This invention relates to a power operated carriage return mechanism particularly adapted for use in power driven typewr1ting machines and which may be used to return the carriage from any desired point to the beginning of a line, except when the carriage is less than approximately ten spaces trom the starting point of the new line. As soon as the carriage contacts with the usual margin stop, the power operated mechanism is disconnected from the carriage and held in such inoperative position until the carriage return key is again operated. Provision is also made whereby the motor will be started by a depression of the carriage return key. it it is not already in operation.

Accordingly there is shown a portion of themain frame A, a platen carriage B having the usual platen U mounted therein, a line space lever D, a margin stop rack E, and marginstop F. So tar as the present invention 1s concerned, these parts may be of any old or desired construction.
Supported on the base 1 is a motor mechanism comprising a motor M having a support N mounted in bearings O and normallypositioned by a plurality of adjustable springs P. In this manner the motor is supported so that practically no weight comes upon the bearings O and the noise of operation is very greatly reduced. The shaft of the niotor through a resiliently driven member 2 which is more clearly shown and described in my application Serial No. 243,063 filed Dec. 28, 1927, drives a shaft 3 having a worm. 4.- thereon which meshes with a worm gear 15 mounted on a shaft 6. A collar 7 which is rigid with the worm gear has a pin-8 so positioned as to engage a short pin 9 which projects radially from a collar 10 slidably mounted on the shaft 6 and rigid with one element 11 of a clutch mechanism. The other element 12 of the clutch mechanism is also rotatably mounted on the shaft 6 and is rigid with a pinion 13 which meshes with a gear 1-1 pivotally mounted on a boss 15 extend ing inwardly from the rear of the main frame A. The gear 14- is in mesh with the gear 16 rigidly connected with a spring drum containing a spring 17, both drum and gear being mounted to rotate on a supporting pivot 18. Connected tothe spring drum is a tape 17', the free end of which is attached to a lever arm 19 mounted on the lower end of The carriage return key or lever is pivotally mounted to turn about an axis 26 and when depressed engages a cushion spring 27 mounted in abloc'k 28. A projection 29 on the lower side.of the key lever engages this block to limit the return movement of the lever under the influence of a spring, not shown. This key lever also has a rearward connection adapted to operate a universal bar 30 which is connected to mechanism for starting the motor as shown in my application mentioned above. Since the operation of the carriage return mechanism is entirely independent of the particular type of mo tor and functions the same whether the mo tor is constantl running or whether it is started by the epression of the key, it has been thought unnecessary to illustrate the starting mechanism in this particular case.
The key lever 25 is also connected by a link 31 to one arm 32 of a bell crank lever which is pivotally mounted at 33 on a bracket 34 a U-shaped bracket G which is attached to carried by the main frame. This bell crank lever lies in a horizontal plane and the other arm 35 thereof is connected by a link 36 to the vertical arm 37 of a bell crank lever which lies in the vertical plane and has a horizontal arm 38. At the rear of the machine there is mounted a vertical lever 39 which is supported to turn about a transverse axis 40 in a bracket which is pivoted for movement about a fore and aft axis 41. The lower end of this lever 39 is bent as shown at 41 and extends through a cut-out in the rear frame plate A into a recess 42 in the end of the arm 38 of the bell crank lever above described.
When the lower end of the-lever 39 is in this position, it is held by the arm 38 which acts as a latch. At this time the end of the lever 39 presses against an arm 43 which is mounted to slide on a screw 44 and is pivotally connected at 45 to one arm 46'of a horizontally arranged bell crank lever pivoted at 47 on the base plate 1. The other arm 48 of this bell crank lever engages the lower end of a vertical lever 49 which is ivoted at 50 to a standard rising from the plate. The upper end of thislever 49 engages the movable clutch member 11 and is drawn by the spring 51 in a direction to close the clutch. However, when the lever 39 is in the posiw tion shown in Figure 3, the inner end of the same through the connections just described holds the lever 49 in such position that the glitch members are disengaged as shown in re 1. as n operation, assuming the parts to be in the I" "'re 1 position, the latch 38 W111 be rele upon depression of the carriage return key 25, the nose of the latch will be moved upwardly above the plane of the foot 5 41' of the control lever 39, and the motor will be started.
The spring 51 will then move the sl de arm 43 towards the right as viewed in Fig. l, or towards the left as viewed in Fig. 3.
This movement of the slide arm 43 swings the control lever 39 on its axis 41, thereby moving the foot 41' to the left, as viewed in Fig. 3, to a position directly in rear of a roller 56 on a stop post 56 fixed to the base 1 of the frame.
When the latch 38 was released, the spring 51 also functioned to engage the clutch members 11 and 12 which e ected a line spacing operation and a carriage return movement in sequence, through the medium of the spring drum and tape 17'.
As the carriage in its return movement, approaches its extreme right hand position, a roller 52 on the carriage engages the shoe 53 of the control lever 39 and causes the upper portion of said lever to flex rearwardly, the foot 41' at this time bei held against forward movement by the ro er 56 of the stop post 56.
65 The continued or extreme return movement. of the carriage results in the adjustable screw 2 of the margin stop F the rearwardlv extending offset end or shoulder 54 which is fixed to the upper end of the control lever 39 and thereby swinging said lever on its axis 41 and movingthe foot 41 towards the left as viewed in Fig. 1 and away from the stop post 56.
The roller 56 has rolling contact with the lower end of the control lever 39 du said movement of the foot to the left, an consequently frictional resistance is reduced to a mimmum.
This movement of the control lever 39 results in the returning of the slide arm 43 to its initial position the disengagement of the clutch members 11, 12, and the re-engagement of the latch 38 with the foot 41'.
Inasmuch as the roller 52 is still with the shoe 53, it follows that as a result of the previously described flexing of the upper portion of the control lever 39 and the subsequent disengagement of the foot 41' from the stop roller 56 the lower ion of the lever will be swung upon its axis40 causingthe foot 41' to be moved forwardly to a position on the left of the stop post 56 as viewed in Fig. 1.
Therefore, in this position of the parts, the foot 41' cannot be moved to the'left as viewed in Fig. 3 by reason of said post preventing such movement.
Consequently the clutch cannot be re-engaged upon depression of the carriage return key 25 until said foot 41' has been moved rearward] to its initial ition viz, at a point to the le of but slightiyin It is therefore necessary to feed the carriage in letter space direction by operation of the usual spacing bar, for a distance of several spaces, or until the roller 52 has been moved out of engagement with the shoe 53. The control lever 39 will then swing on its axis 40 by its inherent balance and position the foot 41 to the left of the stop post 56 and slightl in rear thereof, whereby upon depression 0 the carriage return key 25 the complete cycle of operations, as above described, will be repeated.
I claim asmy invention:
1. A power operated carriage return mechanism for typewriting machines comprisin a source of power, a train of connections tween said source of power and the carriage which includes a clutch mechanism, means tending normally to close said clutch mechanism, a latch restraining the operation of said means, key operated connections for moving said latch to releasing position, and a member moved in one direction by the carriage for opening the clutch irrespective of the position of the latch, and in another direction to prevent a second closing of the clutch until the rear of the stop post llll carriage has advanced a predetermined distance.
2.. In a power operated carriage return echanism for typewriting machines, the combination with a carriage, of a power shaft, connections including a normally open clutch between'the shaft and the carriage for returning the latter, means tending to normally close the clutch, a latch cooperating with said clutch closing means for normally'retaining said means against movement, means for releasing said latch to render said clutch closing means operative, and a control lever di rectly engageable by the carriage during its return movement and cooperating with the clutch closing means to open said clutch.

7. In a power operated carriage return mechanism for typewriting machines, the
