Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
GEORGE W.'ST00KWELL,' OF NATOHEZ, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROOM-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,342, dated October 1'7, 1876; application filed May 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. STOCK- V WELL, of Natchez, in the county of Adams attach handles of different lengths, for sweeping walls or ceilings as well as floors.
In the drawings, A represents a broom of ordinary form. The form of broom, however, is no part of my invention, as the adjustable handle can as well be attached to the heads of brushes or mops. B is the short stub of the handle, having a tenon cut on the end, which is inserted in a corresponding mortise in the end of the section 0, which has another mortise in the other end, at right angles to the lower on e, to receive the handle D. The joints are made by a pin, E, having a thumb-nut,
E, setting down against a washer. The head of the pin should be countersunk. When the sections are set in line or adjusted to any required angle, they may be fixed by turning the thumb-nut; By taking out the pin next the head a longer or shorter handle similarly constructed may be attached. The shoulders are rounded to permit the free action of the joint. The joints of the parts may be varied in construction, and the sections may be altered in number and arrangement, and the form of the broom altered, without afiecting the principle of my invention.
' What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the broom or brush A, the handle composed of sections B, O, and D, connected by tenons and mortises, and pivoted to set the broom at any required angle, and setscrew for fixing the detachable sections, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE STOOKWELL.
