The eye lass is held in open position by a weighted trigger, and when the operator wishes to have the eyeglass closed by gravity, all thisis necessary is to swing the head laterally and this will cause the weighted trlgger to release the mechanism that holds the glass in open osition.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectionalong the line 11 of igure 2 is a front elevation of the device, Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the device, and

n-carrying out my invention I provide a' welders hood 1 of standard construction,
. this hood being supported by a head band 2. The front face 3 of the hood carries a frame 4 in which an eye shield mechanism is mounted.
This eye shield mechanism comprises a cover frame 5 hinged to the frame 4 at 6.
' An eye-protecting glass 7 (see Figure 4) covers an opening 8 in theframe 5 and is held in place by spring clips 9. A second glass 10 is disposed on the outside of the frame 5 and protects the glass 7. The glass 10 is held in place by spring clips 11 and supports 12.
The cover drops into closed position by gravity when the hood is held in the position shown in Fi is used for preventing the frame 5 from swinging into open position until manually released. This catch is shown in Figure 4 and is rotatably mounted on a pin 14 carried by a flange 15 of the 'frame4. The hookshap'ed end 16 of the catch receives a pin 17 carried by the frame 5. A vweighted portion 18a of the catch tends to hold it in the position shown in Figure 4 by gravity, and when the cover '5 swings into closed position, the pin 17 will momentarily ,swin the catch- 13 in a counter-clockwise direction until the hook 16 rides over the pin, whereupon the weighted end 18a will cause the hook to en- 'z oal s. xonron, or am mancrsco, .csnmonma, ASSIGNOB or Orin-sum 'ro wmnul r. nonnmeswonrn, or am rnancrsco, oamonma gure 1. An automatic catch 13 I hood is swung into substantially horizontal position, as is the case when the device is in use, the catch 13 will prevent the accidental opening of the cover 5.
I provide means for manually opening the cover 5, and this means first releases the catch 13. so as to free the cover. In Figure 3.1 show a frame 18 having sides 19 and 20, the side 19 having aslot 21 therein (see Figure 4) for receiving one end of a rod 22, while the side has an o ning for receiving the other end of the ro 22. A spring 23 1s secured to the top of the side 19 and holds the frame 18 in a slightly inclined position as shown in Figure 3.
A chin-actuated member comprising a rack bar 24 vsecured to the frame 18 and an adjustable chin rest 25 is used for'actuating' the frame 18. The frame has an opening 26 the upper edge 27 of which engages with an extended portion 28 of the catch 13. When the operator wishes to open the cover 5, he

ing the cover in open position. Reference to Figure 3 shows a pin 30 as being carried by the frame 18, and this pin is engaged by weighted trigger 31 when the cover 5 1s m 5 open position. The trigger 31 holds the cover 5 in this position. When the operator wishes to release the cover, he merely moves his head laterally and the weighted end 32 of the trigger 31 will swing the trigger free of the pin 30 and permit the cover to close by gravity. The cover is again held in closed position by the catch 13 in the manner already described.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the 15 operator has complete control of the opening and the closing of the cover 5 and the device automatically locks the cover. in either open or closed position.
Although I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of various changes, and I reserve the right to employ such changes as may come within the scope of the claims hereto attached. a I claim:
1. A welders hood comprising an e e glass carrying frame hinged to the hood an swingi able into closed position by gravity, a catch for locking the frame in closed sition, and
manually controlled means for t releasing the catch and then for swinging the frame into open position.
2. A welders hood comprisin an e e glass carrying frame, means actuate by t e chin of the operator for opening the frame, means for holding the frame in open position, said holding meansfreeing the frame when the operator abruptly moves the hood in a transverse direction, and means for locking the ;frame in closed position, said locking means being released when the frame opening means is actuated.
3. In a welders hood, an eye glass frame hinged to the hood, a gravity actuated catch for locking the frame in closed position, a chin actuated member connected to said catch for opening the catch, said member having a lost motion connection with the frame for moving it, this motion being employed for 59 first freein the catch and then swinging the eye glass ame.
4. The combination with a welders hood having an eye opening therein, of a glare shield normally covering the opening, a
weighted trigger for holdin the shield in raised position, a pin carrie by the shield and swinging the trigger into released osition during the opening movement 0 the shield, said trigger when freed swin 'ng into 60 a position to engage with the pin an support the shield in raised position, said trigger freeing the pin when the hood is moved abruptly in a lateral direction.
