FLOOR BRUSH Filed June 14, 1954 INVENTOR WALTER LEGGE.
ATTORNEYS.
Uiiiifi This invention relates to floor brushes.
An object of the invention is to provide a floor brush having a plurality of longitudinally extending brush strips and an improved supporting frame therefor to which an elongated handle is connected for universal manipulation of the frame with reference to the handle.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for securing the brush strips to the supporting frame which permits of the release and replacement of the brush strips when the same become worn.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a floor brush in which the handle is connected with the supporting frame for universal movement and which is adjustable to limit the swinging movement of the handle in one direction only.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a floor brush which is of rugged and durable construction, can be manufactured at small cost, and which is practical for its intended purpose.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a floor brush constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the under side thereof.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 with the upper port-ion of the handle broken away.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken approximately on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the floor brush includes a base 10 to which brush strips 11 and 12 are affixed in such a manner that the same may be removed and replaced when damaged or worn. The brush is of the type adapted to be moved over the floor or surface to be cleaned by a handle 13 which is connected with the base 10 so as to permit of universal movement of the handle with reference to the base. The base is disposed in a plane parallel with the floor or surface to be cleaned for movement thereof in endwise, sidewise, and angular relations and with the bristles 14 of the brush strip disposed in fiat contact with the floor or surface to be cleaned.
The base 19 consists of an elongated plate having a downturned peripheral rim 15. The brush strips extend longitudinally of said plate adjacent the opposite longitudinal rim portions and include metal runners 17 which are of U-shaped formation in cross-section providing longitudinally extending recesses in which the upper ends of the bristles are clamped and tightly secured by the clamping action of the opposite sides thereof. The brush strips are affixed to a plurality of straps 19, three being shown in the present embodiment which extend transversely of and below the base plate and are secured thereto by screws 20 extending through tubular spacers 21 located between the plate and the straps. The straps 19 are provided with U-shaped ends 22 having the opposite sides thereof converging downwardly to restrict the opening therebetween so as to fit about the top and opposite sides of the runners 17 and to tightly clamp the lower edges of the runners between the opposite sides thereof.
States Patent The handle 13 is connected with the base plate 10 by means of a universal connection 24. The said connection includes upper and lower members 25 and 26 having bifurcated ends 27 and 28 respectively. Arranged within the bifurcated ends is a member 30 which is pivoted to the bifurcated end 27 on a pivot pin 31 and pivoted to the bifurcated end 28 on a pivot pin 32. The upper member 25 extends into the hollow lower end of the handle 13 and is affixed thereto by rivets 34, while the lower member 26 thereof extends through an opening 35 in the base plate and is secured to the central strap 19 by means of a screw 36. This construction provides means by which the handle 13 may be swung on the pivot pins 31 and 32 to dispose the handle in various angular relations with reference to the base 10. I
In order to limit the swinging movement of the handle 13 with reference to the base 10, the member 30 together with the bifurcated end of the member 26 of the universal connection 24 are provided with aligned openings in which a pin 37 is inserted to prevent rocking movement of the member 30 with reference to the member 26. The handle 13, however, has pivotal swinging movement on the pivot pin 31 in a plane at right angles to the length of the base 10. The pin 37 may be inserted and removed as desired and may be inserted in position therein when the floor brush is to be used for forward and rearward movement only over the surface to be cleaned.
The base 10 is provided with rubber bumpers in the form of strips 39 which overlie the outer face of the peripheral flange 15 at the corners and are secured thereto by rivets 40 or equivalent fastening means.
While the preferred form of the invention is illustrated and described herein, it is to be understood that the same is not so limited but shall cover and include any and all modifications thereof which fall within the scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a floor brush, a base including a flat plate, a plurality of longitudinally spaced transversely extending straps located beneath and extending from one side of said plate to the other, said straps having inverted U- shaped bends at the ends thereof converging downwardly to restrict the openings therebetween, said straps between said bends being straight, means securing said straps to said plate with said U-shaped bends against the underside of said plate and the portions of said straps between said bends spaced a substantial distance below said plate, said means comprising tubular spacers adjacent the ends of said straight portions between and abutting said plate and straight portions and fastening elements passing through said tubular spacers and interconnecting said plate and straight portions, and brush strips extending longitudinally of said plate adjacent the opposite longitudinal edges thereof and being clampedly secured in said U-shaped bends.
2. The invention of claim 1, and a handle having a pivotal joint disposed closely adjacent said plate, said handle below said joint extending through said plate to one of said straps, and a headed screw extending through said one strap and up into said handle below said joint for securing said handle to said one strap.
