Description

Patented Dec. 15, 193 1 SLISON -DJWRIGHT, 0F CLEVELAND I-IEiGHTS, OHIO .coKE rLAirr APPARATUS Application filed vNovember 7, (1927. Serial No. 231,665.
invention relates generally to apparatus or machinery or devices used on, or in connection or association with coke plants and;
more particularly topmovahle apparatus or 1 machinery or devices performing a plurality of functions while thecsame remains in one position and still more particularly to chargmgdevices for .coke ovens carrylng means adapted to operate thedoors of. coke ovens. I '10 The main object of my inventionis a sim-' ple, inexpensive, easily operable, easily'installable, convenient, and eflicient meansv to operatedoors onicoke ovens or otherelements o'rjdevi'oes orapparatus associated with coke 15 plants and to arrange'or construct or arrange and construct these means'in such a manner that a plurality'of diverse functions oroperations can be performed by these means. Othor objects will appear, or become apparent or obvious, or willsuggest themselves during the description of the pparatus shown in the ac companying drawings. I
Various elements or apparatus or devices, movable and/or movabl y operable, are neces sary in coke plants; for instance :a charging device is movable into definite positions in relation to the coke ovens to charge fresh coal into the ovens; doors are provided on each end of! the ovens and are adapted to be N opened so that the cokecan be removed from the same and tobe closed during the coking process; a device is provided at onejendof'the ovens to open .and to close-the doors at'thls one end; a device is provided atthe other end of the ovens to open and vto close the doors at this other end other elements, operable in (lividually or conjointlyfare alsofound in or on or anoundcoke plants. Y My invention aims to reduce the'number of'the plantelementoperating devices toa minimum and. to arrange these devices in sueha manner that aminimum of operators are required cooperate the. coke plant. For instance in the prior art, one operator is required to opera-tethe oven charging device, another operator to operate the doors on one end-of the ovens, and another operator to operate the doors on the other end of the ovens. My invention permits of one'operator to operate the charging deviceas well as both of the door operating means and he can do that V easily and conveniently since the doors of'any one of theovens'are operated only Whilethe charging device is over this one oven'orat least while-the same can remain over this one oven. The operat ortravels with the charg= ing device and moves the same into a definite position overthe ovenand can easily and conveniently operate and control the door oper ating means while he is in that position therefore, my invention eliminates door op erating means as well as attention to the same at each end of the ovens in this particular instance. V a i Othereliminations of devices as well as of attentions to the same or to otlier devices can be provided in manners similar to the one ju st explained. i r Y v For the purpose of illustration, but not limitation, I have embodied my invention in one possible certain arrangement and structure and have shown this embodiment in the accompanying drawings although I am aware that my invention can be applied or embodied in other elements or devices or in other arrangements of elements or devices associated with coke plants.
In the accompanying drawings 3 Fig. 1 is a plan view of'a portion of acoke plant with an oven charging device embodying features of my invention movable longitudinally on the top of the same and into definite charging positions over the ovens and carrying door operatingmeans. for the doors on each end of the ovens.
"' Fig. 2 is a'side'view of Fig. 1, partly in section, and shows more clearly the vertical relations between the elements.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the views. I The. coke plant A has the usual plurality of coke ovens 10, each provided with two charging openings 11 in the top thereof in the present instance and the vertically slidable doors 12 on one end of the ovens and the vertically slidable doors 13 on the other end thereof and the rails ortrack 14 running longitudinally on the top of the plant and traversely over the ovens. i v The charging device 13 has the track'wheels 15 rollable on the track 14 and the fresh coal carrying hoppers C spaced so that the spouts 16 thereof come directly over the corresponding ones of the openings 11 when the device B is moved into a definite position so that the coal in the hoppers can be charged into the ovens.
A platform 17 is provided on each end of the device B and each platform carries a drum 18 and gear reductions means operated in the present instance by the electric motor D individually controlled by the control elements E on either one of the operators plat forms 19.
The framing 20 extends outwardly from each end of the'device B and each supports the bearings 21 in which the shaft 22 is journaled and also supports the bearings 23 in which the shaft 2% is journaled. The sheaves 25 and 26 are mounted on the corresponding ones of the shafts 22 and 2st and in alignment with each other and with the drums 18.
Each of the flexible cables 27 passes over the corresponding ones of the sheaves and has one end thereof windable on the corresponding one of the drums and the other end thereof secured to the corresponding one of the doors 12 or 13.
A feature of the present inventionis to provide convenience for an operator to increase his efficiency and thereby increase the output of the device and avoid accidents.
The platforms 19 are placed comparatively low on the device B so that the same are easily accessible for an operator without requiring him to climb up to high parts of the same and an operator can easily step onto the same and from the same from the top of the plant A and can easily move from his position on a platform to attend to other matters such as hooking the cables onto the doors, or uncovering the openings 11 and can easily move from the top of the plant to the platform.
Two control means are provided on the platform so that an operator can control both door operating mechanisms from different parts of the platform.
The inner and sloping walls of the containers C provide a passage way between the two platforms so that an operator can change his position from one platform to the other without leaving the device 13. These sloping walls also provide a clear or at least a convenient view for an operator in both directions of movement of the device B irrespective of which platform the operator is on or even if only one platform is provided. The low location of the platform, opposite the opening formed by the sloping walls, also aids in the operators clear view.
These features provide a very easy and convenient control means for the device B.
As to operation lVhen the coking process is completed in one of the ovens, the operator moves the charging device B with fresh coal in the hoppers thereof longitudinally on the rails on the top of the plant until the spouts 16 thereof register with the openings 11 for that one oven and rests the device in that definite position. Then operates the control elements E either individually or conjointly and thereby starts the rotation of either one or of both of the motors D in one direction and thereby rotates the drums and winds the cable thereon and thereby raises the doors and opens each end of the oven whereupon the coke is pushed out of the oven through the now open ends. The same operator then again operates the control elements E and thereby again starts the rotation of the motor but in the opposite direction and thereby rotates the drums and unwinds the cables from the same and therebylowers the doors and closes both ends of the oven. The same operator then opens the gates on the spouts 16 and on the openings 11 and charges the coal in the hoppers into the oven and then closes the gates mentioned. All of these operations are performed by one operator and while the chargingdevice remains in one position. The operator then moves the charging device to a station to fill the hoppers thereof with fresh coal and is then ready to again move the same into a new position over another one of the ovens in which the coking process has been completed and repeats the operations as described.
In a manner similarto the above, other associated operations can be combined to eliminate operating mechanism or operators attention. y
I am aware that changes and modifications can be made in the structure and in the arrangement of elements shown and described and that my invention is applicable to coke plant elements other than the one shown and described; therefore, without limiting myself to the precise structure and arrangement of elements as shown and described nor to the precise application of my invention as shown and described.
I claim v A coke plant including a coking ,oven having a movable door on each end thereof and a device movable on the plant and into a position above said doors and including two hoppers with a space between the same, a platform extending beyond each side ofsaid hoppers, an individualdoor operating means for each of said doors, and an individually operable control means for each of said door operating means on each of theextending parts'of said platform and opposite said space. V
In testimony of the foregoing I aflix my signature.
