APPARATUS FOR APPLYING ETCHED TUBES IN INTAGLIO PRINTING MACHINES Filed Sept. 7.- 1928 FIGJ. a
IN GNT Q W h m/14 M 4.4
?atented Dec. 8, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE KARL ALBRECHT, OF GEISENHEIM-ON-THE-RHINE, GERMANY, ASSIGNQR TO MASCHI- N ENFABRIK JOHANNISBERG GESELLSCHAFT MIT BESCHRANKTER HAFTUNG, GEISENHEIM-ON-THE-RHINE, GERMANY avoid damaging APPARATUSIOR APPLYING ETCHED TUBES IN INTAGLIO PRINTING MACHINES Application filed September 7, 1928, Serial No.
In rotary intaglio printing machines use is frequently made as carriers for the etchings,-of copper tubes or coppered tubes of aluminum, iron, brass or the like. For applying these tubes to the form cylinder cores the latter are either taken out of the machine or the fixing takes place in the machine. If the form cylinder core remains in the 'working bearings for this operation, an aperture is provided in the side framework of the machine, through which aperture the tube can be slid over the core. The bearing of the form cylinder core or an intermediate sleeve between the latter and the side portion is removed on this side.
The sliding on of the polished and etched copper tube through the aperture requires however a definite skill and care on the part of the operator. It is not always possible to and consequently rendering the images on the'copper tubes useless.
The invention enables the tubes to be eas ily and reliably applied without damage or jamming.
The drawings illustrate the invention by wav of example,
Figure 1 representing a longitudinal section thru an apparatus according to the invention and Figure 2 a front view according to Fig.
The etched copper tube 0 has to be.applie d to the form cylinder core d. The latter is mounted with its bearing journal in the bearing 6, which rests in the support 6, which is slidable in guides s of the machine framing a in a vertical direction In order to affix the tube 0, the bearing support t is low-- cred into the position shown in the drawings, after'the form cylinder core-has been secured on the opposite side against dropping down. The bearing-re itself remains on 1n alinement from plurality of 304,484, and in Germany September 27, 1927.
other. The discs have such a diameter that the etched tube a to be fixed on, is accurately guided in the direction of the axis of the form cylinder core 03 and can he slid on to the latter without jamming. In order to facilitate the sliding of the tube a on to the guiding discs 6 b the latter are made suitably conical or ball-shaped at their front edges.
In place of the guiding discs use may naturally also be made of a guiding cylinder or guiding cross-piece or the like, which enable the tube to be applied to be reliably guided in the direction of the axis of the form cylinder and for this purpose must be equal or somewhat smaller in diameter than the form cylinder core 03.
The device can be easily adapted to machines already existant. It is merely necessary that the bearing journal u shall be provided with the corresponding screw thread. In place of the latter use may also be made of any other desired means of securing, for instance a bayonet joint or the like. In many cases it will also be 'suflicient simply to insert the guiding device in a bore of the bearing journal without any specific securing means.
What I claim is In a printing press, a form cylinder core, a shaft supporting said core having an axial cavity, a column having a reduced extremity removably fitted in the cavity and extending the terminal of the shaft, said column being stationary with and supported solely in the cavity of said shaft, a guide discs fixed stationary on the column, and a form cylinder slidable over the guide discs.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
KARL ALBRECHT.
the bearing journal u of the form cylinder core d. The bearing journal at is provided with a bore 0 and the screw thread to, into which a screw bolt m can. be screwed. The latter carries the guiding device according to the invention, which consists of a column a, on which two or more guiding discs 6 6 are provided at a little distance from one a
