SAFETY MEANS FOR GAS APPARATUS Filed Jan. 22, 1930 avwemtoz Hans F. Sorensen 32x elf town;
(Ema/ 1 4,
Patented Dec. 1, 1931 UNITED STATES HANS P. SORENSEN, OF PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK SAFETY MEANS FOR GAS APPARATUS Application filed January 22, 1930. Serial No. 422,651.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety means for gas apparatus, gas stoves, and the like; and it has been an object of this invention to provide a device, which, when applied and properly connected to a gas apparatus, will automatically light the gas, when the latter is turned on, thereby guarding against the waste of gas, and deplorable accidents occurring, when people, and especially children, through mistake or inadvertence happen to open the gas jets by turning the gas-cocks, or when they open for the gas but forget to apply the pilot.
This device, while embodying the principles of my invention in a general manner, as illustrated herein, may, however, be subject to minor modifications.
As the construction of the device is comparatively simple the cost of manufacturing should be proportionately low; thereby assuring, it is thought, a great market for this invention.
it-h the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts, hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming parts of this specification, and in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all views, and
in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view, showing part of a gas stove with my device attached; Figure 2 is a front elevational View of same, while Figures 3, 4 and 5 are detail views closely illustrating the difierent parts of my device.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, indicates a gas apparatus, which is connected to a feeding gas pipe 11 by means of the tubes 12; the flow of gas being as usually controlled by the gas-cocks 13, while a follows: I
pilot button 14; serves to light said gas.
To the said gas pipe 11 is attached in a i pivotal manner a member, or flat oblong bar,
15'; the said bar being connected by means of hinges 16 to clamps 17, which in turn engage the said pipe 11. A
'On top of the said bar are arranged a number of raised portions,,or parts, 18, the said portions having one side, or surface, formed as an acclivity 19, and the opposite side, or surface, as a declivity 20; the portions 18 may be attached to the said bar in any suitable manner, or may be formed integral there with. V The device or part of it may be made of all metal or of any suitable material.
Below the said bar is loosely. arranged a coiled spring 21 made to convey any pressure exerted upon the said bar to the pilot; the said spring may be wound around the pilot, and project above the latter, or it maybe formed integrally with a metal plate suitable to be fastened to the pilot in Figure 5.
A transversely positioned member 22, terminating. atone end in bifurcated sections 23, is turnably attached to the neck of a gascock, the said member having the inner surfaces of the said bifurcated sections shaped to fit the said neck, and is ustably attached to the latter by means of a screw and wing-nut button, as shown "arrangement 24. However, the shape of the said member, and the manner of attaching and regulatingit may well be varied."
The member 22 is atthe' end opposite the said bifurcated sections formed with an angular downwardly projecting sectionj25; a pointer, 26 is pivotally connected to the lower end 'of the section 25 in such a manner that the said pointer will collapse or fold in one ,direction'only. A spring 27 is connecting the section 25 to the pointer 26 inorder to urge the two parts into alignment, as shown in Fi'gures'2and 3.
The operation of the device is briefly as Upon turning the gas-cock in order to open for the gas, the pointer 26-0f the member-'22 will simultaneously ascend the acclivity 19, and thereby exert a pressure upon the bar 15, which pressure by way of the spring 21 will be relayed to the pilot-button, causing the pilot to operate and light the gas. When the gas-cock with the member 22 has traveled a certain distance, of an imaginary circle, the pointer 26 of the member 22 will descend the declivity 20, thereby relieving the pressure upon the bar 15 and consequently discontinue the operation of the pilot.
In closing the gas by a turning movement in the opposite direction the pointer 26 will automatically and gradually collapse upon striking the sloping surface of the declivity 20, as shown in Figure 4, thereby permitting the member 22 and the gas-cock to travel back to the original or closed position without ex pressure upon the bar or actuatingv erting any the pilot.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, as shown, within the scope of the appended claims, without de arting the spirit of the invention, and do not therefore desire to limit myself to the con- .struction and arrangement shown and described herein.
- What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A device of the class described, comprising an oblong bar, means for pivotally engaging said bar to a gas pipe, a plurality of elevations arranged upon the top of said bar, the said elevations being formed with one surface gradually ascending'and the other surface steeply descending, means for establishing contact between said bar and a. pilot, a plurality of pressure-exerting members adjustably attached to a corresponding number of gas-cocks for the purpose of actuating said bar by means of the said elevations, the said members each comprising a bifurcated neckportion for connection with a as-cock, a downwardly extending portion ormed upon one side of said neckportion and integral therewith, a hinged portion connected to said downwardly extending portion and adapted to fold in one direction only, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' 2, A- device of the class described, comprisportion formed upon one side of said neckportion and integral therewith, a hinged portion connected to said downwardly extending portion and adapted to fold in one direction only, and a spring for keeping said hinged portion normally in elongation of the said downwardly extending neckportion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Signed at Port Chester in the county of Westchester and State of New York, this 23rd day of December, A. D. 1929.
