UNITED sTATEs PATENT OEEIoE.
JAMES RUSSELL, OF BRIDPO RT, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-POUNDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 183,421, dated October 17, 1876; application filed April 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES RUSSELL, of Bridport, in the county of Addison and State of Vermont, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Washers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a sectional view of my improvement in washers, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
This invention has relation to that class of clothes-'pounders which are operated by pressure upon the clothes to produce suction; and it consists in the employment of a handle secured to the center of the pressure plate by a screw, and braced above by arms, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the washer-head, and B the handle, of sufficient length to operate it with facility. 0 represents the inverted cups by which the suction is produced. The lower ends or open mouths of these cups are in the same plane usually, and connected by a surface-plate, D, by means of which pressure is made on the clothes. E represents a screw secured to the center of the plate D, and serving for the attachment of the lower end of the handle B after this has been inserted through its upper bearing a. F F indicate bars or arms running from the upper or closed ends of the several cups to the center,'where they are joined together, in this manner firmly connecting the cups at the top, the plate D connecting them at the bottom of the washerhead. Through the bridge formed by the joined bars F, at the center, is made an opening, a, which serves as the upper bearing of the handle above mentioned.
WhatIclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A handle, B, secured to the center of the pressure-plate D by means of the screw E, and braced above by the arms F, as shown and described.
' In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES RUSSELL. Witnesses:
