My invention relates to typewriting maehines and more :particularly to .the ribbon mechanism of such machines. v l
In visible writing machines employing 'a ribbon, it is common to :arrange the latter so that normally it -idoes not cover the printin int, .and to provide means to .cause :said ribbon to move automatically .to cover the printing point' at each printing operation and thereafter to return to normal position.
One object of my invention is to provide a construction wherein a ribben having a plurality vof fields of different characteristics may .at eachprinting operation bemoved to cover the printing point with any desired field of the said ribbon.
, Another object is to `provide meansto dis.- pe'nse at will with the erosswise feed ,of the yribbon in that class of machines employing a ribbon vibrator .and wherein the ribbon A has a crosswise and a lengthwise feed.
A further object is to provide means to enable .a parti-color ribbon to be employed in the last-named class of machines.
.Another object is to dispense at will, in a machine .of the lastnanied class, with lthe vibratony nieve-ment .of the ribbon.

To the above ends the invention consists `in the features ofconstruction, arrangements of parts `and combinations of devices, to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the .appended claims.

The eccentric-device hitherto employed, is aneccentric with a broadl workin-gface and which is fixedly attached tothe driving or power shaftv 50. From thev foregoing and from the drawings, it will be seen that the mechanism herein shown and described is capable of avya'rity'of uses, some of which may be stated as follows: When the link 63 and the crosswise feed mechanism are in operative relation to the ribbon vibrator, a plain one-color ribbon may be used, andas the keys are operated, the'ribbon will be fed not only longitudinally from one spool to the other but also progressively crosswise so as to utilize practically all of the surface of the ribbon, while at the same time and by the same means tleribbon vibrator is thrown to a normal positionso as to cover the'prmtmg dinarily a .two-color'ribbon would be used,
with the said devices in -working.position, only Where it maybe desired to do variegated or fancy colored work. Where I speak of the two-color ribbon,I do not wish to be limited always thereto, because for doing certainv fancy work, the ribbon may be provided with more than two dierent colors..
When -it may not be desired to utilize the ribbon irogressively transversely of its length, t e eccentric is switched out of'operative relationwith the strap of the linkv 63, but said link may be left in engagement in the normal or rearmost position with the'vibrator operating lever and byits reci rocations ,move the ribbon vibrator throng said lever a fixed or predetermined'distance. At this time -there may be in the machine either a one-color ribbon or a two-colorribbon. If a one-color ribbon is inuse,v it willv beutilized along the upper half or portion thereof, since the link 63 is adapted to throw the ribbon vibratorand ribbon the minimum dis-tance from the normal position of the vibrator. It will be understood of course that while the parts are in the positions last mentioned, a two-color ribbon may be substituted for the one-color ribbon and il" this two-color ribbon be, say, black and red, the black or upper portion will .be struck by the types w ien the link 631s connected with the vibrator, and said ribbon will be moved so that its lower or red, portion will be struck by the types when the link 93 is connected with the vibrator and the link' 63 disconnected therefrom, -it having been explainedheretofore that because of the relative positions of said links and the pivot or fulerum of the operating lever, said lever thrown different distances from a normal position. `Byanormal position I mean that by operating either of said` devices, the ribbon vibrator and ribbon start racti'cally always'from the same place, and) after moving to the printing vpo'int,they return always to substantially the same place from which they started so that the writing of the last letter is uncovered or exposed tothe view of the operator. The mechanism shown and vdescribed may be used with the novel'form of composite From this view it will be seen that said ribbon comprises different sections or'parts which maybe variously inked so as to provide different colors or different characteristics of links. For eX- lample, the middley portion of the ribbon marked c may constitute a considerable portion of the ribbon as a whole and may comprise simply one solid color, as black, blue,
v green, etc., copying ornon-copying, accordderstood that the major part of the work done with the typewriting machine is with a ribbon of one color. Occasionally, or -for billing or tabulating urposes, it is desired to use two colors, usual y black and red, andit is the custom now when such two-color work is to be done, to remove the one-color ribbon from the machine and substitute therefor the desired two-color ribbon. Then, when the end of the two-color work has been reached, the operator must remove the two-color ribbon andreplacein the machine the one-color ribbon. Fromthe ribbon shown at Fig. 7, it will be noted that I have 'provided' at each end portion of the ribbon two different stripes or fields of color, one of which may be black, as at a, and the other red, as at b; Between each end of the one-color middle portion c and the two-color portions a, b, I prefer to leave the ribbon blank or white,- as at d, or treat it so that no impression can be taken therefrom. Various c anges in the relations, arrangements and construction of the parts may be effected and parts -of my invention may' be used without other parts, all without departing from thespirit and scopefof the invention.
