To all 'whomy t may concern 1 Be it known that I', FREDERICK A. BERG MAN, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Merrick, county 'of Nassau and State of New York, have invented 'certain vnew and useful Improvements in Oil Cups,
adjusted positions in such a4 manner as to f prevent displacement of the setting ofthe needle valve by vibration or by any accidental blows.
Another object is to so construct the means for adjusting the valve that any desired number of adjustments 'can be had and which adjustments can be arranged toproduce an accurate predetermined rate o f feed.
A further object is to provide a new and improved constructionof anv automatic closure for the lling hole of the oil cup.
For the accomplishment of these and such further objects as will hereinafter beapparent to those skilled in the art to which this appertains, the invention consists in the construction, combination andv 'arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is showna preferredk embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and vmodifications may be resorted to which fall 'within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.4

The upper end of the sleeve 34 is recessed as` at 37 to receive a small washer 88 fixed to llO the valve stem 19, which serves to retain the sleeve 34 upon the valve stem. washer 39 is secured upon the valve stem -1'9 within the cylindrical body 11 and acts as an abutment for one end of a spring 40, encircling the valve stem and having its other end in contact with the under face of cover 16, thus serving to normally urge the valve toward its seat and also to hold the recess 36 of the arm 35 in engagement with a pin 33 when the valve has been adjusted to any of its open positions.
`If desired, a slot may be 'cut into the side wall of the body portion 11 to receive a piece of transparent material 41 Vso as to provide -an inspection window and I prefer to use for this purpose one of 'the synthetic Compositions of m'atte'r such as are used for electrical insulation's but which `are now 'constructed iin such a manner as to be transparent, impervious to oil, and are not i as frangible as glass. The manner of securing this transparent material may obviously be varied 'as desired as long as oil tight joints are secured. Likewise the form of the springs and their points of support vmay be varied and also the number and'heights of the pins 33.
The operation of the device is as follows, if it is desired to fill the cup with oil the pin 25 is depressed to withdraw the plug 23 from. the filling hole 17 and the closure 18 is rotated in either direction against the action of the springs 29, 30, to bring the one of the re-entrant portions 26 or 27 intoalignment with the filling hole. The spout of an oil can is then inserted into the filling hole and after the cup is filled the oil 'can is Withdrawn and the closure then springs back under the influenceof the springs tothe closed position'shown in Fig.` 3, the plug 23 engaging hole 17 and acting as a lstop to check the return movement of the closure and to hold it securelyin the position shown'in Fig. 3.
To set the needle valve to the desired feeding position, the knurled sleeve is raisedl against the action of spring 40 and rotated to cause the recess 36 of arm 35 to engage one ofthe pins 33, thus causing the valve lltto be raised off its seat `13 to a distance equal to 'theheight of the respective pin. ItI ywill be noted that if itis desired to close the needle Vvvalve that it is not necessaryto rotate the sleeve '34 and arm 35 back to a certain fixed or starting position as is common with devices of this character, but that the needle valve wil-lbe closed for any position of the arm 35'between any of the pins 33. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-I ters Patent of the United States, is:
1. An loil cup having affixed .cover pro- 1 vided with a filling h'ole,la closure rotatably mounted on said cover, said yclosure having a plug pivotally mounted thereon adapted to engage within said filling hole, spr-ing` means to normally urge said plug towards said filling hole, and means to normally hold said closure ina position yto cause said plug to engagesaid filling hole, said closure hav# ing va reentrant 'profile adapted to expose said filling hole when said cover is rotated against the action of said last named means.
2.` An oil cup having a fixed flat .cover provided with an unobstructed filling hole,"
a level closure rotatably mounted on said cover and having a depending flange to provide a space between said closure and said cover, an arm pivotally mounted upon said closure within said space, said arm terminat ing in a plug adapted to engage within and Y seal said filling hole, resilient means contacting with said arm and cover'to normally v urge said plug towards said filling hole, a
pin on said arm projecting through said clo'l sure, and a pair-of vdivergent. springs normally holding said closure in a position in which the `plug is engaged with said hole, said closure having `acontour exposing said filling hole when said cover is rotated' against the action of said springs.
