Briefly, such objects are achieved in an illustrative form of the invention herein Idisclosed, byproviding' a body in which is car-l ried a centrally disposed transverse shaft which pivotally connects two'card holdei sections. Thebody of the device appears at 10 and includes two sides walls 11, an end wall.'12, and another end wall 13. In transverse alinement, and intermediately of the ends of the holder,-the sidewalls 11 are provided with 7 slots 14 in which is mounted'a transverse shaft 15 having one end projected; slightly laterally of asidezwall as shown in Figure 3. These rods are fixed in the end wall 18 of the body and are supported by vertical extensions, at their inner ends, mounted in any suitable manner in the floor of the body 10. -Coil springs 28 encircle the horizontal run of these rods between the end 25 of the holder section 24 and the adjacent end wall 13 of the body. i
As appears in Figure 2, it will be seen that the center shaft 15 lies lower than the end shaft 23 and horizontal guides 27. Thus, with the springs 28 exerting a push force on the end of'the section 24' the tendency is to keep the hinged sections 19, 24, down as the shaft 15 is -below center. This keeps the posts and closure elements 26 as closed loops. If now, the lever 17 is pressed down to raise the shaft 15 above dead center the springs exert a force that will open the 'loops'by separating the posts and closure elements, because the two sections 19, 24 tilt upwardly at their hinged connection to the bodily raisable'sliaft 15. These springs 28 areconeealed' by a cover plate 29 shown in Fi ure 2.
' "Figure 5 a modification of the spring structure is illustrated in which a single springes' is rovided. The spring is, in t iis case, a pu 'l'spring', and connects underneath the section'24, between the end wall a;nd a bracket or anchor 30. The guide rods 27 are retained for the sliding move- "ment of the flange 25. This form may be preferred as it'is simpler and permits use of a shorter body. Therefore, it has the advantage of compactness.
I'Irpractice, loose leafindex cards or leaflets are stored on the holder posts 20 of the section 19. In the normal position of the parts as shown in the full lines in Figure 2, the cards maybe transferred across the loops formed by the closure elements 26 to the other section 24 for the purpose of turning up any selected card. If it is now desired temporarily, to remove said card from the stack, the user presses down on the hand lever 17 which bodily raises the'shaft 15 to tilt the hinged inner ends ofthe holder sections upwardly totle dotted'line showing in Figure 2,'which then causes the posts and closure elements to separate in the manner indicated, thus permitting removal of said selected card. The

From this det'ailed' disclosure it must now bereadily appreciated that an improved 7 structure for a ear-d index reference holder has been provided, which achieves all of the desirable objects heretofore recited.
It is the intention to cover all such immaterial changes and modifications of the illustrative forms of the structure herein shown, as do not depart from the spirit and scope of my invention, as is indicated by the definitions contained in the appended claims.
What I claim is: v
1. In a file holder, a body, a first holder sec tion in the body provided with posts to hold a loose leaf card pack, a second holder sec tion in the body provided with closure elements for the posts, a shaft pivotally connecting the two'sections, and means for bodily raising and lowering the shaft and ad j acent ends of the connected sections to open or close the closure elements relative to the posts.
2. In a file holder, a body, a first holder section in the body provided with posts to hold a loose leaf card pack, a second holder section in the body provided with closure elements for the posts, a shaft pivotally connecting the two sections, and a lever pivotally mounted on the body and connected to said shaft for bodily raising the same to cause the closure elements to open relative to the posts.
3. In a file holder, a body, a first holder section in the body provided with posts to hold a loose leaf cardpack, a second holder section in the body provided with closure ele ments for the posts, a shaft-pivotally connecting the two sections, a lever on the body and connected to the shaft to raise the same for opening the closure elements relative to the posts, and yielding means for maintaining the closure elements in open position.

In a file holder, a body, a shaft arranged centrally across the body, a first holder section having its outer end pivotally connected to one end of the body, a second holder section, said sections having adjacent inner ends connected to said shaft, cooperative posts and closure elements on the sections to form loops for, carrying loose leaves which may be transferred from one section to the. other, means-pivotally carried outside the body for raising the shaft and inner adjacent ends of the sections to open the closure elements, and means to retain the closure elements in open position. i
5. In a file holder, a body, hingedly connected holder sectionsmounted therein, separable file holder posts and closure elements on the holder sections, and lover means carried on the body and having connection with the sections tilting the inner adjacent ends of the said sections upwardly to separate the posts and closure elements.
6. In a file holder, a body, file holder sections having their inner adjacent ends hingedly connected together and mounted on the body, cooperable file holder posts and closure elements on the said sections, lever means carried on the body and having connection with the sections for. tilting the said sections upwardly at their hinged connection to separate the postsv and closure elements, and means exerting a force to keep the closure elements in open position.
7. In a file holder, a body, a pair of file holder sections having their. inner adjacent ends hingedly connected together at the center of the'body, one of said sections having an end pivotally connected to an end of the body, the other section having anend carried in the body for sliding movement, cooperable and separable leaf-retainer elements on the sections, means to raise the hinge connection between the sections to tilt said sections for separating the retainer elements, said hinge comprising an over dead center lock, and yielding means for holding the hinge over dead center. v
8. In a file holder, a body having end walls and side Walls, the latterhaving oppositely arranged slots formed therein, a cross shaft journaled in said slots, a pair of holder sections in the body and having adjacent inner ends connected to the shaft, cooperating posts and closure-elements therefor on the said sections, a lever on a side wall of the body and connected to an end of the shaft to raise the same in the slots to tilt the holder sections and thereby open the closure elements relative to the posts, and spring means down movement with the adjoining ends of said sections to open or close the closure elements relative to the posts, and means carried by the body for raising or lowering the shaft.
