vibrator support to permit the latter to be moved and the universal bar to have an abnormal movement, so that the type bars may be removed, said last-named means being adapted to engage and throw the universal bar to its abnormal type bar-releasing position.
37. ln a typewriting machine; type bars; a universal bar; a ribbon vibrator; a support for the vibrator; means engaging said support on two sides to hold the same against lateral displacement; an actuating connection from the universal bar to the vibrator; means for normally limiting the throw of the universal bar with said connection; means for removing the holding means on one side of the vibrator support to permit the latter to be moved and the universal bar to have an abnormal movement, so that the type bars may be removed; and a cam on said movable holding means adapted to engage and throw the universal bar to its abnormal type bar-releasing position.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of type-bars, a universal bar actuatedthereby, a ribbon vibrator, mechanism through which motion is transmitted from the universal bar to the vibrator, a stop to limit the throw ot the vibrator and thereby limiting the movement of the universal bar, and means to shitt said mechanism into position to permit the universal bar to move beyond said position at which it is arrested by the stop.
39. In a typewriting machine, the combination of type-bars, a universal bar actuated thereby, a ribbon vibrator, mechanism through which motion is transmitted from the universal bar to the vibrator, a stop to limit the throw of the vibrator and thereby limiting the movement of the universal bar, a support on which said mechanism is mounted, said support normally held stationary during the operation of said mechanism, and means to release said support and permit it to move into position to permit movement of the universal bar beyond said position at which it is arrested by the stop.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of type-bars, a universal bar actuated thereby, a ribbon vibrator, mechanism :tetonas through which motion is transmitted from the universal bar to the vibrator, a stop to limit the throw of the vibrator and thereby limiting the movement of the universal bar, a support on which said mechanism is mounted, and a key operable to swing said support into such position that the universal bar may be moved beyond said position at which it is arrested by the stel Y il. In a typewriting machine, the combination with pivoted type-bars, and a universal bar actuated thereby, said bar normally positioned to prevent removal oi" the type-bars from their tulcrum, of a ribbon vibrator, mechanism through which motion is transmitted from the universal bar to the vibrator, a stop to limit the throw of the vibrator and thereby limit the movement of the universal bar, a support on which said mechanism is mounted, and means to release said support and permit it to shift to a position such thatJ said stop will permit the universal bar to be moved beyond said limit, to such position that the type-bars are free to be removed from their ulerum.
42. ln a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a platen shit'table up and down to upper and lower case positions, of pivoted type-bars arranged to swing upwardly and rearwardly about their ulcrum to print at the platen, a universal bar moved rearwardly by the type-bars, a ribbon vibrator, connecting mechanism between the universal bar and said vibrator for actuating the latter, a support on which said mechanism is mounted, said support connected to shift up and down with the platen, a stop to limit the throw of the vibrator and also limiting the movement of the universal bar by the type-bars, said universal bar normally overlying a portion of the type-bars and preventing their removal from their fulcrum rod, and means whereby said support may be swung rearwardly from its normal position and thereby permit an abnormal rearward movement of the universal bar into position to release the typebars and permit their removal.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a ribbon vibrator, of type keys, means for actuating the vibrator from the type keys, said means comprising a toggle connected at one end with the vibrator and a universal bar to actuate the toggle, and means to vary the throw of the vibrator, said last-mentioned means comprising mechanism to shift the point of connection of the toggle with the vibrator into position to vary the angle between the toggle arms and thereby vary the extent of movement imparted to the vibrator by a given movement of the universal bar.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a universal bar, of a ribbon vibrator, mechanism between said bar and vibrator for actuating the latter from said bar, said mechanism comprising a vibrator lever and a toggle having the outer end of one arm connected to said lever, and means to swing said arm to adjust the point of connection of the toggle and levertoward and from the fulcrum of the lever While the other arm of the toggle remains at rest, thereby varying the throw of the vibrator by varying the angle between the toggle 10 arms and by varying the distance of said point of connection from the fulcrum of the lever.
