Patented Dec. 8, 1931 UNITED STATES Parent I OFFICE" SYLVESTER A. JOHNSON, OF NORTH PROVIDENCE, RHOLDE ISLAND ASSIGNOR TO SPEIDEL 3110s., OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, A FIRM COMPOSED F ALBERT E. R. SPEIDEL AND EDWIN F. 1M. SPEIDEL, BOTH. OF GRANSTON, RHODE ISLAND EXT NSION lnnvion Application filed May 31, 1930. Serial No; 458,841.
may be formed of amaterial different from the material of the foldable sections in order that resiliency may be better retained.
A further object of this invention is to provide a latch member which may be formed of sheet stock and mounted upon the hinge means between two sections to hold the same in place. v
A further object of this invention is the provision of means whereby a two-part bracelet with an extension device hinged to one part may be detachably connected to the other part so that a watch with bracelet parts extending from either side thereof may be laid fiat upon a card, and the extension device which is secured to one end of one part of the bracelet may be easily assembled by a retail merchant by simple manual manipulation to attach the end of the other part of the bracelet to the extension device.
With these and other objects and advantageous features in View, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more particularly set forth 2 in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a watch with a twopart bracelet attached thereto, and an extension device at the end of one of the bracelet parts;
Fig. 2 is a bottom view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the extension de vice in unfolded position;
Fig. 4c is a section through line ti of Figure 3;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the latch member; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view through the extension device in folded position, showing the latch member in engaging position.
It is found desirable by watch manufacturers to mount their watches with bracelets attached thereto on a card, and it is also found desirable to use in connection with such a bracelet an extension device whereby the 7 watch may be removed from'the wrist by passing the same over the hand Without detachment of any of its parts. The watch manufacturer has heretofore not been 'able to use an extension device on his bracelet by reason ,ofthe same being permanently attached at both of its'ends to the bracelet in which it was assembled. This invention'overcomes this diiiicultyso that the Watchmanufacturer may use an extension device in the bracelet assembly by providing a detachable connection at one end of the extension device for engaging one end of a bracelet part so that the bracelet Withwatch assembled may lie-fiat upon a'card and the jeweler when the same is soldinay assemble the bracelet and ex tension device by a simple manual manipulalustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous plished.
results may be accom- WVith referenceto the drawings, 10 designates a wrist Watch and 11 a link bracelet,
parts of which are secured at each side of therwatch by means of end hooks 12. An extension. device 13 isconnected-to the end link 14 of one part ofthe bracelet and consists of a channel section 15 and flanged sections 16 and 17 hingedly connected to each other and to the section 15 by means of pivot pins 18 and19,- the section 17 being secured to the end link 14 by means of a pivot pin 20. I
On the pivot pin 18 there is mounted a latch member 21 consisting of asheet metal bent to form an eye 22 for mounting the same on the pivot pin 18 in the slot 27 formed in the section 16130 permit the same to move about its hinge mounting 18 without inter ference of the latchmember. The material at one side-of the eye is doubled back upon itself as at 23 and outwardly curved as at 2 1 to form a nose 25. to snap over the pin and releasably hold the sections in folded position, while the body portion 26 of the latch extends on the opposite side of the eye 22 and prevents movement in one direction of the eye about the pin 18 on which the'latch is mounted.
At the end of the section 15 to which thebracelet is connected there is mounted an endways movable pin 28 having an enlarge ment or" washer 29' mounted thereon, with a I spring-3O encirclingthe pin- 28 and acting be tween the sidewall 31-of the section, and. the washer 29 tending to move the washer into enga ement with the wall 32. The end "link 36 one bracelet part has its side walls 33 and 34 pierced as at 37 and '38 to receive the" pin 28. The watch, bracelet and extension device are mounted one card in theconnected relation. shown in Figure 1, and the retail merchantor jeweler upon: selling the same assembles the extension device and the link 36 by first inserting in the opening 37 in the side wall 33' over one end of the pin. 28 and then pressing the pin inwardly as indicated by arrow 35, sliding the other wall 34 in-place and tocause its opening 38 in position, relaxing the pressure at 35 to permit the pin 28- to move by actionof the spring 30 into the opening and secure thesame in position. For detachment, the operation of assembly is reversed.
While- I have described certain construction forms which embody the principles of my invention, it is obvious that other desired changes in arrangement may beinade within thespi-rit and the scope of the invention as defined in the; appended! claims.
I claim: 1-. An extension device comprising a plurality ofsections, hinge means for-connecting said sectionstogether tofold one on another, a separator resilient member having a latch portion: extending therefrom mounted onthe hinge means between two sections forresilientlyengaging a part carried by another 9- section for holding said sections in folded position.
2. extension device comprising a p111;- ralityofsections, pivot pins for hinging said sections together tofold one on another, a
separate resilient member having a portion embracing the pivot pi-nbetweentwo sections and with a latch: portion extending therefrom forresiliently engaging a part carried by another section holding said sections in folded position.
An extension device comprising a p111.- rality of sections pivot pins for hingingsaid sections together to fold one on-another, a. separate resilient latch member having: an
69? eyetozen'gage one of said pivot pins tomount the same thereon, and a; resilient nose-portion to sn'ap: overa' pin carried by another-section for holding the sectionsin folded position.
4;:An extension device'comprising a plurality of sections, pivot-pins for hinging' saidsections together to fold one on another, a separate resilient latch member having an eye to engage one of said pivot pins to mount the same thereon, and a portion doubled back on said eye and curved away therefrom to form a resilient nose portion 'to snap over a pin carried by another section for holding thesections in folded position.
5. Am: extension device comprising a plurailty'of sections,.pivotpins forhinging-said sections. together to fold one on: another, a separate resilient latch member having an eyc t'o-en'gage one of said pivot pins to mount the same thereon, a resilent nose portion to snap'over' a pin carried by another section for holding the sections in folded position, and an extension on the opposite side of said eye to limit movement thereof about the pin in: one direction.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature. 85
